Ahead of February US NPD sales figures, Microsoft has told Next-Gen that it expects the PlayStation 3 to have outsold Xbox 360 last month, but calls the win a "hollow victory."

Microsoft thinks that slapping their name on an item will cause consumers to swoon over their merchandise when this isn't happening at all.

They're not understanding that respect is given where it's due.

Software quality is still on 360's side. 95% of all multiplatform games run best on the 360. The other 5% are games like Burnout Revenge, that are made on the PS3 and ported to 360, but still look equal. While 360 to PS3 ports suck.

The most on and over 90% exclusive games are on the 360. PS3 has only one game on 90%, Uncharted.

The 360 was fine on the market when there was no next gen competition but that didn't stop the ps2 to outsell it every month the whole first year in North America with the exception of two. But Sony is hard hitting Spring with mega exclusives like MLB 08: The Show and Hot Shots Golf 5, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Haze, Metal Gear Solid 4, etc. plus every other big multiplatform title. Plus the Dualshock 3 and online is free :)...and then all the games are on Blu-ray with High definition movies as icing.

Either way ... you're correct in saying this constant PR/Damage control BS is only making them look bad. Some threads down there's an article where MS is claiming superiority in games and functionalities. They did something similar a week or so ago. It's becoming pretty consistent. It's like they know the PS3 is gaining steam. They know the PS3 is gaining many of the strong points that MS once held exclusively last year (achievemnet, LIVE, Rumble, Tons of Games). They know BD won as they try to downplay that as much as possible too. It just looks like they're scrambling for some reason right now.

Damage control isn't for the consumer. It's for the stock holders. While we might be skeptical of what they say, if I were a stockholder I would rather hear it from them now than later.

Also, on supply constraints. Major retailers probably aren't supply constrained yet, but smaller retailers are probably where the constraints are going to come off last, and probably a lot more in big cities where a lot of people buy things. Then you have to remember that M$ only sees the supply going out to retailers, not the supply at retailers.

It's very possible that retailers are putting in large orders that M$ can't fill; even though they still have the console in stock. As a consumer you wouldn't be affected a lot, but it would affect a stockholder a lot more.

I'm not saying I necessarily believe all of that (I think it would have a small effect), I'm just trying to show there might be some truth behind what they say. Sure it could be exagerated, but what company doesn't do that?

edit: forgot to add. It's also likely that M$ shifted a large supply of 360's to Europe in anticipation of the price drop.

Some parts of your comment I do agree with actually. Yes, us Sony fans do overhype a lot of games, but nothing can be overhyped as much as Halo 3. Of course, Halo 3 was not only a proven franchise but it is the biggest game on 360 so I can't argue much there. I'm not hyping those games in my comment, just saying all of those(except KZ2) are proven franchises and are bound to sell consoles and millions of copies of that game.

I personally enjoyed Lair, despite review scores, it's not a review that makes a game its the gamers opinion that makes the game. I loved Heavenly Sword also. I also agree that these games are definitely needed to keep the PS3 going, if they flop it can only spell disaster for the PS3. All we have in 2009 to redeem us is FFXIII and God of War. Those games I am very confident that they will be amazing, and "AAA."

I know I listed multiple exclusives for PS3 and one for 360, well Gears 2 is just that big of a game! Look at what it did for the 360 when it released, it is the game that made people truly buy the 360. I know there are others but judging by what I've seen so far those titles(Alan Wake, Too Human?) don't seem as big as Gears 2 or Halo 3. Ninja Gaiden II is a game I did forget to mention, you got me there.

downplaying the fact that PS3 is back in NA. From the beginning of this year MS have been trying hard to show that the PS3 resurgence in NA is only temporary. The fact that they have invested heavily into GTA and their claim that they would have ample supply by April shows that they are banking on GTA exclusive content to push the x360 past PS3 sales to downplay the PS3 resurgence in NA as nothing but a lucky break.

Its a matter of perception which is very important. MS dosen't want people to perceive the x360 as going downhill which sales figure seem to suggest. It will be interesting to see what happens when GTA4 is released. I am pretty sure the x360 will outsell the PS3 in NA i April but not worldwide.

I think Sony is already picking up, I don't believe in game XMB will have a difference other than being an extra feature that the 360 can't name off as being an advantage.

So what he is saying is that in Feb, people went out and purchased a PS3 when they couldn't find a 360. So he is saying that the 360 is that substitutable that customers just wouldn't wait until they could find the 360 in stock?

That, in my opinion is not a positive for MS as if they really had a must have product people wouldn't go out and buy another one in its place. This logic on his part indeed brings into question if there was really a shortage at all or if people are beginning to realize that the PS3 is a better value.

I know, he works for MS and it's his job to spin negatives into positives, but the logic he is using on this is very thin and should be apparent to anyone with any sense who reads it.
