What District 9 Can Teach Games. OXCGN Reports

OXCGN:

"By now most of you would have seen District 9. Great movie, yes?

For most people it came out of the blue, little hype and minimal advertising until its release (at least here in Australia), and while perhaps it will be famous for its origins of rising from the ashes of the Halo movie, most will remember it as being a distinctly different type of sci-fi film, and one that can teach games a thing or two."

Games do need to mature a bit story-wise away from the whole "winning" and "good or evil" mentality.

Bioshock's story did have some deeper themes but the gameplay still allowed you to ignore the whole deep stuff too, which kind of detracts from those deeper questions.

With the likes of Batman, District 9 etc, we are now seeing a much more 'real' approach to the movies that have or could have a game connection. Max Payne was great, and true to its storyline, yet had many 'real' aspects to it.

We do need to mature in that level, especially for those games being made specifically for the adult market.

While some gamers (minors) might complain about them not being shoot-em-ups etc, they have to remember, they are getting hold of games not aimed at them (under 18 etc). These games are aimed at a mature audience, and thus need to move ahead with the times

I like how your articles keep it in the realm of being a journalist and not a sensationalist. Keep up the good work.

I also would like to see more interesting characters in video games. As graphics hit a peak, story is going to be all the more important in gaming.

5.1 - Yeah
Stories and new ways of playing games.

I'm sure next generation will be about the feasible peak of graphics before any additional details will be too small to notice, so experimentation with new story structures or player involvement should be a priority.

I really, really enjoyed District 9. I agree games could learn a thing or two from District 9 in terms of narrative and how they convey story elements etc.

7.1 - Hurry up!
Run to your cinema. Right now. DO IT.

Only movie I've seen where the entire (packed) cinema was deathly silent except for moments of "oh my god......".

It really sucks you in that much.

It's what the Halo movie would have been like, the trailer below looks excellent, and way too real in fact, nothing like other game movies. Ideally this will show those in-the-know that he'd be perfect for a Halo movie of some sort.

No over the top gore, yet very believable in both District 9 and the Halo trailer.

There is a District 9 game at the end of the article actually. Runs of the D9 site which is not half bad actually. Check it out, it's after the Halo Movie Trailer
