BioWare's Watamaniuk: Mass Effect 2 on PS3 statement a "misunderstanding"

Jay Watamaniuk is backing down from his statement that Mass Effect 2 is "probably" coming out for PS3. But maybe it's just damage control? Let's take a look at what BioWare was saying about rumors of a PC version of Mass Effect back in 2007.

Too many misunderstandings. It's starting to sound like a badly kept secret.

"As we've said before, Mass Effect is planned as an Xbox 360 exclusive title. This means we are not working on a PC version and have no plans to start making one."

And they didn't, which most of their PC fans (me included) hated. In the end it was ably ported by Demiurge. I hope that's not ME2's fate; to be ported by outside devs.

Difference being that it would have been far easier to port over.

The problem with Mass Effect 2 on the PC is that when EA bought BioWare, they had to make a deal with Microsoft to publish Mass Effect on the PC and the deal with Microsoft was to publish Mass Effect on PC and future Mass Effect titles. I would think Microsoft would have taken steps then to protects it's interest, which is probably what the timed exclusivity. But what's the point without the first and it seems Microsoft didn't allow them to publish the first on the PS3 or they would have already. Probably to handicap the potential release of Mass Effect 2 on PS3.

When I saw that the article was translated, I already knew it was misquoted and a misunderstanding. I didn't believe they really said that.

I am fairly sure that when EA splashed out nearly a billion dollars on Bioware, they got full control over all their IPs, including Mass Effect. If Microsoft still had any say in it, then I would be surprised.

1.5 - I still think that we're going to see the trilogy be released when Mass Effect 3 is realesed.
I think that they will release them all on a single blu-ray months or even a year after the 360/PC version of Mass Effect 3 is released.

Lol sorry Luna Valhalla did you just say that Microsoft wouldn't have a say in what EA does concerning a title that Microsoft owned?

Are you kidding? You think MS doesn't make deals?

Well that's one way to look at it I suppose.

My point in saying so was that it SHOULD NOT be ported at all if it's taken on by outside devs. Do we really want to see another EA port to PS3? Sounds like an "inferior version" waiting to happen. I dunno about Demiurge, but they don't have much pedigree.

Mass Effect 2 on PS3 would be rather silly without Mass Effect 1, if you ask me.

Not really. Most of us already played it on PC. It wouldn't be gamebreaking.

If most PS3 owners are playing it on PC, then there really isn't any point to a PS3 version. I also agree with Pandamobile. Mass Effect 2 on PS3 wouldn't make sense if Mass Effect 1 wasn't released first.

do people forget how much more space a ps3 disk(BR) can hold compared to a 360 game(DVD9)? mass effect was on one disk so Bioware could easily put 1-2 on a single blue-ray

2.8 - sorry but they would need to have the first one out as well if the second one was to come
Its a rpg, with a meaty story, you can't just skip games like Dead Rising 2,.

If they want the average joe to pick up the second game, the first would help

Is very simple Bioware has no say about there games, only EA can decide and as you all know EA loves money so the only logical solution Is that they will do what ever makes the more money.

Wow...how many times can Bioware continue to put the toothpaste back into the tube before it all catches up with them? How many times have they said "probably", "maybe", "it could happen", only for them to say that they were "misquoted", that a listing was an "error", or whatever, just a day or so later? How many times do they get before the MSM begins to question their loyalty to their own word here?

This is why I hate that the gaming press being too chicken sh!t and too scared to get on a dev's balls about things like this! Stomp all over that NDA if you have to and ask them the questions that you were contracted NOT to ask, because they are obviously hiding sh!t from you, and CYAing themselves by using an NDA.

8 - It still amazes me that people are still talking about this subject.
A PC is pretty standard in people's homes nowdays like TV's. I don't know anyone i know that dosen't have at least 1 PC and a laptop.

The way i look at these x360 console exclusives are not exclusive at all so i don't get why there is such a big fuss about it going to the PS3. Also ME is overrated. I loved baldurs gate more.

I wish console people would make up their minds about PC gaming. Is it the sport of rich men or does everyone have a PC in their home capable of playing today's games? Can't have both. So why do I hear both when it suits a particular argument?

Not directed at you specifically, cmbre.

it depends. If you are like me that just want to play the game without the bell's and whistle that a dedicated gaming rig can offer then a standard PC is more than enough to get comparable proformance to console versions. Sub 400 PC than i need for my work at home in any case.

so because they're saying that it was a misunderstanding, you believe they're covering it up? The reason it's a misunderstanding, is because right now, even BioWare doesn't know. They know it's coming to PC/360 (which is multiplatform), but they have no way of telling what's really going to happen. If it really does come to PS3, I expect it in the future, after it's already been released.

11 - Microsoft does not own Mass Effect as an IP
So it is strictly up to the developer and/or what sort of closed door deals were made with Microsoft on limited exclusiveness. The ONLY way that Microsoft could PREVENT Mass Effect 1 or 2 being released to another platform is to control it completely by owning the IP. Mass Effect was a great game IMO. The more platforms it reaches, the better. Now can I have a next gen KOTOR?

@jay2 below... they might be able to sqeeze both games on a standard 25GB Bluray, the dual layered may not even be necessary... depending on how much content they add to ME2, remeber a PS3 version is likely to come with added content as many other titles have done.

People who keep saying about ME 1's game save being carried over should remember that Blu-ray has 50GB+ of space, and the 2 games would take, what, 16GB.

Yes and what would they charge for 2 games on 1 disc?

EDIT: Look at it practically from a publishers point of view, what would they charge, how much would it cost to do it, who would buy it?

I own a ps3 but fanboys don't look at practical terms.

12.2 - @jamescagney
I can see a reason to call that a "real" Ultimate/Deluxe Edition and charge $79.99 for it.

Edit 1: I think $59.99 for Mass Effect2 and $20 for Mass Effect 1 is a fair and attractive deal. I wouldn't push it past that price point, or you will have too many people waiting for a sale to hit.

@ guys below:
They could release Mass Effect 2 by itself @ the regular price for multiple console owners who may have already bought ME1 on the 360(like me).

If people can afford to buy WiiFit, then they can certainly pony up the cash for these two gems. Mass Effect is a great game IMO, as long as they offer the regular version @ regular price, I don't see an issue.

EDIT 2: Thanks jamescagney and arnon for pointing out the flaws in my original statement. I didn't make my point clear on the initial post.

Who has the money to pay it? How many sales would that get?

Btw, nice edit artsaber. Considering you first posted a $79 price point for the 2 games together as one. But nm.

12.5 - I dont get this
What difference would it make whether they released it on 1 disc or 2. They could probably load the blu ray with all kinds of documentary style footage or find some way to fill the space.

Either way, the whole thing is wrapped up in red tape that we don't have access to. Whether they might choose to release it separately or on one disc really doesnt matter unless they have the rights to do so. We in the gaming community don't know what kinds of deals were inked.

Mass effect is made with the unreal engine and doesnt that engine hate the ps 3 or atleast not optimized for the ps 3. We shall see because with most pc/360 games discussion the ps 3 fan boys have a good gaming pc so they dont miss sh!t.

Just was I thought, they don't confirm anything, the only chance is EA, and by their logic another console means more money, so It can be release for the PS3 as well
