Shenmue 3 will not work on current generation of consoles

I don't think we fans of the series ever really got just how few of us played the games tbh. I'm pretty surprised we even got number two after what happened with the first and I think Sega were bitten way too hard to risk it again-prolly reminds many people there of killing them as a console maker too!

Not so sure that it would have to be as relatively expensive these days with sand boxes all the rage as surely there has to be some shortcuts they might use?Otherwise, given the cost of Shenmue2 games as vast as GTA4 would be amazingly prohibitive costs wise, no?

Whatever, we don't look like even getting Yakuza3 in the west let alone Shenmue3 any time soon.

average games now cost between 10-20 million dollars, and gta4 development cost more than 100 million dollars, so sega must to make sure the project will make some profit.

Shenmue invested in completely new technology and had Graphics beyond anything in neighboring existence at the time.

Shenmue 3's technology however, would require a majority of technology already available and made main stream by developers professional and Independent alike.

The original however, featured voice sinking and a dynamic world in complete 3d, these features at the time, Were very mind blowing and new.

Shenmue 3 is more of a question of when then if.

gta 4 used a new technology (rage engine) and the game delayed multiple times and it cost rockstar games a lot of money.
yu suzuki is a perfectionist and he will not use a middle ware engine to power shenmue. would you buy shenmue if they make it using unreal engine 3?

LOL. Good point. However, I do not believe it would cost as much to produce a new Shenmue, still though.

While GTA4 did use a lot of new technology and money to be spent excessively, Shenmue 3 still shouldn't cost $70 million like it did at the time.

To be honest, Budget is all relative to the time distribution and Software Libraries licensed, team size. So If Suzukiさん keeps this in mind, it can all be done.

I doubt they could pull off much better than Uncharted2/Killzone2/MGS4/Last Guardian/GT5..I mean theres a trend where developers go to really exercise their technical talent. The engines are already in place, and Uncharted2 is open source. The networks are there to cut down on development costs.

3 choices:

1. They can go to Sony and get in their dev chain, make a phenomenal never before seen title.

2. They can go to Microsoft learn from Remedy how to make a sandbox....uh nev.. they can use a middleware engine.

3. Multiplatform UnrealEngine/mehengine something and just get sales.. but why bother.. just make a Wii Game and sell more than it would have at less cost.

I doubt shenmue would sell in a world of 150 dollar MW2 special edition bags.. maybe they could just make a movie?

Hands down it will sell? Sure but not enough to make any money. I mean you are talking about a console with a lower attach rate than Wii and the lowest software sales of ANY current system on the market. Their best bet is to stay far away from PS3.

But yes it would cost probably 150 million plus to make a worthy Shenmue3 on the PS3 , But PS3 needs about 1 GB of Vram to do justice to Shenmue and of course, The time it would take to make a Engine of this caliber would be 3-4 years!!! not good and PLUS Shenmue was Flippin Boring!!! I played it alot and had all the games the soundtrack the movie!!

It needs one thing to compete with Metal Gear and Halo,gears,Final Fantasy,& that was action!!! Some weapons training and a little stealth and THis game would of been an amazing EPIC Story! that Stole our lives away!,, but it turned out to be a boring romp but it was revolutionary in the Technology world and play mechanics world but did not have a fallowing cause it was BORING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yu Suzuki was a Panzi Race car lover.He didn't want weapons in this game But SEGA needs to put a team behind it to step it up to another level!!!!
Some Blood some Gore some Stealth missions some killing!!!Metal Gear or GTA,could never compete with Shenmue if this were the case!!!!

Dreamcast Shenmue is still a benchmark for graphics!!!The massive breathing detailed worlds were phenomenal On screen characters!!! Animation QTE,Interaction ,list goes on!!!!

I can sit here and rant about how on the PS3 with VF5 level graphics Shenmue could destroy Metal gear but why!!???never will happen!!!
Yu has retired Sega is no More!!!!!!

I guess you didn't read that the original cost was $70mil for development and that a next gen version would cost a lot more. So making it a PS3 exclusive would be very risky financially.

Looking at the depth and quality of MGS:PW's trailer that might be a decent idea-but with the perfectionist nature of the games history would "settling" for a handheld to finish the trilogy sit very well?

However, they could make an AMAZING PSP game for much less cash than they prolly could a full size PS3/360/Wii version and it would possibly be easier to make the game stand out in handheld company rather than on PS36Wii as well. I don't imagine many series fans would want it to be a DS or PSP game , though, after seeing the reaction to VC2 going to PSP!

I think Sega would love to finish the series as it's been a labour of love and despite what it caused it's still one of the most frequently begged for games anywhere- but right now I doubt we're much nearer to a situation where it will happen! Would a portable Shenmue 3 do it for anyone? If they go that way surely it would be wise to release 1 and 2 as PSP downloadables to build the fanbase for the game/series(be good in general to raise awareness of the games) if there's ever going to be that final effort, no?

Shenmue was on the same graphical level of games like Crysis when it was released. There was nothing like it at the time. It was groundbreaking both graphics as well as gameplaywise. The Yakuza 3 engine wouldn't cut it.

At least the PS3 is not holding it back in terms of quality. The 360 version would end up gimping the whole series because of it's technical limitations. They already had to cut the open world from Alan Wake.

I love how you guys defend each other... you guys still don't realize that you are living in the N4G world of fanboyism.

This is very simple PS3 own Japan and Xbox own America and Europe so why would sega release Shenmue 3 PS3 exclusive when they will loose alot of money by doing that its make no sense use the logic. If this game came out in the future it will be a 360 Exclusive since they don't want to loose money or a Wii exclusive because Wii is owning America, Japan, an Europe but it will not be a next gen game.

Yes it was true that Microsoft killed Shenmue 2 in the original xbox but that's my point on all this at that gen the PS2 was killing the original xbox and that's why shenmue 3 will came out on the 360 or the wii
