Rumor: "Avatars" are Xbox's Mii's

X3F: Well, well, well, what have we here? Looks like we're finally getting some real evidence that Microsoft really does have some sort of response to Nintendo's Miis on the way. It's been rumored for some time now and the above shot of the linked flash page seems portend the end of the rumors. Given more credibility by the fact that the link mentions an NDA (that we, and the person who sent us the link, never saw or signed) these "Xbox Avatars" certainly look to do everything that Mii's do and more.

Any video game that allows you to customize your character is considered an avatar. So you're saying it's pointless to have customizations for avatars to give every individual a unique identity. Technically speaking every online / off-line game you'll have an avatar. So if you're saying avatars in general are stupid you have no argument.

just look at the avatars on here, they rarely represent the people, just in some cases the persons favourite games or just trying to be the coolest picture.

Live has brought xbox popularity because nobody else has it. I guess it's too hard for their design teams to come up with anything creative that's also original. For instance, if I was really into casual gaming, why would I be convinced that a 360 is the way to go? It will end up with less than 30 casual games in 5 years....no 3rd party is going to jump on this like MS would like. With Nintendo, every game is casual, even the "hardcore" ones. That makes hundreds of games compared to 30. So, if you're into casual games, MS having Mii's isn't going to change any body's mind. It's just going to annoy the people the console is currently geared towards.

This is why Sony was so far behind at the start of this generation, they hadn't innovated.. only evolved with a larger hard drive/media and a tack-on online system and motion control.

Nintendo has their wii, it's shot ahead. The 360 has the gamerscore/presence system etc which really added another level.

Now the generation is mature you cannot diss companies for imitating what's successful on others. echoing the motion control in both the ps3 and 360 as well as avatars is only business sense.

aaron greenberg is already on record saying that they are working on re-doing the market place. Shane Kim stated they have some surprises up their sleeves for this year at E3. How is putting new tech standards into a box innovating?
HDMI is a connection standard that's been about for years, that's not innovating [especially without a bundled cable]. Blue ray wasn't innovating, it's just a bigger disk [that runs slower at 2x than dvd does at 12x]. the Cell? IBM made that one and it's done nothing but make game development harder for everyone and almost impossible for some. It wasn't designed for games, it's designed for seriously major hardass mainframe number crunching.

That's not innovation, as it's not led to anything new.

Eyetoy? how old is that concept? It wasn't a new innovation for this generation, again they just evolved the concept. Eye of judgement is funky looking, but it's no system-selling innovation.

Bottom line is that there are few new ideas. Even the Wii stuff isn't new, just a new way of packaging it. It's all about how to put a new spin on an old idea. And more importantly, how to make a service that people want to use.

XBL is a service, PSN is a service, that's where the monnehs are truly going to be made with content delivery.

I'm in general talking about innovation, success or not, having a Yu-Gi-Oh type of mechanic is pretty cool

Also I wanted to mention that if you know Sony and the PSone and PS2 they are always slow from the start, everyone knows that, innovation or not

Innovation doesn't have to come from hardware, but creating new IP's like Little Big Planet, I'm not tech savvy but there is some differing constant that has almost all the exclusive Sony made software a different experience of something that I have never seen before on any console, it hasn't been done therefore to me as a gaming consumer that is innovation, the definition is different for some people but that is what it is to me

On the Blu-ray disk front, you are right it is 2X, but translate that to DVD speed that is about 9X at a constant, DVD is 12X at the max but slows down in other places of the DVD, again I'm not tech savvy but I read that somewhere

So to sum up innovation for me is software for the most part, and some things that Sony made like Eye of Judgement is pretty innovative

This is kinda pointless I honestly don't see the point of this. This type of thing really doesn't appeal to the xbox crowd so most of them aren't gonna care and this isn't gonna be something that will expand the brand and get people to buy an xbox. Also the fact that this is being implemented into Xbox live this late into the consoles life span means it most likely wont work as good as it should.
