First person shooter (FPS) is a video game genre utilizing an on screen view that effectively simulates the playable character's perspective and the focus on the use of ranged weapons such as guns.

Present day first person shooter games took off in popularity when the home computer was equipped enough to handle the 3D elements that these games entail. ID Software's Wolfenstein 3D and Doom are both highly touted and considered innovations in the genre. Doom in particular became a synonym of the genre whereby FPS games were called "Doom clones".

Out of the 15 FPS titles in the list, 13 originated on PC, 1 on Xbox, and 1 on N64.

you can't forget the n64, but it was never online, xbox pushed the online aspects of a console fps.

I use to play Alien trilogy on my PS1 all the time. I don't know of any other FPS's on PS but Alien trilogy was pretty fun for it's time.

got it right with that List, the N64 did great with FPS's partically because of that controller they had with the Trigger, even though some didn't like it, I thought it worked well with Goldeneye007.

After these got Played for along time, as I remember, I hopped unto pc fps gaming,(DOOM, WOLFENSTIEN, DUKE, UT, RED FACTION, QUAKE, HL..etc) because no other console besides the N64 was pushing FPS's.(at least not like on PC's)

Not until Original XBOX debuted and the new console FPS king was crowned. It was "Halo all Dalo" when I was in college(you know it). Then they introduced XBL, which was something consoles never really pushed, besides my beloved Dreamcast, well as you know, the rest is History, as far as CONSOLE FPS GAMING went ONLINE.

Here we are today with COD, MOH, and all these new franchises multi-playing "ONLINE" on a Console.

Notice I stress the "Online aspect of Console FPS gaming, even though split screen was fine for a while with Goldeneye007.
