The Top Five Best Launch Titles Of All Time

"A launch title can't really break a console (Or, maybe it can, see Luigi's Mansion) but it certainly can make one, and to celebrate my love for judging a system entirely on the first games that come out for it, here are my top five favorite launch titles of all time."

I would have put Halo: Combat Evolved on that list. I'm not a fan of the CURRENT state of the franchise, but back in the day that was THE FPS to be playing on consoles...and the fact that it was a launch title gave you quite a compelling reason to go out and buy an Xbox right away.

I'd agree. It's also the first franchise that comes to mind when people think of Xbox/Xbox 360.

Halo should of made the list. It made Xbox what it is today.

Author fails at research, Sonic the hedghog and super mario brothers where not even launch titles. Halo was, and does deserve a spot in this kind of list.

I swear, sometimes I wonder if people that write these so called videogame arcticles actually know their stuff.

Agreed! Halo all the way should have been added. And wii sports is really not that great of a launch title. I mean sure it was decent, but after the novelty wore off.... I would have put Twilight Princess in its place for sure! Author needs to do more research. These are probably his favorite games for each console.

I was JUST about to put the same thing. Soul Calibur was an amazing launch title that easily trumps Battle Arena Toshinden (btw, I think Ridge Racer was a better launch title for the PSOne). Back to the subject, to this day, Soul Calibur really set the bar for fighting games. I mean, go on YouTube and look at gameplay vids...did you see them? funny how a game that's TEN YEARS OLD looks so great still right? EGM (RIP) said it best: Try to find a flaw. Go on, try it." I played that game non-stop and I wasn't able to. I'll never forget 9.9.99 (Dreamcast launch) when my jaw dropped to the floor when I realized how amazing the future of gaming would be.

Sonic on Genesis wasn't the launch title.

it came out in like 1991.

Exactly. Sonic was the second pack in title for the Genesis. The first was Altered Beast, which WAS a launch title.

that is correct. and no 'launch-window' talk either... Sonic didn't show up on the Genesis until 2 years after the system came out.

In terms of the consoles I have owned:

Atari: I dont remember
NES: Super Mario Bros
SNES: Super Mario World
Playstation: Battle Arena Toshinden (glad to see this game get noticed on the list, it brings back great memories)
N64: Mario 64 (3D Bowser FTW!)
Playstation 2: I really don't remember the big launch titles (maybe Madden?)
Gamecube: I dont remember the biggies there either
Wii: Wii Sports
360 and PS3: I feel like both of these systems took some time before their big guns started coming out, none of their launch titles blew my mind, I think because this gen has probably been so hard/expensive to develop for

So, can anyone remember any gamecube launch titles that really set the standard for the next gen at the time?

The big one for the Gamecube was Rogue Squadron.

9 - Where is Halo?
That is the game that forever associated the Xbox with skinny pale nerds, and I guess did kind of change the way we think about FPS games :D

Needs more Soul Calibur. What's up with Battle Arena Toshinden? Soul Calibur definitely deserves a spot on this list more than that game.

LMAO, Sonic didn't come out until like 2-3 years after the Genesis launched.

And Battle Arena Toshiden wasn't a launch title in Japan. Obviously regions determine launch titles. So it depends on the game and when and where the system was sold.

Unfortunately, "launch" title isn't absolute.
