Sony's Key to Success=God of War Collection?

Koku Gamer writes: "With Sony's recent announcement of the God of War I and II coming to the Playstation 3, Sony could have all the keys to the castle of success. With the release of the Slim PS3 at a ridiculously low price of $299, all those gamers who have yet to cross over to the next gen of gaming can easily afford to. But some of Sony's biggest hits this gen have been new games that weren't on previous platforms. PS2 gamers haven't gotten the enjoyment of Uncharted or Resistance. Obviously without a PS3, they couldn't but sequels make console transitions easier for gamers unwilling to make that jump. With the initial high price of $600 and very few familiar games, many gamers feared making the huge leap of faith on Sony. With the release of Metal Gear Solid 4 and a slightly lower price that transition became easier. But this holiday, the decision will be simple for those still to by the PS3."

Put kratos on a bottle of mountain dew and ill buy it, sony should really hype up kratos to the levels of master chief, the GOW collection is an amazing idea on sony's part. it'll definitely sell thats for sure.

If I saw Kratos on any pop bottle I would just chuckle, roll my eyes and walk away. Lame idea.

Maybe we should put him on cereal boxes too?

1.5 - I don't care if Sony don't put Kratos on anything
because they already decided to put it on Bluray and that's what matters the most! I'll be buying this collection and GoW3 later on! AWESOME move by Sony! I have only played CoO on PSP and I think it's a great game! I didn't have my PS2 when GoW and GoW2 were released and this is a great news for gamers like me! I was always craving for a new PS2 everytime I saw these 2 games at my local game store but I always refused, thinking that I don't need another PS2 but now I have another option! so...should I get another PS2 or wait for this?

Just like a boxer can not win a fight with only his right hook. Sony is trying to win this fight with a flurry of combos. GOW bluray is just a vicious uppercut.

yeah dude...price cut, system redesign (at least gets attention up), Uncharted 2, another R&C, possibly GT5 this year, new peripherals, and how ever many big multiplats (MW2, AC2, etc.)...this GoW collection is just another bullet in the clip...

no matter how you look at it...Sony definitely isn't messing around anymore...

Is that even possible Hagaf, can you hype up a SP game without MP to the same level as a MP game like Halo, I do not think so, because SP games give you so much replay value after you beat them on every difficulty.

Estranged - 98 days 7 hours ago
3.1 - And what makes a mp game have so much replay value?
Especially when every MP game contains the same exact modes used since early 90s shooters? I don't find it to be very refreshing or worthy of playing unless the gameplay is really different.

The popularity of the Wii, and especially the 130+ million PS2 owners...paint a very clear picture as to how important online gaming is to the normal gaming public...

I agree with you, don't get me wrong...online gaming adds tons of replay value to a full price title...but we are DEFINITELY a minority for that...tons of people don't care for it...and just because GOW games don't have multiplayer options, they are still incredibly popular...

and thats it overall...Sony hits everyone all at once...they hit people that want to play online...people that don't...and people that want to do both...and not with only one genre...they have big franchises across the board entirely...that is something that Sony has always understood (variety in genres) better than any other company imo...

i think the GOW collection is a great hype building idea, along with sales gauge. what better way to boost interest in a game thats finally making its way on the ps3 than to re-release the games that make it famous lol

yeah marketing wise its almost brilliant...because how many PS3 owners are stuck with a PS3 that will not play ps2 games?...and how many of those guys have seen GoW III trailers, thought it looked cool, yet know nothing about the franchise...and would otherwise skip gow III simply from feeling 'out of the loop'?...

so Sony piles it onto a disc that any PS3 can play...with updated graphics, and updated features like trophy support...almost making the 'old' franchise feel brand new on the PS3...only as an appetizer to what many industry leads are saying 'the greatest looking video game ever made' releasing just months later?...as far as putting the public first, it makes a lot of sense...I hope they would do something similar with SoTC or something before the last guardian drops, even though thats seperate in the franchise sense...

15 - Yeah...
The key to success wasn't implementing Blu-ray, lowering the price of their console in addition to the size, heavily investing in their 1st and 2nd party titles, or even offering online services for free.

That's right, it's a game that sold a whopping 3.2 million around the world when more than 120 million people around the world owned the device, compared to the 12 million plus sold of Call of Duty Modern Warfare for the barely 50 million people who own a PS3 or Xbox 360. Or the 13 million plus sold of Grand Theft Auto for those same barely 50 million people.

With logic like this, Sony can't lose!

Look, don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of the series, will be pre-ordering this as soon as it pops up on Amazon.com, but this isn't a logical argument for the success of Sony. Especially when measures with a modicum of intelligence alongside all the other strides Sony has made to-date to turn a $599 hunk of a machine into a $299 smaller machine with more possibilities due to improved software, more support, and a medium that is increasing in popularity and functionality.

15.1 - Um....
PS2 was over saturated at that point, COD also includes PC gamers, and COD never was really that hot back on PS2/Xbox anyway. It was more of a 3rd rate generic shooter that didn't get huge popularity until Modern Warfare.

The one overestimating GoW popularity is the article's writer.

@cdogno

There is something you are letting out of your considerations. PS2 MASSIVE piracy. On a less pirated console GoW sales would have doubled (at least) those numbers you mention. And lets not forget that Ps2's games library is just overwhelming and GoW as huge as it was, was just two games among that huge (and high quality catalog).

BTW, I do agree with you. GoW collection is the best news for GoW fans, but PS3 key to success is much more than two remastered games.

I can see the piracy point, though it's hard to add that to the equation considering wouldn't similar levels of piracy exist for the 360, at least in percentage?

Also, my numbers above are only for PS3 and 360 sales, doesn't include PC at all, which would make it much more.

Furthermore, the 50 million number doesn't account for the fact that many people own one console but only buy the game for their preferred console.

15.5 - cgoodno, while i do see your point.......i don't think it applies to sony .
they've said during the ps1/2 and currently with the ps3 that they aren't ever wanting just 1 or 2 titles to do well. what they want is a TOTAL library of games (particularly exclusives) to do well. they also look to have a wide variety. just look at some of the series they have: GT, MGS, jak, sly cooper, ratchet, onimusha, GOW, resistance, uncharted, kingdom hearts, team ico games.......etc... etc.... with more being added all the time. (like demon souls, heavy rain, and agent)
GOW series is an important part of the library but is still only 1 piece.
you're placing too much value on game sales of 1 individual game. this GOW1/2 remake is probably going to be the first of a series of remakes. again, it's a LIBRARY of great games sony has. they don't depend on any 1 game.

i did see what you were trying to say though.

15.7 - cgoodno, here is the part of your post i question.
"The key to success wasn't implementing Blu-ray, lowering the price of their console in addition to the size, heavily investing in their 1st and 2nd party titles, or even offering online services for free.

i did read your post the FIRST time. but, i reread it 6 times as you requested. i guess i'm a little dense tonight (i had to bring too much work home with me); so, please, explain how my saying sony doesn't depend on just one game agrees with what i just took from your post and pasted above? i'm not trying to be insulting......but i don't see how you can say i just agreed with that........because i didn't.

hey, i've got some reports to work on and won't be back on tonight. i'll PM you with a response tomorrow if you respond. (please do....as you've gotten my curiosity up as to how i "agreed" with you.)

Beavis, if you couldn't tell that was some very heavy sarcasm, I'm feel really sorry for ya. I mean, I really threw it way out there, especially with the second paragraph, which was providing examples completely contradictory to my actual claim.

Read the last paragraph, though, and you'll see that it wasn't intended to be me agreeing with the concept, but saying, look, what I typed above sounds ridiculous, and so does the logic used in this article.

18.1 - well
I had thought of it before the slim was released. it was either this or release upgraded versions on psn. I was thinking sony would go that route. Upgrade the visuals on some big hits and add trophy support and make them available on psn for around 10-15$ ea.

This is the first but in disc form so there may be more remixes released on psn as well as disc.

18.2 - I too saw all the writing on the wall.....
Remember,
They had a poll asking gamers what they wanted, and a re-release of God Of War 1 and 2 was the winning option.

Also, Sony as a megaconclomerate mulitimedia company, they do re releases all the time with their music and movie divisions...so it was very logical that they would do this. Afterall, they are already doing this with many of their first party hit PS1 games, you don't think they've figured out they can do this with their PS2 games?

However, I personally thought they would have this for the PSN instead of pressing actual hard copies other than SPECIAL EDITION God of War 3 retail disks, which I also thought they might do....hell, they still might.
