Mistwalker Studios Unfairly Overlooked

Andrew Weymes of The Nightly Gamer writes: "The attention that Mistwalker Studios has garnered has lead to some very mixed results. When they first formed, expectations were very high because of the names involved such as Hironobu Sakaguchi, Kensuke Tanaka and Nobu Uematsu who was a composer of some well known music from the Final Fantasy series."

1 - Losy Odyssey was brilliant.
I think that I unlocked every achievement for that game. Usually once I'm done, that's it, I don't go back for the sake of being a completionist.

LO took everything "classic" about JRPGs and made it bigger, badder and more epic in scope. It didn't redefine, it refined.

Pretty much this and Valkyria are the only JRPGs that I've enjoyed this gen. (VC is a SJRPG technically, but still beautifully realized.)

I'm eager to see what Mistwalker's next project is. Wasn't there a story about him working on something "new" not too long ago?

There was a game called "Cry On" being developed by Mistwalker for the Xbox 360 but it was cancelled, sadly. Hopefully, they are working on something else for the 360.

I'm one of the few people that loved Blue Dragon. Lost Odyssey was certainly a better game, but I'm a sucker for anime so Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey are even for me.

I'm perfectly fine with Mistwalkers style of keeping the classic gameplay and story telling of JRPGs of old, but adding incredible visuals.

I hope they develop a sequel for LO...my only gripe about the game was that it didn't have any summoning...but then I guess it would look too much like FF.

I agree. Lost Odyssey is the best turn based rpg of the generation and one of the best games period.

Wow, this is like a little Mistwalker love fest. I love it.

Lost Odyssey was a great game. I liked how the story wasn't entirely traditional and had some decent twists. Overall, I think both Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey are very underrated. It's too late for me to review them now, though. Perhaps a retro review in a couple of years. lol

I'm on DVD3 and loving it too :). I really hope they work on LO2 and not Blue Dragon 2, because I don't like anime

I only got Lost Odyssey last year because Gamersyde posted a video of the first 20 minutes and i really liked what i saw.Well after 4 months and 83 hours of gameplay, i had no choice but to declare Lost Odyssey to be one of the best 5 games i had played on the 360.This from someone who doe not play JRPG's at all.

My purchase of Lost Odyssey just reaffirmed my decision to never listen to reviews and simply buy what ever game the concept appeals to you.How that game could land a 78 on metacritic is beyond explanation.

If their previous work is any indication of what is to come, I am assuming it will be a traditional JRPG with great graphics and a couple of large breasted female party members.

The woman in Blue dragon where kind of flat chested tho :P
I like how Mistwalker put up games in both the fashion of Final fantasy, and Dragon quest, but its also time for them now to create something new.

They can do it.

Lost Odyssey is one of the best RPG's this gen, its slow paced in the beginning, but picks up after a while and keeps getting better and better.

I got all but 1 achievement and that is Treasure Trove, that is a pain in the ass to get on your first run, but when I go on my second run I will get it, also I need to download the DLC still, but since I am on Blue Dragon I will go to LO afterwards.

6 - Re: Breasts
Yeah, on one hand, I was impressed at the level of detail - veins, freckles - present in Queen Ming's...er... meatbags.

On the other hand... well, this is really a "one handed" argument, who am I kidding? :)

8 - Damn straight! Mistwalker caters to the old-school RPG gamers!
I don't like real-time RPG games. While I did accept Kingdom Hearts, I didn't like FF12 and if FF13 is going to have similar play style then count me out. I like the turn-based system because it's more relaxing. Both modes are very tactical and require just as much strategy but I prefer to be relaxed while playing, not tense.

However I am split between random battles and on-screen enemies. It all depends on how it's executed. I found LO's random battles "tolerable".

8.1 - I have said te same about Real-Time Based rpg's but Star Ocean 4 is proving me wrong...
I'm from the old-school of Jrpgs, obviously. Some of the BEST Jrpgs are Turn-Based. Just something about controlling every character, watching them develop, while being able to see your hard work pay off fighting enemies, individually.

I always thought Real-time JRPG's reminds me too much of an MMO with RPG elements. Lots of button smashing with a magic button here and there. Switching to different characters while there is so much happening on the screen at once, you miss the beauty of Magic castings....etc

Lost Odyssey was actually challenging, since you could not grind like some old games. Kept me on my toes and kept me moving along. I spent over 99+ hours on that game. It's usually a good sign when I spend lots of hours on a jrpg.

I oppose "Enemies on the screen". I always thought it looks kinda stupid having huge "Goats" or "Frogs" walking around aimlessly. I miss the random battles and not knowing what lurks in certain areas is actually suspenseful.

Star Ocean 4's battle system is actually fun and it's real-time.

Definitely. SO3-4 is a game that does real-time battles correctly. I can't believe I forgot about them. I carved a month into that game and 10 days on Sphere 211 alone.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope does real time battles properly in my opinion. Other games in the genre such as Eternal Sonata and Tales of Vesperia are great, but their combat system offers very little challenge.

I have yet to play Lost Odyssey, but I did play Blue Dragon, and quite frankly that game didn't appeal to me. I couldn't grow attached to the characters and the story was just a little too serious for how cartoony everything looked. The battle system was dull, to be blunt, and the enemies weren't very interesting. Lost Odyssey is probably a better game, but there are many other games that have kept me putting that one off.

The only RPG in history that let's you play through an entire funeral.
Lost Odyssey absorbed my life when it was released and is one of my all-time fave RPGs. I'm definately crossing my fingers that we get the sequel announcement at this year's E3.

12 - Lost Odyssey best Turn-Based Jrpg this gen...brought me back to the Pre Final Fantasy 12/X2 days
Great Music/Story presentations as well.....

It was sad to see that game Cry-On get canceled....Oh well, I just know Hironobu Sakaguchi, Kensuke Tanaka and Nobuo Uematsu is working on something Big.

I read this from the site:

"We're doing research & development from a prototype that I haven't worked on since FF7. We're finished with that for now. There were a lot of trials and errors, and it took longer than expected, but it was an unexpectedly good challenge"

LO is probably the top JRPG games so far. U can relate to the character more than other fantasy games because they seem more like well..us (except they can't die). Kaim is probably my most favorite character so far. His 1k dreams sequences are what made this game. I actually like reading those better than long CGI. It is quite sad that this game has been under the radar still. I don't see anyone who has love JRPG wouldn't like LO. Best game so far.

I think other games in the genre are as good or better than Lost Odyssey this generation, but it was an excellent turn based RPG nonetheless.

I loved the boss designs and the classic turn based combat system.
