No "New Game Plus" in Mass Effect 2

TGB writes: "Sometimes called "new game plus." in Mass Effect you had the option to restart a character, with all of his attributes, weapons and perks, at the beginning of the game, but Mass Effect 2 won't have it."

That sucks for those who go for achievements that need a second play through e.g. me.

No Personal offense to Mass Effect,
but a game loses me when I have to create a character (As with Oblivion and fall out).
I want to play as a Well Designed Character.

I'll take Cloud Strife, please.

What do you mean? The default character is John Shepard whose very well detailed graphically (more so than any preset character) and then of course there are about a dozen preset characters you can choose from, and if you like change as well to your liking.

You don't HAVE to create a character. In fact, you have to go through a couple of menu options just to get to the area where you can create your own from scratch.

3.2 - yeah I didnt create a character
I just used Shepard since he looked more like me then the one I tried to make look like me.

For some reason when ever I try to create a normal looking chracter they end up looking deformed.

however Im pretty good at creating a weird looking chracter, but I like them to look bad azz.

maybe max payne 3 should have character creation so I dont have to hear people complian about playing as a fat bald guy.

3.3 - Still.
It feels some what lack luster.
I suppose Mass Effect isn't as bad considering the character actually plays a role in the game, unlike Oblivion and Fall out, and generic Western RPG X.

Have you actually played Mass Effect enough to judge the game?

@iamtehpwn: Maybe you just have a problem with Bethesda? That's how they design RPGs, as true create-a-role-and-fill-it role-playing. Besides the main plot, they expect YOU to create your own tale of heroics (or villainy). Old school stuff. It's a totally different style. It has nothing to do with quality. I could easily say I hate those glorified visual novels they call JRPGs and their cut-n-paste characters. But I happen to enjoy both genres.

Bioware is considered a lot less freeform in that regard. Their games are often more focused on story-driven content than traditional dungeon delving. The only things you can really change about Shepard are appearance, gender, skillset, and alignment. Beyond that, every choice you make afterwards relates to the story and your personal character development. That might not be your thing, but some people actually like to have choices that truly affect something in-game.

3.8 - I can't believe someone's even trying to defend it.
"they expect YOU to create your own tale of heroics (or villainy)."

Because, you know, as the developers of the game it's not their JOB to hire writers.

All the budget money goes to Hollywood actors to phone-in six lines of dialog.

Bethesda games may be "fun" but they are by no means "good." They're like Stardock--they make a bundle selling unfinished, slopped-together products.

I just hope that when you continue as Shepard you can go into Mass Effect 2 with all of your weapons, ammo, and armor from Mass Effect 1.

At the end of Mass Effect 1 I was a bad ass, I would love to build on that into Mass Effect 2.

BioWare have said you will be able to import certain things from your previous save, but not actual combat stats. That would just make ME2 pointless if you were already upgraded to a Level 60, wouldnt it?

They've said that you only bring over the decisions you made during the story line, such as the ending decisions.

That's a shame. That's one of the funnest options of a game, like if you get stuck on a tough situation the first time around, you can see how tough it is the 2nd time around with a beefed up character.

I'm sure they've worked out all the kinks behind this.

In Mass Effect 1 unlocking Insanity mode and not having a level 60 character to beat it with using New Game Plus it would have been damn near impossible.

So hopefully this Mass Effect will actually take Skill in combat and not just the 50second emptying of bullets towards a Krogan.

It's an RPG, it's not about skillz for killz, it's about lewt & xp.

@btc I personally think if you start a new game without importing a save the enemies are certain levels. If you import a save the enemies should scale with your level appropriately. Thats how I figured they would do it.

@edhe It might be an RPG but its a TPS also. skillz for killz and lewt and xp all rolled into one.

8 - well this makes sense
since your already starting the game with your character from mass effect 1. That is if you have a ME1 character. And after ME 2 you will use taht same character for ME3.

I think bioware's approach is the evolution of new game +. Instead of playing the same game over with your chracter, you go on to the next game with that character.

I have to play through it again to get a character ready for ME2. It would suck to start ME2 without a bad azz character.

___LOL at SAren. my shepard was a smooth talker and convinced saren to shoot himself, too bad he came back.

I don't like it. New Game+ makes games more fun to play because it's basically taking a demigod through the game and who here doesn't love stomping on just about everything? Also I find the dev's description hard to understand...but we'll see.

It seems like the reasoning indicates a transference of information from ME2 to ME3. Whether that's stats and equipment this time around or just story elements, I dunno. I would assume it's more the former since new game+ wasn't a problem connecting the player choices of ME to ME2.

My thing is, why not just force the user to save over a new slot for new game+ and make it ineligible for use in ME3? A new game+ is a quick, easy fix for replay value and I hate to see it go.

Imo, its a good idea. BioWare is just trying to balance the game out for the players. Just imagine how easy the game would be if I were to port my Lvl 60 Vanguard with all my powers and spectre gear. Mass Effect 2 is going to be awesome no matter what and I cant wait to meet that new character, Thane.

As long as BioWare takes their time with Mass Effect 2 and fixes all the issues ME1 had, im happy.

That sucks, I enjoyed that feature a lot in ME1.

Oh btw, I love the fact that they aren't even trying to hide ME3's existence lol. Hopefully they're already doing some early developing!

that's fine i guess, i like a game when it's challenging. i hope they do something with how krogan battlemasters come at you and just melee you to death, that REALLY irks me. they're like magnets when they come at you like that, and you can't really defend against it. especially on higher difficulty settings.

well, you could also just install a better armor upgrade too. lol.

i forget what its called but you could basically istall a "charge" upgrade to your own armour and take the fight to the krogans!

of course that would get you killed pretty quick by their gun toting side kicks but the idea is nice =P

yeah there's a few solutions.

but in particular i'm on hardcore with a brand new file and i keep getting killed by the krogan dude on the liara mission. i finally worked out a good strategy, but i'm just so weak compared to the ai. everything works out until mister krogan starts the melee sh*t. wipes me out in like 5 seconds. i have shield batteries, better armor, and my shepard has the infiltrator special class, so she's good with sniper riffles. of course that's not doing me any good against a melee attack.

anyway, no biggie. i have a file where i can beat the snot out of anything that moves or crawls anyway, lol.

here's to mass effect 2!

New Game Plus adds a lot of replay value to RPG games. I don't think it was a good idea to not include it in this one.
