It seems most people here don't understand. Mario is an Icon because not only is he known by gamers but non gamers also know him. Master chief and Solid Snake are not known by non gamers. But yes PacMan is another good Icon.

That's the original game icon. See if you brain wizards can figure out what game it is. Anyone who's ANYONE on the planet should know wtf that illustration is for.

Without a doubt, few have achieved the status of "Icon". Of the last ~10 years, Master Chief of Halo is certainly the most likely to rise above.

MGS isnt really a widely known game outside of core-gaming.

Where Halo -- And Master Chief -- is appealing enough as a popular media icon that Steven Spielberg is now rumoured (and Peter Jackson before) to want to do a Movie based on him.

Master Chief has certainly risen to "Icon".

2 - Miyamoto is a genius!
A plumber on a quest to save a princess. After all these years, he's still my favorite game icon. :)

3 - Man Mario...
There are barely any franchises and characters that come close to how big Mario is..i think the only one that gets close is Link. I have only recently started playing Mario games starting on the Wii and he and his games are brilliant.

You can't be serious the only you reason you won't see Master Chief in Smash Brothers is because A)Halo is an X-box exclusive B)Smash Brothers is a Wii exclusive and C)The two will never mix. Besides Snake isn't an exclusive character to any system and he was on Nintendo's systems before Sony's, thats why he was on SSBB...that and he's awesome. xD

For those who are new to the interbutts, and I say this because of the disagrees he got, "In before Master Chief > Mario" means that he's waiting for someone who, in his opinion, is very dumb and thinks Master Chief is beter than Mario. So he's not saying that MC is better ; it's the opposite. He thinks that saying this would be stupid.

You guys...

Mario is the most notable gaming icon no doubt.

But how does this entire article go without naming Link? Zelda games crush Mario games to smithereens IMO.

I don't agree with the title. There will be more gaming icons. Actually, isn't Mario the original gaming icon?

8 - Isn't
like 80% of those mario games bundled?.

If Sony bundled a game franchise with every PS console sold it would have sold more than 200 million.

Sales shoudn't really be considered much. Mario changed gaming imo. That to me is why its a gaming icon.

How did Sony get in the conversation? They currently do not support an official mascot. End of story. "If Sony did this, if Sony did that"... If Sony made ketchup I bet it'd taste great. But they aren't doing it and conceivably after 10+ years, aren't interested in supporting one. By chance or design, that's all there is to it.

I'm recovering from a lung infection. Forgive me if my taste in humor has taken a dive. :P

If anything, one has to give it up to Mario. I broke 8 NES remotes trying to beat Super Mario Bros. at age 7.
2nd play through with fast enemies and Buzzy Beetles was a b!tch back then.

@disagrees LOL!

10.1 - Totally agree...
Without Pac Man...there might not be a home console market. Pac Man was the reason why the mainstream migrated toward the Atari back in the day. They have since defecated all over the Pac Man name, but he WAS the original ICON. Mario has had the staying power. However, this is as much a tribute to the fact that it is Nintendo's "go to guy" for console and software sales. Not saying that Mario is NOT worthy of iconic status, for he very much IS. All in all, I don't know if there will be a SINGULAR icon again. There is too much competition for that position in the industry now. Mario really only had to fight off Sonic for a couple of years. After that, Crash and Jak just didn't stand a chance. (however great they were in their own rights)

exactly, peoples vision get cloudy when it comes to giving nintendo their dues. I'm not a nintendo fanboy but to say that mario isn't one of gamings biggest icons is just plain ignorant. Mario, Pac Man, Donkey Kong and Link are probably the biggest icons for gamers and non gamers. My mom knows who all these characters are, just from seeing them in pop culture. Snake and Master Chief, she wouldn't have any idea who they are. I think that's when you know you have achieved true icon status, when non gamers, especially our parents/grand parents recognize these characters.

13 - Master Chief and icon lol
There are more notable characters that are more iconic and known compared to master chief lol saying master chief is laughable. Mario revelutionised gaming a good few times, no matter what a character can do or is capable of doing, no matter how big a game is you just cant top Mario. You can never be as big as Mario.

Like it or not, Master Chief is one of the main icons of gaming. I think the top 5 icons would be Mario, Sonic, Link, Pac-Man and a draw between Master Chief and Snake.

14 - Mario's versatility
is forever a testament to Miyamoto's endless well of gaming genius. Only a character as quirky and unique as mario could have made it that long in the gaming world. It's probably true, he is the last great gaming icon.

The thing is if you show non gamer a picture of Mario the majority will know who he is, there's no question there are other famous game characters Link, Donkey Kong, Kratos but I don't think that they have the widespread appeal as Mario. Mario has seeped into non gaming culture too, every generation within modern memory has known about Mario and that's the difference that separates him above the other characters in the gaming world.

funny , I read that Mario was more popular than Mickey Mouse world wide.

Once your parent ( even mine jeez) know Mario, he's Icon Status.

Simple like that.
