Pachter: Microsoft is "foolish" for worrying about being #1

Next-Gen.biz via OXM Podcast writes: "Microsoft is "foolish" for worrying about being number one in the console war, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter said in a recent podcast.

"I personally think that, with a lot of respect for the Microsoft guys...I don't mean to diss them at all...I think they're foolish to even worry about who's first and who's second. I think that's just stupid," Pachter said during Future's OXM podcast.

"You can be second or third and still make a buttload of money," he continued. 'I don't ever hear Activision or Ubisoft saying that they just hate being second or third and that they envy EA so much that they can't stand it. They both make a lot of money, and are very happy to thrive.'"

Even though I don't agree with his comments 99.99999% of the time.
I have to agree here.
Microsoft should just focus on getting quality products out, creating a positive name and respect for their brand.

The mudslinging is unnecessary this early in the race.
Not saying you can't take a jab or two every now and then, it is business of course, but the dumb PR statements against the competition and the 'big head' attitude after the last NPD reports were very unprofessional.
Especially for a company that's still, in my eyes, a baby in the industry.

The only thing MS can brag about right now is their Live service.

Their hardware still gets red lighted(pun intended)
Their software lineup should have been consistent following 2007.
Their brand still suffers, not only for their console, but also with Vista's performance, or lack thereof.

I agree. Sony is no saint by any means, but the recent NPD results paint the picture. MS is about to lose, damage control moments before the NPD numbers come out. Sony loses by 5,000, they dont' make one mention of hte fact they pulled 80GB from the shelves. They just say, hey, look our numbers increased from last year.

Of course being number one is irrelevant, in and of itself, but the reality is that the number one console tends to lead in development of third party games. And why should anyone aim for the number two spot?

I do agree with his point about wanting to be profitable but beyond that Pachter doesn't seem to know what he is talking about. The reality is that MS is in gaming because PC gaming is fading, sales of OS systems are not going to be as strong in the future (most people buy a OS with a new computer and you don't need to buy one of those very often if you don't game on it), and MS wants to be on every console in the living room. So, IMO, gaming is really just a trogan horse for MS, kinda like hte PS3 was a trojan horse for winning the HD format war for Sony. The only problem for MS is that it is a long term fight but MS can afford it for a while and since MS is making money things are all good for now.

Personally I think MS should drop the price on its console as agressively as possible - those consoles sold start to make you more and more money as people buy more and more games. First one to 10 million is nice but if you make it to 30 million you are doing much better. And 40 million is really a nice place to be.

They should go for it even if there is loss Xbox 1 secured some profit but it never had a fanbase and if they don't have fan base "a miss a mile would be worth a thousand" and then in the next gen they will go more back and back and back and then never come again.

They are doing it right if they stuggle then only they will be at a place near all console, they did it form the beginning so they are here now if they didnt they would have ended even worse than Xbox 1 this time. The prediction was that at end of this gen they would reach 50 million but I think they will be near to 90 million if they keep on going and then they could butter out profit.

Microsoft's foolishness extends beyond them worrying about being number 1. The Xbox division has never been number 1 in console sales nor will it never be number 1. If you want a quality product in the market, history shows in the last 20 years that top product will belong to either Nintendo or Sony. Microsoft is too incompetent to even think of achieving this dream.

Some things in gaming never change, Microsoft's inability to win market share on a worldwide basis is one of them.

Microsoft have been in a very good position in this generation; they have the titles, 3rd party support and Live. I believe they should try to acquire more exclusive titles, expand their portfolio of 1st party developers, Fix the RODD issues (they are getting out of hand) and expand towards a bigger audience.

I don't get the impression that PS3 is trying to be number one or purely focused on beating 360 although I do feel that they are pushing for longevity and added benefits of this console. I do feel they are behind 360 in terms of LIVE etc and are pushing to catch up.

I don't get the impression that 360 is focused on the areas where they can improve their hardware issues or the longevity of any one 360 design but I do get the impression that they are very focused on 360 beating the PS3 by delivering more quantity (units sold).

I can see a company caring about if they're first or not, because they'll make more of a profit, but us consumers shouldn't care who wins. In reality both are going to do fine. If Microsft manages to keep the 360 out for a while and can even sale 50 million... they completely DOUBLED FLOPbox 1's sales. That would be huge for them. If Sony sales 90-100 million PS3's in the next 8-9 years(which it will easily break 100 million) would that make it not a success?? lol The only console to even ever reach 90 million are PSX and PS2. PS3 will also.

If they 360 only sales 40 million or 45 million... they still sold more tahn last time. It just really is kinda a flop. I am not particularly a Sony Fanboy, even though PS3 is my favorite console this gen and PS2 was my favorite last gen, but the main factor in why Xbox 360 is "#1" is because they launched a year ahead of the current competition.

Use any kind of half-assed logic you want, but if the 360 launched simultaneously with the PS3, the 360 would not be ahead like it is now. It would not even have superior software because developers obviously have had more time in constructing software for the 360 then they have for the PS3 (though that trend is already turning towards the PS3's favor).

Lets start at the very beginning; when Microsoft first entered the Console gaming market with the original Xbox. If it wasn't for Sony creating the Playstation brand and totally expanding the console gaming industry to the size it is now, Microsoft would have never even entered the console market to begin with because they would have never seen any financial incentive in it.

Sony and the Playstation brand has brought videogaming to the mainstream, casual audiences and has expanded the industry as a whole at the same time. You may look upon that in a negative light, but that has allowed other companies, mainly Microsoft, the chance to enter the ring and try to win the fight by introducing their console and their distinctive software line-ups.

The trend behind the Ps3 adoption is going up. I don't know where the hell you get the information to think otherwise.

Both systems are selling, software for both is selling, people are making money, and no matter which system you choose, the fact that the other system is out there causes the competition that makes all the graphical enhancements, and quality games come out in the first place. The way I see it, MS will close some of the BIG gap to the Sony brand this gen. The wii, will share it's User-Base with some Hardcore gamers with a PS3 or 360. since they have been profitable a while now,Nintendo is in Control.

Sony I do not think, will break PS2 records because many that bought PS2 have jumped unto xbox 360, while some have both but eventually they will lead in sales, unless Devs continue to favor the 360 for it's Support and ease of production then we will see more game son the 360 and, gamers will flock to where the games are. He does make a good point about msoft and he should as well say Sony, but more MSoft i guess, as they like to blow their horn, or come up with shortages excuses the last 2 months (SOny got rid their 80 gig model till basically MGS 4 lanuches, which by all accounts is their more popular model to begin with, and they haven't made shortage excuse...). But yeah both should just focus on being profitable, rather than who comes in first, besides Wii is kicking both their asses anyway.

The wii is in a league of it's own sales wise, the premier.

PS3/360 are still in what the us would call the minors atm.

But as you can see the ps2 has dropped 11%. Does that mean that 11% have bought ps3's, or that ppl are just starting the realize the ps2 is old school. and are starting to shy away from it now.

The Xbox brand of gaming is definitely not my cup of tea, though they do have some good games. However, it's clear to anyone with an ounce of sense that it's not so much about "Winning" the "War" as it is gaining market share in the gaming industry (Which they've done considerably) so that they can (Drumroll please) Sell more software! (in this specific area, gaming).

MS playing into the console war hype (Caring about 1st place) with their statements is for little other reason than to excite and spur on customers who have chosen sides to buy more games and get their friends to do the same. Same for Sony. It's smart business. Why doesn't Nintendo do this? Their crowd isn't excited by that type of talk. Simple as that. It's all about building and steering the demographic. Pachter is a dumbass. If a professional finds their niche in talking bad about someone or something, the least they can do is sound intelligent when they do. What a clown.

It seems like a lot of posters here, have automatically put 360 (MS) in 1st place this gen, when Wii has recently outsold the 360. I think Wii is in 1st place and 360 in 2nd. And if we take into account the fact of 360's head start, it would be suffice to say that PS3 is on an even selling scale (possible higher) than 360 for same time frame from release for each respective console...And Wii is absolutely hammering both of them to the point of embarassment.....With a last gen system and a new controller interface to boot.

Patcher is right, MS are in 2nd place, and they will slip to 3rd withing 2 years..No use stressing over 2nd possibly 3rd place. They need to stop worrying about Sony, and hating on them, and show them some respect....... All we have to do is look at the 2008 lineup of games to see who is doing the smarter things to expand install base...And it ain't the company that only seems to want to attract the exact same Halo fan base it had last gen. Smarten up MS...Get your a$$es some good, unique 1st party developers and more importantly, allow them some creative freedom instead of strangling them for another update of a well worn series.. No wonder Bizarre and Bungie were getting bored.

Sony were so successful in this biz, due to very smart 1st party assembling, 2nd and 3rd party loyalty, due to the way they treated them. Sure, they lost some 3rd party exlusives...But so does every company...MS lost Ninja Theory, Bungie (they will multiplat SOON), Bizarre and I'm sure I'm forgetting some, they killed Oddworld Inhabants. Nintendo lost Silicon Knights, Rare, Factor 5, and nearly every other major and minor 3rd party after the snes.... And Sony have lost plenty over 3 gens of machines, and will lose more, like the rest. Time to catch up in these areas MS, then the install base will follow.
