Will the new features in UE3 "blow people away"?

Ahmad Dajani from Vgarabia.com said "Epic games aren't happy with all the talk about Killzone 2/Uncharted 2 and how these games are more advanced graphically than Gears 2. So I think Epic games are still hard at work to bring back it's engine at the top of the game"

1.1 - When Epic games made Gears 2
They used an upgraded engine(more like UE3.5) and since that they worked more on UE to make it better.

I think what is featured in the upcoming Gears 2 dlc are some of the new enhancements featured in the UE.

The new UE features will be good, but Epic games must push the engine harder to keep pace with other engines.

I honestly don't care about the hype they are trying to create.
Like last time they showcased the Unreal Engine "3.5", it was a dissapointment when the game finally released.

Gears 2 was an awesome game, don't get me wrong, but the stuff they showcased earlier in the techdemo back in 08 was just pure bull, interms of them incorporating it into the game.

-Thousands locusts running together (most i saw when playing the game was about 40)
-Destructible environments (was in the game but not the level of intensity as in the techdemo)
-Meat Cube physics (nowhere to be found in the game, not the cube itself, but the physics)
-Water physics (the only thing that was in the game itself, and it was awesome)
-Silver Bubble thingy (i know it probably would've been weird to put it in the game, still.. kinda useless to showcase it then)

So... Interms of them hyping the new engine's capabilities.. i don't give a shiet until i see it running on a game (when the game releases).

I highly doubt the Unreal Engine 3 will improve by leaps and bounds...or blow people away so to speak. That is just PR talking. With that said, more could be done to improve the current version of UE3. Next gen consoles won't be out for another few years so its better to build on success...Besides, Epic is rolling in cash from all of its licensees, why reinvent the wheel? My take: promises are hollow until your able to see the improvements in-game.

Your kidding right? The difference between UE2/3 was huge and when first unveiled had jaws on the floor. Why would UE4 be any different?

Check this image showing UE1/2/3 character models (taken from UT), tell me people couldnt spot the difference.. http://upload.wikimedia.org...

This isnt an updated version of UE3, it's completely rebuilt.

Yeah, that Chart just shows some 3d models be rendered with light and a few texture mappers applied to them

While the mode 3 is impressive, it's more reflective of the next generation in-game models as a whole, rather then reflective of the engine. (in terms of polygons and Texture maps. Nothing to do with the engine per-say)

An engine's bounds can only be tested by it's Memory efficiency and how much is accomplished with in it, and same with the CPU/GPU and their respective clock speeds, which allows the game run more graphical effects at once (include the effects said engine supports).

'it's completely rebuilt.'

Is it?

edit: @SuperM. Yep, that's what Epic said when they were showing off UE3 around the time of the X369s launch.

Ehh its not UE4. Its just an update to UE3. UE4 will be for the next generation of systems.

Gears 2 used UE3.5. Now they are claiming UE3.8 so that should be less graphical enhancements than between Gears and Gears 2.

what set Killzone 2 from any games this generation is how the engine handled particle effects and lightning .

Or lighting?

There was lightning in Killzone 2... but I thought the lighting were far more impressive.

4 - why is Epic so hell-bent on holding onto UE?
if they want to compete with the newer, better engines.........they need to create a newer, better engine. "duh" it doesn't take an expert programmer to figure that out. UE is a dinosaur........Epic needs to let go.

Sarcasm - 124 days 14 hours ago
4.1 -
I disagree.

If they can make pretty significant leaps and bounds with the UE, then why not?

If any engine's a dinosaur, it's the source engine from valve. No improvements over the last decade tells a lot.

beavis4play - 124 days 8 hours ago
4.2 - when i say "dinosaur" - my point is this:
no matter what tweaks Epic makes to UE it won't catch up. why? don't you think ND, GG, insomniac, santa monica studios, rockstar and crytek are going to improve their engines as well? UE had a good run but, i think they've gone as far as they can go with it. if they had something "mind-blowing" to show.......why didn't they use it on gears2? Epic is too good a developer to not see the situation.
they should move their focus to a new engine.

5 - NOT WITH 512 MEG OF RAM CONSOLES HAVE NO.
You are not going to see graphics get that much better than you have already seen on current consoles. They will stretch it out, but nothing to blow you away.
PC though, well that's a different story...............

5.1 - You'd be surprised
Uncharted 2 and God of War III is the best looking games I've seen...ever so far, and the only thing on PC standing against them thus far is Crysis. As long as we as developers can practice good efficiency, you'll be amazed what can be done.

I own a gaming PC though, and I LOVE PC gaming. My PC specs:

Intel i7@2.67
1TB HDD
Nvidia GTX 260
6gb of DDR3

rockleex - 124 days 14 hours ago
5.2 - Not to mention...
Crysis' graphics depends on how powerful your PC is.

If they made Crysis for the PS3 and/or 360, it wouldn't even hold a candle next to Uncharted 1. They just don't know how to code as efficiently as Naughty Dog.

By the way, PS3 1st and 2nd party developers will keep improving significantly with each game they release.

wouldnt be as strong as saying killzone2's engine is the most advanced (the website comments), still uses painted shadows and cuts down on dynamic lighting. UE4 will be sweet if thats what they are working on, not just the dust and stuff.

cryengine 2 is still most advanced i say, needs bits of work but is incredibly techincal. looks like cryengine 3 will be scaled back for the consoles, current tech demos dont show any noticable improvements.

yeah , you can polish a terd (or give it middlewares) all you want its still a terd. That said UT3 is somewhat sweet on a high end pc though not mind blowing. It is high time to start hyping UE4.

Its wierd too when the best looking UE games (Bioshock 1&2, Splinter Cell Conviction) are using Modified UE2.5 instead of straight UE3. Anyone know why they chose this instead of UE3 I might of read 2K's reason once but don't recall?

Epic if you only improve the U3 engine, you will fail even if is the 3.8 or 3,9 you need to work hard from scratch if you want to make jaws drop

Talk is just that talk.. Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2 have proven they are the best engines on consoles. I remember the UE3 update demo they did last year (the one with the meat cube) and while Gears 2 looked better than Gears 1 it was hardly a revelation to the game.

So basically, Epic you can talk all the BS in the world but right now reality shows you don't have an engine that is worthy of standing next to the engines of KZ2 and Uncharted 2 on a technical or visual level.

It's never too late however and I believe Epic is very capable of blowing people away. But less talk more walk please.

12 - People Stop
Comparing games like Uncharted 2, and Killzone 2 which take years to create one game on versus an engine that many games are based on. Most of which show how powerful and diverse the UE 3 is. It's like people want to use four year development cycles to tell us how great a game looks as opposed to playing. We got two Gears title in less time than Gurriella was able to get Killzone 2 out. I'm sorry that doesn't prove the engine is great or powerful. It just means those guys had a hell of lot time to make ONE game. Gurriella needed other developers help just to get the Killzone 2 engine where it is today. They literally shared, because it was hard to get the most out of the PS3. That's the standard we want to judge an engine/games by? 4 years, and lots of technical help, because you can't do it all on your own? Right you guys wait every four years for a game. Morons... Epic create UE3...It's been stable, created some incredible content, and continues to deliver.

Of course Epic has to continue to push their engine, but let's see what games come from Cryengine before we crown it. I think people just like to have something to talk about even they know they sound crazy. This generation would be a wash if every developer moved at the pace that Gurriella moved with getting a game like Killzone 2. I'm glad that with UE3 I got to play games like Mass Effect, Bioshock, Gears, etc.

It doesn't matter what Epic does people are going to hate, and talk dumb just because they have mouths. Sense matters about much as a crack head taking a fire hydrant bath in broad day light. You guys could care less if you are soooooooo wrong.

You know I didn't even have to name Uncharted or KZ2. I could of used MT Framework 2.0 and Capcom as an example. They didn't take 4 years to make an incredible leap from Lost Planet to Lost Planet 2. Not to mention the many other titles they have released at the same time. I know Capcom is actually larger than Epic but Epic is no small timer.

I see Capcom delivering while I see Epic once again running their mouths talking about "blowing people away". You only talk like that when you are worried about delivering quality and somewhere deep inside you realize that maybe you aren't competing on the same level. Epic never misses a chance to run their mouth a bit, but that is business and I understand why they do it. I'm just not buying it until I see it with my own eyes.

UE is an engine for everybody and Epic has made a good living at it. However, the trade off is the results from the engine are mixed. A Jack of all trades but master of none.

We have chrome from the makers of call of juarez, Crytek from the makers of Crysis,Resident evil 5 looks fantastic with it's Framework MT engine.

I'm laughing at Epic because even if they can catch up, they will be surpassed again when Uncharted 3/Killzone 3 come out. Heck I wouldn't put it past Insomniac to make the Resistance engine graphically better than the UE3 engine.

15 - Now if
You compare game sales, and reviews then the peanut gallery goes up in arms. What benchmark do you guys use to say those engine are better than UE 3? MT Framework is amazing without a doubt. Yet, how do you take anything away from Epic and UE 3 to make your point? What criteria do you guys define a successful engine by? If it includes fun games, diversity, etc then what engine this generation does that? Have you spit puddles seen "Shadow Complex". What an ugly same ole, same game that is (Sarcasm)...smh

19 - Kingslayer you clearly have
no clue what you're talking about. The development cycles for both Uncharted games is two years. Killzone 2 was 3 and a half years.

Epic has been revising their engine for a hell of a lot longer.
