Pachter: PS3 battered 360 in the US last month

"We estimate sell-through of 750,000 Wii, 235,000 Xbox 360 and 375,000 PS3 consoles."

Well if he's right which doesn't happen often. I would have to say MGS4 had a lot to do with this. I believe that PS3 did outsell the 360 by a good bit. MGS4 alone I'm sure pushed 100,000 consoles.

The 80gb bundle proved to be very popular with a lot of retailers selling out of their 2nd shipment already. The $100 gift card at Walmart also didn't hurt sales. Still very good numbers for the middle of the year though. Hopefully they can keep some of the momentum until some of the other big titles hit in the Fall.

Before you get to defensive reread my statement. I wasn't talking about the PS3 outselling the 360. I was talking about Patchers analysis of what the numbers were going to be. April he predicted the PS3 would beat the 360 he was wrong. May he predicted 360 would beat the PS3 and he was wrong. Now don't get me wrong I believe the PS3 definitely beat the 360 last month. Just Patcher isn't the most reliable person when it comes to his predictions.

Yeah, Pacther isn't the most reliable, but it is just that an educated guess.

However, I think the July numbers for PS3 will be rather poor. June was expected to be high, due to MGS4 and the Walmart deal that I suspect Sony was trying to artificially push their number higher. I know a number of people that bought the PS3, just because it was a good deal. The numbers stabilize afterwards, and I suspect that MGS4 is just a blip when it comes to long term moving consoles. The only games I can remember moving consoles of recent time is Halo 3 and maybe Smash Bros Brawl, but the Wii was doing so well anyhow. GTA 4 did just about nothing.

MS is doing the same with their temporary price cut, as it will spike sales, but they remain their original price in August. Ingenious move by Sony last year, at the most inopportune time (the price was too high for them). This is now being repeated by MS, with the 360 potentially being to expensive at $350.... Adding 40GB does nothing for most gamers and will not compell them to buy it now if they haven't bought it before. I can fill up my 20GB hard drive pretty quick, but nothing I can't delete.

but I guess i'm not an analyst....anyhoo I finally got a Wii and after beating Super Paper Mario and getting tired of the Wii Sports I haven't played it all weekend. I think I had more fun make Mii's of my family and friends. Also Smarty Pants is a pretty good family game. I rather pay more and be hardcore then to play another Wii game but thats just me.

Agreed completely. I've had a Wii for about 4 months, and I rarely play it. After playing thru Mario Kart, Smash Brothers, Mario Galaxy, and Zelda I haven't played it much. Now when family and friends come around we break it out, but when I'm alone I'm usually playing my PS3. I think the Wii is a lot of fun, but in all honesty really loses it's appeal after awhile.

They are good numbers, don't get me wrong, but they could have (with the proper marketing) and should have done better.

THis is the game that the overwhelming majority of people who were on the fence about getting a PS3 would finally pick the sytem up for.

I will say I think if these are close to accurate these are good numbers. Now most reasonable people would tell you that MGS4 was not going to sell Halo like numbers or even push the amount of consoles it did. It is a wonderful game probably one of the best I ever played but, it definitely appeals to a smaller audience then the mainstream FPS games.

Now I still believe these are good numbers considering the PS3 has had a hard time pushing 200,000 units in the US the last couple of months. And the way the economy is going being able to sell almost 400,000 PS3 at $400 a piece is pretty damn good.

Wow, from memory, Halo 3 never sold more than 40K-50K (about 30K on first week, then peanuts on following weeks) EXTRA consoles. That was during the best gaming month too. (Fall, when kids have plenty of summer job money to spend). My memory is pretty bad, but I remember this was considered a flop, and that's when we saw all those articles saying that software no longer push hardware like before.

To me, MGS4 is really the first hardware pushing game of this generation. Halo 3 hardware sales peak was barely visible on most tracking graph....

The wow factor should be if these sales actually stick around for the rest of the summer & not just because of MGS4 & they wont until the next big game. But when team A has their best lineup out on the court (Halo 3, Gears of War, Mass Effect, Bioshock, wayyy better mplat versions of games better price, been out longer) and team B has only been playing one starter for about 30 seconds (MGS4), you kind of get an idea of where the game might be going. ;)

MS has done SO much right. They've had a great Gears launch, Halo 3 launch, Gears, Mass Effect, Bioshock, are cheaper, have more developer support up until now, better marketing... And Sony has had such a slow start, and yet look at the last 6 months....

My guess is Sony overtakes the 360 worldwide some time in 2009. Easily.

375,000 sales with Metal Gear Solid 4 out. That is a major fuċking disaster for the PS3's biggest game of 2008. It didn't even have any competition.

Sony needed far more sales prior to E3 for the inevitable spin. Konami needs the userbase to increase if they ever hope to have MGS4 pass the 3 million mark and make a decent profit.

they're probably wrong too. First of all Walmart doesn't divulge sales numbers so any figure including NPD is an estimate. I would think it would be 400k - 500k for the PS3 ... at least for it to be considered a "battering". But then again at $499 a pop, with the US economy and dollar in freefall, 375k may be all Sony gets.

duhh... look at the xbox 360 numbers... they are constant compared to previous months.. that's about average or better than previous months... the PS3 sells increased; xbox 360 sells stayed constant... why? because of Metal Gear... Now people may only focus on the fact that the PS3 sold more than the xbox 360... (go on celebrate).. but is 375,000 is the best the PS3 can sell with the biggest PS3 game since launch? what were xbox 360 sells when Halo or Gears came out? only 100,000 better than the PS3? no way.

The xbox 360 sold 457,000(month halo came out) on sept 2008 and 557,019 in oct PS3 (123,000) software xbox 360 sells? 4,007,164 in oct.

That's how the PS3 numbers should look like or better... Metal Gears is the PS3 Halo or probably even bigger... the PS3 should at least be selling 400,000 more unites than the xbox 360.. just like the xbox 360 did when Halo came out. Now that Metal Gears is a done deal and sells are starting to drop... what will Sony do against let's say Gears 2? No other PS3 game is bigger than Metal Gear.

There is no such thing as a "System Seller." Big games on their own can temporarily boost sales, but it's never long lasting. The effects are gradual and depend on the total software library as a whole.

I just think we punters dont know what a system seller really is. MGS4 is a system seller. Gears was a system seller, GT4 was one too. They will move more units than other games it seems the problem people may have is how many system actually get sold because of a particular game.

The desirable model is the 80G model at $499. Granted you get a lot for the $499 -- a bundled game, bluray, 80 - 90% BC (vastly improved with fw 2.41), wifi, etc...

Its just not a mass market price... which is why the wii hits 750k/mo regularly in the US. The PS3 needs to hit $299 with PS2 b/c restored and some decent RPGs.

If this is true then the 360 does need to look out. I know MGS4 came out and WM had a special deal but they still sold 140k more right? Doesn't matter how they do, matters what the #s are at the end of the month. The Wii is a beast but all systems are doing pretty well. I guess the 360 really needed that $50 price cut...even if it is a fire sale. The battle will be good in the next comming months but so far this year it looks like the Wii has everyone beat and the PS3 has the 360 beat. So far anyways.
