Mom finds stolen Xbox 360 in son's room, calls police

In Winneconne, Wisconsin, a teen now faces theft charges after his mother contacted the police about discovering an Xbox 360 and several items in her son's bedroom. A police report states that when the mother asked her 16-year-old son about the discovery, he claimed that one of his friends gave the Xbox 360 to him. The mother then reported the finding to authorities on September 18 after that friend knew nothing about the console or other items, according to the Oshkosh Northwestern. The teen is being held in the Fond du Lac Juvenile Secure Detention Facility for two counts of theft and two counts of criminal trespass to a dwelling.

Mate, when I was seven years old I tried stealing something from the local supermarket. My mother found out and marched my behind right to the manager of the store, who ripped me a new one, and threatened me with legal action. I learned right then and there that stealing was WRONG.

At 16 years old this kid should know the difference between right and wrong, and if he doesn't (as is obvious by his poor attempt at hiding the fact that he had stolen the game system) then I don't think there's a better way out there then a bit of reality. He steals something, then he faces the legal system.

Trust me, it's a good thing. This mother made the right decision, no doubt about it.

Perhaps she wanted her child to actually see the repercussions of his criminal actions? I don't really see anything wrong with that, personally. If a child thinks he can get away with theft for minimal repercussions, then what is to prevent him from doing so again in the future?

I really don't understand why everyone seems to be against the mother in this. Now I don't know anything more than what the article is presenting, but in the context of said article, the 16 year old son committed a crime, and was well aware of the fact that what he had done was wrong. Therefore I don't see any reason why the mother should NOT have turned her son over to the police. Kids don't need to be coddled now a days, despite what they want to think. You do the crime, you pay the time, as the saying goes.

This is, of course, based solely upon the information provided, which is most certainly not the whole story. But cut and dry as it is, the kid obviously knew he had done something greviously wrong, and then lied to his parents about it. As things stand, I think she did the right thing. A little dose of reality should turn this kid right.

I 100% agree with you. If he iss old enough to do the crime then he should face the consequences. I am a parent and I want my kids to know right from wrong and be respectful of the law. If they commit a crime then they should punished. If the mom committed the crime the punishment would fit, so why is it wrong for the child to learn the same lesson?

until the inprobable somehow happens to your kids, if you have any. Having a criminal record is a life sentence in itself. Employers don't offer many jobs to ex-criminals. If I caught my child stealing then I failed to do my job which is parenting. The actions I would take would be numerous so I won't bother to discuss that. Bad parenting I say for not intervening soon enough and having to resort to calling the police. She should probably go to jail for child negelence and sent the kid to a rehabilitation center + probation.

You are right in so much as I wouldnt of done my job as parenting. I have four kids, and I wouldnt hesitate to do the same as this mom. The kid also had ammo and knives so that is just a short stop away from an armed robbery. My children DO and WILL know right from wrong and cause and effect. If you commit a crime you get punished. That is the bottom line, I understand what you say if it was your own kid, I suppose it depends on a lot of factors. If this was the first time the child has done something like this then maybe it would be a bit over the top, but it would still be good to scare him. If he is a problem child anyway then yes, call the police and maybe send him to military school.

@ JasonXE - He's a juvenile so he's not going to have a criminal record that will affect the rest of his life IF he gets his act together now which is what his mother is trying to force him to do. He was involved in a string of burglaries so calling the police wasn't a knee-jerk response by any stretch of the imagination.

Also, I'm not sure you can conclude that she's a negligent parent from this report as she DID call the police. If she actually didn't care about the kid would she have taken the time to bother?

Considering how long the kid has been doing this and what he has been stealing, just making him take the stuff back would not be effective in keeping him from repeating his actions. Mom was obviosly tired of his crap and called in the police. Good for her, especially since the kid was stealing gun clips and knives. Seriously, do you think if the kid slipped up and surprised someone at their home while he was ripping them off, that the victim wouldn't press charges against him? Even if he returns the 360, charges might still have been pressed against him. He's just lucky he didn't run in to any shoot first gun owners while leaving their homes- he could be dead now instead of in juvie.
