Scandinavian (Game) Design, Part 2 - Battlefield games, Mirror's Edge. Hitman, Riddick, and more

GameTap continues in Part 2: "Electronic Arts DICE

Past: Motorhead, Pinball Fantasies, Rallisport Challenge, Battlefield

Future: Battlefield: Bad Company, Mirror's Edge, Battlefield Heroes, unnamed FPS

Digital Illusions is one of the oldest Nordic development teams; it is housed in one of the fanciest, state-of-the-art buildings in downtown Stockholm overlooking the ocean. That's a far cry from the cellar where the team got their start on the Amiga back in the early 1990s.

A little-known fact is that the Battlefield franchise, which is what DICE is most famous for, was originally the work of Swedish developer Refractions (which developed Codename Eagle for PC). DICE and Refractions joined forces, and the prototype Refractions was working on turned into Battlefield. Battlefield's popularity has been on the wane and the franchise has not yet made any real impact on consoles. DICE and EA are hoping to change that with the upcoming Battlefield: Bad Company. Early reactions to the game have been positive, and the trailers look impressive. The game is scheduled for a June release."
