6 Games that shouldn't have 'M' ratings

Have you ever found yourself picking up a game and wondering to yourself why on earth it has that little 'M' plastered on the front of it? Some games like Grand Theft Auto 4, Resident Evil 5, and Modern Warfare 2 are rated Mature for good reasons, but there are certain cases where one must question what was going through the ESRB's minds when they rated these. Here are six games that were unfairly rated M.

1 - I agree completely,
ESRB needs to get it together and stop giving games that deserved lower scores and vice-versa the wrong labels

What I was actually surprised at is how Uncharted 2 was able to get only a T rating. Then I looked at my Uncharted 1 and said wow, this really is a T game? Wtf, I had always thought it was M rated.

ESRB just fails. But not that I care anymore. I used to when I was under 18, now I can just buy whatever the hell I want.

1.3 - Halo 3 was rated M for marketing purposes and to ensure blockbuster sales
MS didn't want hardcore Halo gamers to see a T rating and think the series changed in content..but MS wanted parents to walk by while the game was being played and say, "Hey, this isn't so bad.."....if anything, the M rating probably had more to do with potty mouth Xbox LIVE multiplayer sessions...LOL

@ Blaze - yep, Uncharted 2 is like The Temple Of Doom was back in the day...lol..since it's perceived as a light-hearted adventure, it gets a lighter rating

Why is Halo 3 rated M? There's very little blood, very little bad word. It's all colorful. It should be E10 or T at the most.

Yeah, Uncharted 2 surprised the sh!t out of me. Definitely should have been rated M. I could see the UDF getting away with a Teen rating, but not Among Thieves. Still my personal GotY though.

The only thing in UC2 that might have justified an M rating was *SPOILER ALERT* when the hitler wannabe shot the camera dude (can't remember their names.) Nothing else was really that bad imo.

**MASSIVE SPOILERS**

Close combat produced loads of blood if you beat 'em into a corner. Also, the Ice Cave level where you first meet the demon yetis, there were several butchered wolves in the area with very realistic blood depictions (read MOST realistic). You also have Nathan when he got shot by Flynn and was bleeding out on the train and Elena when the grenade went off. How exactly could U2: Among Thieves not be rated M? While the game didn't drop any F bombs that I'm aware of, the main characters would cuss like no tomorrow. ESRB should reevaluate the T rating for Uncharted 2.

The Last Remnant is probably an M because of the fight scene between Emma and The Conqueror and also the few times they use profanity in the game. It could probably have passed as a T and it's only a borderline M.

For the time, the first Halo was pretty M territory, the amount swearing, blood, etc. Not to mention corpses mutating right in front of you!

And excessive use of it can get a rating pushed up to an M.

I heartily agree with this list. If the monsters in DMC4 only let out bits of black mist, and that counts as blood, then there were FOUNTAINS of blood in Shadow of the Collosus. There is little swearing, nothing sexual (though scientist lady was pretty hot) and relatively mild violence in Assassin's Creed, which was rated M. Uncharted 2 had some pretty suggestive sequences with Chloe, and lots of language and there wasn't too much blood but there was a lot of violence throughout compared to AC. Same with inFamous and those were both rated T, which kinda baffled me.

An interesting observation but assassination, politics, and religion are subjects better left to "mature" gamers. MA doesn't just mean sex, language and violence.

10 - Why give Uncharted 2 Teen and Give a Game like Last Remnant Mature?
The ESRB need to explain these discrepancies.

Halo, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo: ODST, Halo: Reach, and the Halo: Official Coloring Book should all be rated T.

Hell, if Halo is rated M, Uncharted should be rated M...

12 - ESRB is so unpredictable
Sometimes I think that they rate a game M "just in case" people complain, but then I play Infamous and Uncharted 2 and wonder why they're not M and The Last Remnant and the Halos are. I really don't care at this point.

Are you serious? How on earth would Sony get away with paying off ESRB? They would need a lot of money, and why would they even do that in the first place? It hardly matters because the snot nosed kids who tea bag people online still end up getting the games. It annoys the hell out of me. I wish kids couldn't get these games. Pisses me off daily.

14 - I remember something like this...
This is exactly like the complete disappearance of the G rating for movies. What happened to that anyways? No one ever uses that anymore. I agree with this article that those games should be rated T, which is an issue to me as a teenager who can't get M games.
I really start to hate the ESRB when something obviously should have been rated T.

If I am not mistaken Halo was given a T rating but MS asked for the M. I was just reading Halo: Fall of Reach to get ready for Halo Reach and at the end of the book it says now you know the story about the Fall of Reach and continue on in Halo:Combat Evolved. It showed the rating was T for the first Halo game. So either MS asked for the M or they added stuff to get the M.

I could care less about ratings. If people weren't such lousy parents and taught their kids right from wrong we wouldn't need rating systems. Instead people are just lazy and censor what their kids watch and play. I remember back when I was in elementary school my friend couldn't watch WWF (yes it was back in those days) because his mom said it was too violent. I was like "seriously." That's when I started hating censorship. I know it's kind of dumb but not being able to talk to my best friend about the smackdown being layed on someone really pissed me off back then.

There's no sex scenes, but there was a naked Keanu being dumped out of the waste tunnel early on. Plus the disturbing scenes of machines harvesting humans (and that scary "wired baby" scene). Hardly any cursing, mostly a "holy sh*t" here and there. And then of course there's the anti-establishment undertone (agents looking like IRS auditors).

I'm going to come across as a bit of a Puritan here, but just bear with me...

What if all these games that are semi-realistic (Halo is colorful, yes, but there are people inside those suits, and they are carrying guns and shooting each other) should be rated M? What if it's about the violence, and not how much blood you see?

Obviously, if the violence is what ESRB is looking at, then games like Uncharted 1 and 2 SHOULD be rated M too.

I think the ESRB rating is like most game reviews: terribly inconsistent from game to game. Honestly, though, I think that it doesn't hurt to rate games M. Let the parents be involved (if the ratings were actually enforced). It doesn't hurt the kids, and it encourages parents be a part of their kids' lives.

Don't get me wrong, I was a kid not that long ago, and I liked being able to walk to the game store and buy what I wanted. I know where younger gamers are coming from, and I think the ESRB need to overhaul their system, but I don't think that M rating is keeping games out of the hands of most kids, and I don't think violence (even without blood) is a bad reason for an M rating.
