Head to Head: Infamous & Crackdown Differences

Koku Gamer writes: "Since its release Infamous has garnered a lot of attention, some of it bad but most of it good. There have been many comparisons made between Infamous and Prototype, but that's not what this article is about. What we want to do is compare it to an old, yet very enjoyable, title of 2007. Yes the closest comparison that can be made to Infamous, in most people's eyes, is to Crackdown. There is no doubt that Infamous is an awesome game. It is an essential purchase for Playstation 3 owners and one of the standout titles of 2009 so far. However many reviewers have on a number of occasions stated that "At its best, Infamous is an amped up Crackdown." To their credit, Infamous is similar, and is probably the most similar game to what is one of the most fun Xbox 360 titles to date. Even so there are more than enough differences between the two. Here is a brief rundown of the differences between the two."

1 - Of course there are differences
Infamous may be better now, but lets see when Crackdown 2 comes out. Hopefully by then Infamous 2 comes out and a better comparison can be made between the 2 franchises. It's not really fair comparing a 2 year old game to a fresh new IP.

Both are awesome games, I'm proud to have them both

I sure hope they go with something unique and new so that they don't look like they copied another game, InFamous is great in its own way but Crackdown 2 will need something new and expand from the original.

"Well let's see when inFamous 2 comes out!"

See how ridiculious that sounds? We are not comparing Crackdown 2.

I love this comment: "At its best, Infamous is an amped up Crackdown"

Since when did amped come to mean "actually has a story"? Stating inFamous is merely a hyper version of Crackdown is the height of jealousy and a public admission of having never played inFamous at all.

I enjoyed Crackdown and not just for the Halo 3 beta since I was already in through a friend at Bungie. But despite the free running they are hardly similar. They only appear so to those that utilize shallow comparisons.

You make great points Morgan, but one game has more time on the other and vice versa. Their both great titles and each have their own type of style.

^^^ Which is my point. These games should be considered on their own. There is no grounds to associate these titles other than "Look, you jump off buildings and you can ramp up abilities" That may sound like there is enough to compare these titles but anyone that has actually played them knows that isn't the case. The entire feeling and expereince of each is vastly different.

If all it takes is one or two such shallow appearances then there are quite a few titles we can toss into the mix.

The amped up Crackdown was a direct quote from edge-onlines Infamous review. I heard this before I played Infamous and when I bought it I thought wtf is similar about the 2??

Oh and the reason I said compare infamous 2 to Crackdown 2 was because Infamous in my eyes is a fair bit better than Crackdown, but only because of development time. Permitting both are released at the same time I believe it would be a much fairer comparison.

Both these franchises have a bright future, and I look forward to both of them

Well and also because it expands and gives you more powers than Crackdown, right?

Crackdown 83%

Infamous 84%

lol pretty equal games. I agree Crackdown 2 will be better though.

I disagree. I think fair is fair. Both companies made a first endeavor into next gen and these are the results. They are what they are and not coulda, shoulda, woulda.

2 - Crackdown..
at its time, Crackdown was one of the best games around now a little dated but still good. Crackdown 2 looks awsome but only time will tell if it will be as ground breaking as its elder brother

I haven't played Crackdown so I can't say much about it, but I have played Infamous and all I can say is - Awesome. The whole time I felt like I didn't need weapons, and I LOVED gliding in the air and kicking people off buildings.

I disagree with such a comparison, not only was Crackdown the first open world next gen game but their is over a 2 year difference between the two. If Crackdown had good elements the inFamous team could have borrowed, improved, etc.

If anything do Protoype since those games have roughly the same development schedule, release, etc.

Those were addressed in the article. The author states that the reason he compared them was because in terms of gameplay Crackdown was more similar in terms of gameplay. That and Prototype has been compared a million times before.

Read the article bro, he addresses all those issues

One thing I do fail to see though is how Prototype just came into the mix, it need to get the proper respect first before you can compare it to the OG's hehe.

Personally I think that Infamous shoulden't be compared to either Crackdown or Prototype.

However I think comparing Prototype and Crackdown is a much more valid comparison.

While I played Infamous and thought it was a great game i really don't get why everyone raves about the game. It was really just your basic Open world game with super powers and I didn't think the story was anything special at all. Almost all of the characters were either completely uninteresting or annoying and the only mattered because of the twist of an ending.

Don't get me wrong it's a great game and i enjoyed my time with it. I just don't understand all the hype.

6.1 - Reibooi The Story Was A Little Corny
But for an open sandbox game it offered a fairly decent storyline. Sandbox games don't offer good storylines, and the twist at the end of Infamous left me wanting to play the sequel even more.

Dude name me another open world game with as tight a storyline as Infamous... You may not like then story but it doesn't negate the fact that it has a pretty deep one compared to other sandbox games on the market.

It's in fact the most focused open world game out there.

The reason it gets so much attention is because the gameplay is really cohesive, the world looks great, electricity is new and VERY exciting and the story is engrossing. I thought it was a really terrific game, and one of the top games so far this year.

I see your point Reibooi, however, ever since GTA the open world games have been constantly praised for it's big world and open feel to do whatever they wish. It's something that excites some peeps and others bores like my self. Either way we'll see them coming as long as the people will buy them.

The open world fad is something of a annoyance if you ask me. Developers seem to like using Open World aspects regardless of if it works or not in the game they are making. For example No More Hero's could have used something else other then a Open World to get you between each boss. Everyone even complained about that aspect of No More Hero's

The rumors of the new Tomb Raider reboot being a Open World game even further confuses me as I see no way they could make that work properly.

I agree they are similar but both stand on their own. However the Co-Op and vehicles in Crackdown and just the scale of the city and the bigger and more badass superpowers of Crackdown(not only the character but the vehicle super powers as well) make it my favorite of the 2.

Stand on top of the highest point in Empire City and then stand at the top of the Agent building in Crackdown to see what I mean about scale.

This articles major fail is not mentioning a huge difference and that is one has online CoOp and the other has no online at all. And no I don't agree with the conclusion.

I agree with the offerings part of your post this comparison is ridiculous because of what you said. Crackdown's game world population is part of the gameplay and not just there for looks.

yeah Crackdown may have seem larger in scale but look at the awful graphics! The semi-cell shaded blah blah is just an excuse for bland graphics. On the other hand infamous has alot of details for an open world game and imo is way better that either crackdown or prototype mainly because it has a story. This gen I am done with games that don't have a decent story, which is why I am skipping Red Faction: Guerrilla, although I hear it's a very fun game.

Its not really a comparison because one has it and the other doesn't. I dont really know how infamous would be if it had co-op anyway, 2 Coles running around would ruin it. Crackdowns layout allows for such a feature to be added in

I loved the cell shaded look vs the jaggie look.

You really thought the story of inFamous was good? They threw that twist in at the end to try and make up for what I thought was a boring story and forgettable characaters. Granted, it had more of a story than Crackdown and the characters are just as easily forgettable but at least in Crackdown I wasn't forced to listen to a cheezy story.

Stand at the top of the highest point in Infamous and there is another difference... You can see everyone in Infamous and you can even drop bombs on them blow up cars and watch them run. I haven't played Crackdown,(have wanted to since I read the first reviews) but the technology in Infamous blows away even GTA4! BLOWS AWAY!!!! You can't throw bombs at little red and white lights!

...I dunno, look pretty equal to me. Maybe you say this because you haven't played both....but only Infamous? I've played both and both are extremely fun games but Crackdown is the only one with co-op and that takes the experience to a whole new level. I think Crackdown 2 next year will be even better.

I would think journalist would be able to come up with much better and more informative articles then this waste of eye sore...C'mon, you people get payed to write about your opinions not waste paper...I'm disappointed at what is put on this site...

Back to the point:
Both games are exclusive to their respectable consoles and I bet they aren't even a lot of people who have played both games to even come up with major comparisons...

comparable to Infamous isn't an easy task but 'drag the lake' and see what you catch.I have played both, like both for varying reasons, but those reasons leave little room for a subjective comparison.Infamous is the better game(imo) but Crackdown is alive on two legs and can hold it's own.I was a little less confused with Infamous vs.Prototype.
New orders for the band unfortunately the beat is the same.

17 - I find Infamous to be like a combination of
a modern Fable, but with Crackdowns wall climbing!

But why must there be so many of these damn Infamous VS. articles?...

If you ask me, it makes PS3 fanboys look insecure of their game... thus trying to justify their purchases of the game by pitting it against anything else thats open world...

I seen enough of Infamous VS. Prototype... let it rest. I own both Infamous and Prototype... I've been over them for quite some time now. Let both games rest. We have too much great new stuff to look forward to anyways!
