WiiMote Vs PlayStation Eye
36
When the PlayStation Eye was first announced people thought it was just the successor of the EyeToy, as we approach each successive game show Sony released more and more games that are developed exclusively for the PS Eye.
Let's take a quick look at some of these games. Each of these games uses the camera in a different way and let us examine how the Nintendo WiiMote is different than or similar to the PS Eye
Hit the Jump to see the article, it's very detail and very long with image and videos. I won't bother posting the whole thing. A very interesting article.

Well, I use SynthEyes for 3D camera tracking on my Mac & there is no way that a single camera attached to anything is going to be able to resolve a 3D coordinate system for the objects in it's view to even begin an attempt to track them. 3D match moving is an extremely tricky process even when reference points & distances are set manually for a scene which is why the movie studios use equipment that costs more than most people's homes.

1.3 - Not to mention...
Very small movements, like the twisting of your wrist, or the speed at which you do the movement.
I agree with Exodus (great band by the way...), real-time 3D movement is a tricky thing to do properly with a camera. While the PS3 has sufficient horsepower to manage the calculations required to keep real-time spatial movement, it does not have enough power to calculate all those complex matrices, and give you the same quality of graphics it does now.
While there is ongoing research on robotic spatial interaction, these technologies are only in the research stage. I don't think Sony would release something that will only work half the time.
The Wii controller on the other hand, does not use ultra fancy electronics, but it does use very complex algorithms to calculate spatial movements, and velocity, but it does it using infrared and accelerometers.
Also, let's not forget the cost. The wii has the PS3 beat in this regard, and that is even before buying the eye toy...

Even simple movements like marching in place... WiiFit will be able to detect this, but a camera? Imagine watching a person marching in place from the front. The camera would be able to see that the objects "legs" were getting shorter, but wouldn't be able to determine why without 1st assuming the object was a human being. Next the computer would have to guess why the human's legs were getting shorter... are they're knees moving upward & out or staying in place with foot raising behind them?
Camera tracking... messy stuff, but that's what gridded green screen sets & those "ping pong" ball suits are for.

13.1 - who cares if the wii mote is utilized in every wii game.
As long as the wii mote is utilized in a fun and well thought out way. Then its good for gaming. Because nobody wants a cool wii game that doesn't have good controls. They want a game with smooth and easy wii mote controls and extremely fun to play right? right.
So far the games out for PSEye are very addictive and have great controls. The eye detects every movement very well, causing a fun casual experience. So while all wii games may make use of the wii mote, that still doesn't mean they are all AAA fun games with the best controles.

you cant beat nintendo in its own game , plus if sony gose that way using motion capture it just proves to the videogame industry that nintendo changes the way games are played not sony or MS . so when the wii runs its course , the capcoms , konamis, tecmo , ea , sega , on on will have some of the freshest ideas for nintendos next gen first .

couldnt you just sell cheap ass accesories that the camera can detect every type of motion from? Like some bar to use as a bat, club, sword, steering wheels, and other stuff???? Would make a lot of sense if they coded them with the stuff the cards from eye of jusgement have because the eye can detect little movements on them and the angles as well.
Plus motion detection from sony would be way different and better than nintendos. Sure it would strenthen the idea that motion sensing is the way to go but who said nintendo thought of it first? They did implement it first but sony and microsoft may have better plans for it.
Plus motin sensing is optional not like the wii conrollers which dont feel right when you using them as steering wheels even though that one of their "strong-points".

No, because the computer cannot detect what the camera cannot see. If you swing the Wii-mote behind your back the Wii still knows how the Wii-mote is moving, but if you were to swing a "cheap accessory" behind your back the camera would lose sight of it & the computer could only guess as to where it might have gone. Guessing wouldn't translate into very tight control of on-screen action.
Eye of Judgement is not a technical marvel by any stretch of the imagination. It's quite simple to program a computer to recognize a specific object moving around a 2D plane, but the moment you begin moving that object around in 3D space things become infinitely more difficult. You really need a minimum of 3 camera's to even begin implementing the functionality of the Wii-mote via camera tracking.

That after making fun of Wii owners for waving their arms around like idiots, the PS3 fanboys are now latching on to a system that actually makes them get up and... well wave their arms around like idiots.
Card game looks cool though. I'd get it, but the $600 plus cards plus game plus eye pricetag looks a bit steep just to live out Yu-Gi-Oh.

i knew i was getting the pseye, but now i'm sure i will get the new eye.
but nintendo did do some movement with the power glove along time ago with the NES.my cousin bought one.it was basic, but it is very simular to what the wiimote does.wiimote just does it better.
but if someone asked me what's cooler,it would have to be eyetoy.it reminds me of back to the future 2.marty was playing a game(cafe 80's) and thought he was good.then the kids behind him said,
"you got to play with your hands?!"
i always think of that when i play the eyetoy i bought for ps2.but the eye is definitely better.i road a hoverboard and it recognized me jump.
i've hit objects like the article mentions......but:
he fails to mention the eye creating objects out of thin air,and it attaching to your hand.and you can use it as a weapon.like a sword.
he fails to mention the eye placing masks and helmets on your face.
he fails to mention the presentation at E3 2005 where the eyetoy creator used cups to play with simulated water.
i believe the eye recognizes how close you are.if it can see the object, and the distance, the eye could lock onto the motion controller and do things very simular to the wiimote.
i'm left handed,so i would hold the controller sideways in my hand.and since it is so light,i could hold it where my left thumb could reach the right analog stick, the face buttons and r1/r2 using my pointer finger.if i wanted to pause,i use my thumb to hit start.the other fingers hook underneath the controller.
right handed users would control the left analog stick with their thumb facing the controller the other way,the d pad as buttons, and their right pointer finger for l1/l2.and then push select for pause using the thumb.and the other fingers hooking underneath.
all other buttons would be shut off to not interfere.
but sony could definitely outdo what nintendo is doing easily with enought thought.
mag lev..................

Are you really deleting and then again creating your account? Since I really, really cannot understand how you can keep those five bubbles.
But, a camera? Compared to an independent unit that sends data about it's position, how fast it goes when it moves and where it moves, namely Wiimote? I'll let you have a guess on this one.

But the camera has better gameplay then just a stupid gimmick that you can control with just your arm.
So with PlayStation Eye you are in the game, and with the las gen. cube gimmick its just stupid boring and the gameplay just makes this games even worst look at zelda and metroid.
so with PlayStation Eye the games for it are 100% design to be like that on the wii all of their games are just forcing you to play games with a stupid gimmick and dont get me started about the Sixaxis its 100 times better then the wii gimmick by far.

Ya. That's why Sixaxis works as pointer, hmm? And do read what theExodus said about the matter. You'd really need at least three cameras to get it work in the way Wiimote does atm.
Pray, tell me, how does PSeye beat wiimote currently when it comes to gameplay? Does it register speed? Does it register position, as in, swinging from the back to front, even if your hand was behind you to begin with? Does it register tilt? Can you "drive" with it as you can in Excite truck?
But hey, whatever you feel it to be the best for you, I'll stick to my Wiimote anyday over a camera or a controller that had motion sensing hastily applied.

As a Wii owner I give Sony props for the Eye. Thank god Sony is innovating when MS refuses to.
But I find it hard to compare the Eye with the WiiMote. Yes, they're both "motion control", but they're just completely different. It's not like there's a PS3mote and we can compare the responsiveness of the two 'motes'.
The only thing lacking about the Eye so far is the lack of possibilities for hardcore uses of it. Though Eye of Judgement certainly caters to some of that audience. The Wiimote is perfect for FPS games, when implemented correctly. I drool at the thought of widescreen Halo 3 using the WiiMote. (bet I'll get flamed for all that)
