Retro Reborn: First Impressions of Quake Live

As many others are reporting, Quake Live will go from invite-only to Open Beta on February 24. A new generation of gamers will be introduced to the id classic that helped define competitive gaming as serious business. Unlike your average arena shooter, the Quake games are famous for being especially fast and frenzied. The pace of game play is enveloping, almost hypnotic, and it's what drew loyal players of the old school into the world of Quake years ago. The author's roommate happens to be one of them.

Still proud of the stocked computer he won fragging the life out of competitors in a '04 PC CLUB tournament, 'XBN chino' has been anticipating Live for some time. Recently, he took some time to share his initial impressions with the author.

The community's a lot friendlier than CounterStrike's, so it shouldn't be too off-putting for newbies to get in.

I'm just glad the CS krew hasn't invaded yet. I wanna have fun, no deal with a clan or have to search for private servers to have a good time.

from what i've heard, it has a great match making system, so newbies and less skilled players will all have fun together while the elite will battle against other gamers of similar levels. As far as I'm concerned this is the very best way to do online gaming.

It's not fun for a noob to log on and be cannon fodder over and over, likewise its no challenge for a 'pro' to gun down endless waves of noobs, get the right people into the right games. The Halo series does an amazing job of this.
