Correct: The PS3 is in third in NA sales. PS3 is outsold by the 360 by a good margin in the US and Canada.

And in all honestly, it's going to be a long time before that ever changes, purely because of install bases. I can't think of any other logical reason than that because I really don't buy masses of people buying the PS3 solely as a blu-ray player.

I think one thing that helped 360 titles sell so well was the spacing of the releases. It seemed that in the last 4 months, one great game was released about every month, and that's affordable for most gamers.

On the other hand, I had to buy about 9 games from October to December. That might be affordable for me but a lot of gamers just can't afford releases that close together.

What's REALLY shocking is the PS2 having 3 in the top 10. That's just insane.

No joke. after the recent news about hd-dvd's death, i bought a PS3. $399 for a stand alone or $399 for PS3. personally i hate the ps3 controller, but i'm a S controller homer. just feels better. i have the 360 for gaming and if something ever happens where blu-ray fails, at least i have a console to sell rather than a stand alone worthless piece of equipment. love the ps3 for movies and incorporating my AVCHD from my HG10, but still love the 360 for gaming.

What you are saying sounds like a cop out excuse. It is pretty obvious based on the last year alone and all over the world the software has been low as far as (Blu-Ray games) go. As many consoles they have been selling it should have better numbers than this by now. Not 1 game on the PS3 has ever made it as #1 for any month. The answer to why is the devided user base.

I want to see what happens when MGS4 releases because if it doesn't sale as a must have on the console then somthing is seriously wrong then. Giving an excuse about user base will go out the window for sure if that game doesn't sale well.

Around this time DEC 06 Gear of War really helped the 360 sales, if I'm correct. I was hoping UT3 do the same for the PS3 being a "shooter" which is popular here in NA, and another EPIC classic but, I do not think this has been the case. I think COD and AC took the cake and that new SKU strategy.

Either way I don't think there was a Gears of War/Halo 3 type game for Sony in 07. Seems like in 2008 Sony's big games will be fighting for sales amongst themselves. So many delays may hurt Devs, when their games come out amongst Beast. Sep-Dec are the biggest sale months.

I think if the PS3 continues to trail by 100k's in NA and stay rather close with the 360 in Europe, only Japan where the 360 doesn't sell well at all will make a difference for Sony PS3 world wide numbers. Then again that is expected.

What 2008 brings - does Sony start to close the gap or is there no change. In my mind, if Sony doesn't significantly close the gap in 2008 then PS3 will never catch up to the XBOX 360. It will not matter - both systems will be strong - but it has to be a huge disappointment for Sony.

The funny thing is, Sony was so arrogant early on. Now, if they manage to catch up at all it will be a huge moral victory.

THE PS3 must start selling because of Software, while price-cuts help, I think Sony was put in a tough situation with it's high-prices console so it had to slim things down or cut cost rather quickly, which is why we had Extra Sku's for which Sony has never been known for.

What's wait to be seen is what happens when the 360 cuts their prices to match? Ya know like a real price-cut, I wonder if it stand true, the first to $199 will sell like wildfire....The 360 already sells very well with software.

I really think Sony has split the market, and it's user-base numbers are skewed because of who is really buying the console for games. I'm not sure how much it hurts them tho, that's why in 2008 the software must sell the console. If this does not happen, with the big games coming out, then I don't know Sony....

I think that MS wanted to get more 65 nm stuff before they dropped prices (less cost, better reliability, etc.). That is really what it is going to take in Japan - MS needs to provide a XBOX 360 that includes a quiet DVD drive and is safe even if it is placed in a poorly ventilated cabinet (it is not like the Japanese have huge homes with tons of space - space is an issue there).

If MS can produce a quieter bullet proof sku, then sales in Japan will pick up. Probably the same thing in Europe but to a lesser extent.

The question will hinge, as you suggested, on software for the PS3. If its great, then the PS3 will start to sell (MS can potentially mitigate with a big price cut). If the software in 2008 is merely equivalent to what is available on the XBOX 360, then there is little hope for Sony this generation. So the big guns better deliver.

But they also have advertisements dedicated to Playstation Network (the PS3's online network) and to the games available on PS3. I think it's smart of them to focus on all three aspects of the system, as it increases sales and educates consumers of what the machine can really do.

UTIII is a pretty lackluster title, so it's understandable that its sales are puny (ironically, it's selling a lot better on PS3 than PC). Uncharted though is still on major software charts, and is on track to sell a million copies by February. That info's probably surprising to most people since so much FUD was spread about "PS3 titles Not Selling."

I still remember the doomsday articles about "Ratchet only selling 90K copies in October", even though it was released on October 30th. =P

North America is the 360's most popular territory, so it's interesting to see how much progress PS3 sales have made in comparison to Microsoft's console. We already know that the PS3 outsold the 360 in 2007 (hardware units), but if Sony can manage to dominate Microsoft in ALL major territories (rathern than 2 out of 3) then they'll definitely catch up fast.

Wii sales were smaller than I expected though. Oh well, still great sales though.

Edit Ans above: The logical explanation is that the the majority of the 3 million PS3 owners are mostly hardcore players. If you look at games such as COD4 and Assisns Creed. It sells as much as their x360 counterparts percentage wise. RC and uncharted are mainly mainstream titles for those that are not really hardcore and not really casuals. I do agree with some to an extent that Some people are buying the PS3 for it blu-ray capability.

I got one of those ps3s and NDSes. At least my wife did. Pretty much the only reason we got a ps3 was because my wife wanted a new DVD player, so I figured why blow $100 on yesteryear's platform when I can put that towards the new format. Then walmart.com had the 40gb version with a free game and BT remote. I snatched that up.

360 pwns because the PS3 has a diverse userbase. Well, guess what? That diverse userbase means that MORE people will buy the console, not just hardcore gamers. I know A LOT of people that bought a PS2 because they wanted a DVD player for their bedroom, plus it could play some great games.

Last gen was the same. The xbox had great attach rates. Did it matter to developers then? Why is it so important now?

IMO this year will be interesting. The last xbox saturated the market around 30 Mil consoles. The 360 should approach that mark by the end of the year, but we'll just have to wait and see if the trend keeps going (which is down BTW after a lot of great games released in 2007): 2006: 9 Mil consoles sold, 2007: 8 Mil consoles sold, 2008: ???

And before I get flamed I own both, just like I owned both a PS2 and Xbox. Games FTMFW!!

xbox only sold 25 mil in the 4years it was out. and xbox didn't have a high attach rate as it does now. ps2 had a better attach rate than the first xbox. last gen dev's made more games for the ps2 than they did for the xbox. because the ps2 had a bigger install base(same as the 360 now)and dev's knew the games would move units on the ps2 than the xbox/GC. so when you say it was the same way last gen. you are either misinformed or running damage control to down play 360 sales.

That this is the launch year for PS3. During the launch year of the PS2 the attach rate was a measly 1.7. Did that have any affect on 3rd party support.

Both systems will get plenty of 3rd party support regardless of 'attach rates' and I'm all for it. To say one is going to get more than the other really depends on the genre of game you are looking for. You want cool 3rd party FPS's or western RPG's, well the 360 is going to get that 3rd party support. You want a cool JRPG or TP action/adventure, well the PS3 is more likely to get those. Want both, get both systems.

Developers are going to make games that will sell well. PS3 is generally japanese style games and the 360 is generally US style games. If a developer is making a game in one of these 'styles' it makes more sense to develop it for the system that it will sell more on, and depending on the game the 360 just doesn't sell well w/ non western style games.

I'm really interested in the 360's trend vs. the PS3's trend. Right now the 360 is trending down (9 Mil sold the 1st year, 8 Mil sold the 2nd) w/ not a whole lot to offer in 2008 so far. The PS3 has sold as well as the 360 did it's first year, but it will be interesting to see if it can sell MORE the 2nd year, or if it follows the 360 and actually sells less. W/ the lineup 2008 is promising (we'll see if it comes true) I can't see any way that this happens, but it still is possible (look at Halo & Bioshock, great software sales, boosted HW sales, but still sold less through the year than the previous year). This year will be very interesting indeed.
