And that's what bothers me the most. No matter how repetitive Mario games yet, I always find them to be the most fun, and I never ever get tired of playing them.

But if I have to keep shooting the same aliens for more than 2 games, I'm out.

thats what i hate about rachet and clank a crack in time, theires just too much action and not enough platforming. mario proves you dont need total action to make a fun platformer.

I guess a platformer doesn't really need a story.
The princess being kidnapped is just a motive to reach the end, nothing more.

That's because most Mario games are completely different. Every game is unique in some way. Halo is always the EXACT SAME THING. It gets old after 8 years. @_@

Master Chief could never be the face of gaming....unlike Halo, Mario games are often rated "E" for everyone. Mario games just bring a different formula that tend to transcend time...

When you say repetitive, are you talking SSB and/or mario kart? I mean cause the Mario platform games really are different from the next...you can see the evolution in each version.

Master Chief ISN'T and will NEVER be as popular as Mario. MC is just popular in NA, the rest o f the world doesn't even know him. So no, he wouldn't "take the throne".

I love the diversity and just general quality of the Mario franchise. People complained about milking Mario after E3 due to four mario games being announced but lets go through them:

Mario vs Donkey Kong: Minis March Again is possibly the best DSiware game with level creation and online sharing.
Mario and Luigi RPG 3 is one of the best games on the DS and is excellently fun.
New Super Mario Bros Wii looks to be an awesome 2D platformer and is getting great reviews.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 is also likely to be of fantastic quality, especially considering the first one.

Look at that. Four different genres(Puzzle, RPG, 2D Platformer and 3D platformer) and yet Mario is awesome in all of them.:D
