No More Heroes Revisited

Jeffrey Matulef writes:

"The world Travis Touchdown inhabits is an interesting one as it reflects both our own world and the world of videogame conventions (as opposed to something like GTAIV, which tries to mirror our world, but in my opinion, ungracefully shoehorns it into videogame conventions). The nods to other games and pop culture in general are anything but subtle with it's jaggy, pixelated aesthetic, 8-bit leaderboards, and goofy, nonsensical villains. The game is unapologetically "gamey." Giving you the illusion of an open world with nothing to do between missions only serves to reinforce the notion that games like GTAIV's open world are just an illusion; a window dressing laid upon otherwise conventional game design. By embracing its gaming roots, it allows Suda 51 to go hog-wild with his goofy ideas as it's not likely to break the immersion."

I'm really not a fan of this game when it comes to looking for something enjoyable to play, but I really should try again to get through more of it; Suda's got a really interesting mind.

I had a lot more fun re-watching all of the cutscenes on YouTube than I did actually playing the game.

Interesting as I found the cutscenes less charming than the actual stuff that happens in the game. Though there are major pacing/grinding issues if you're not playing on a file that's already beaten the game, so I can get where you're coming from if that's what you're referring to.

Maybe I'll just try the cutscene thing... haha.

Interesting article, I always wondered what the main character was like. The question is, is he a parody of frat-boy mentalities, or a protagonist we are encouraged to empathise with?

I couldn't empathize with him at all during the time I played the game. He was just kindof a loser to me, but that doesn't mean the character couldn't evolve.

This is one of the smartest, most introspective analyses of a video game that I've read. The author really works hard to reveal a lot of the themes and pathologies hidden below the surface of this game.

Great job. I'll be sure to read his next article.

5 - GTA clone its not, GTA spoof it is.
If Suda 51 was assembling an army of gamers, I'd be the first to recruit.
