GameSpot: Xbox 360 Vs. PlayStation 3 Graphics Comparison: Now With PC!

GameSpot writes:

"Back in 2006 (when the current generation of consoles was still called the next generation) we did our first Xbox 360 vs. PlayStation 3 graphics comparison. Since then we've released rounds 2, 3, and 4, but we hadn't touched the third rail--the PC--until now. The graphics comparison features started out as a way to examine which console had better graphics, but readers began asking us to include PC image comparisons for games available on all three platforms. We focused on more recent games for our current comparison, because those are the games people are still buying and playing. You'll likely recognize many of the shots from our previous graphics comparisons. The results aren't terribly surprising, but the differences are still interesting to see. A well-equipped PC beats both consoles easily--of course, that same PC also costs three to four times more than either of the consoles."

I think the second to last screenshot looks better on 360, and the last screen shot looks better on PS3(EDIT: eh, now that I look at it, the PS3 version is just bolder in the background, nevermind). That's just me.

1.1 - do a graphics comparison of exclusive games
where each console is utilised to the best of their abilities, whats the point in doing multiplat games?

That wouldn't work, you can't compare completely different games because the whole thing is subjective. Imagine comparing something like Gears of War to Uncharted - sure, they're kinda similar gameplay-wise, but Uncharted is set mainly in forested areas, whereas GoW is set in Urban areas. Both games will have been designed with this in mind and thus the engine optimised for such things.
Even FPS games will be designed in near-entirely different ways from each other - Fallout 3 was designed for large, sprawling landscapes, but Halo 3 was designed for somewhat large, but smaller overall "Chunks" of level (if that makes sense).

The comparisons are pointless anyway, the difference in the level of detail between the two consoles is so minuscule that it makes no difference to the gameplay at all. It's never going to be a deciding factor over which console is best or which console joe public is going to buy, for that we need to look at the exclusive games and extra features each provides. Graphical comparisons reveal nothing.

1.5 - no one want to do console exclusives comparison because
they know that ps3 exclusives is on a different level and will make 360 exclusives looks cheap, thats why they dont do it! i mean which 360 exclusive even looks close to MGS4?? or uncharted? killzone 2? did u guys see uncharted 2?? heavily rain?? do u think any 360 exclusive will even come near them in graphics??

the answer is big NO! so they want to take an easy way to make the 360 games looks better or on par with ps3 game by comparing multiplat games!!

I had both 360 and PS3 versions of this game to decide which to play over xmas.

Aliasing on the 360 is way better, a lot less jaggies than the PS3 version. This seems to depend on the time of day but its really not a big deal as the game still looks fantastic...... The 360 has a lot of screen tearing in high detail areas.. like when walking round Megaton or in a large battle with a lot of detail.

In the end last weeks trophy patch sealed the deal for me and I went with the PS3 version.

I think character models textures were slightly higher on geow2 than mgs4, but MGS4's looked much more seamless. I caught many a time, plates on the shoulder plates clipping into the walls, arms legs on geow2.

Anyway, my chief gripe with your argument is that you know (as I know if you played with mgs4) that everything in MGS4 from faraway up to magnifying glass range was readable and sharp (if not super high quality texture). Geow2 had a huge vaseline effects from 300+ feet away. It doesn't even have upclose textures. Did you try reading the bulletin board in the hospital? Completely unreadable. Take some time and look around Naomi's ramshackle clinic in MGS4. Did you notice how empty it was with NPCs running around anywhere compared to MGS4's marketplace in the 1st chapter?

Did you notice how MGS4 cars sitting in the 1st act actually have real suspensions that rattle when explosions occur? Geow2's empty hulks dont' even explode or flip when a grenade is tossed nearby.

There is no comparison between the two titles. Geow2 felt rushed even compared to the first game. MGS4 is a far more polished title with far more going on onscreen, better CG, better rail sequences (brumak vs. Metal gear ride) (drill rig vs. MGS4 motorbike rail OR MGS4 on Drebin's armored vehicle). More interesting weapons array, more approaches to objectives, more unique texture assets(50Gb does add up). Geow2 still looks like a skeleton world to me. Boxes boxes, empty stalls, only bunks no kitchens, no maintenance rooms, just empty corridors with occasional rooms filled with repeating junk. Notice how locusts just walk around. They don't take pisses, they don't lounge, etc. They just wait around until you show up to pop you.

No, some of you just don't get it - you cannot compare two different games on two different platforms, it just doesn't work. Even if they're the same genre, the whole design of the game may be completely different. Lets take an example: Bioshock Versus Resistance: FOM. Bioshock is INSIDE the whole time, FOM goes outside AND inside - the engines have to be designed to cope with this and thus various compromises are made here and there, regarding things like clipping and object occlusion.

Or, if you don't get that, try thinking back to when you were a young boy at school - ever do a thing called "Fair testing"? Well let me refresh your memory - fair testing is the concept where you test something by changing just ONE variable. So in a lab, that one variable might be a substance that's added to a chemical - the lab equipment, the conditions, etc. are always the same, otherwise you can't prove that the substance being added to the chemical is what's causing the change. The same logic applies here, to really tell which console is superior, you can't compare one game to another, you have to compare the SAME game or you'll have changed too many variables and thus the comparison is void.

You guys wanting to compare console exclusives are forgetting one thing. The PS3 both came out a year later and is more expensive than the 360. If it didn't have better graphical capabilities, that would be pretty sad.

Besides, I'm sick of these stupid graphics comparisons. Games are about FUN. People always seem to forget that.

I just put GTA IV and World at War in my PS3 because I did not think that they looked as bad as the PS3 screen shots in the article. And they don't. Now I don't know where Gamespot gets these shot from but I have to say that the images on my LCD at the house look more like the PC shots they used than any.

Are these source shots? Do they not adjust the system settings? Or did they adjust the game visual settings? I don't know. I am just saying the games look better then the shots at my house?

I wasn't one of the ones who disagreed, but I know the PS3 version of GTA tends to look darker and has a blue tint. I even changed the settings on my Samsung 42in, with the same results. I prefer playing GTAIV on the PS3 because of the controller, but I also purchased the 360 version for DLC and achievements.

The difference is so minimal I don't see why anyone would care. If you're really that big a graphics whore that you can see any major differences, than you should obviously get it on the PC. Really people are just looking for anyway to call the PS3 sh!t, when they are perfectly okay taking a hit to graphics to play it on their 360's. Hypocrites much?

They look almost identical and play fine. I don't see why people have to keep arguing about minor differences. Like I said before, if you really care you own a $1000 computer that can do all the graphics at max.

Personally I purchased the PS3 for all the exclusives (we can get into how PS3 exclusives look better if you really want to). I can play games like this on my PC if I really cared that much about the graphics quality of multi-platform games.

Also, I don't see why this darkness problem that seems to be plaguing all the PS3 screenshots can't be fixed by adjusting your TV. None of my games have ever been that dark.

@read disc error- you're $200 machine can't play all of the games I want and needs a bunch of extra's to do the same things (wifi, rechargeable controllers, hard drive, $50 a year, etc). I know why I purchased my PS3. If you wanted a machine that could render better graphics for multiplatform games, why do you even own a 360? You could have used that $200 (which is obviously less than you actually payed, even for just the console at the time you purchased it) to a computer that can give you the better graphics. Hell, you could even buy a 360 controller for it.

Having both PS3 and 360 version, i can say that PS3 version is awful, full of aliasing and clipping, but better texture if you approache. 360 has aliasing too but less, with deeper shadows and sometimes some framerate issues, but nothing scary.

And of course, Fallout 3 is the best on PC, if you can pay yourself a good PC.

6 - Okay, Fallout 3 isn't exactly the best game to be comparing
Anyone who is serious about this stuff already has it on PC or XBOX 360. Everyone knows the PS3 version was pretty much an afterthought on the part of the development team, because of how much money they were receiving from Microsoft for exclusive content.

At least it looks as though they have RGB full turned on...

@ iistuii

Before you get all negative, learn to comprehend what I am saying. Most comparison videos (read: Gametrailers) don't use the full HDMI color spectrum that RGB full provides, thus making the PS3 versions of games ALWAYS washed out and lacking in color. This does not appear to be the case with these Gamespot comparison images. Also, the PS3 version of Fallout 3 is the buggiest console version, and is also the one with the most graphical issues when compared to the 360 and PC versions. It is also the last to recieve "achievements" (PS3 Trophies), and has had them patched way over a month after the game has been out.

7 - Here we go again
Just as in all multiformats, the 360 and ps3 will be near on identical, however the ps3 suffers from hardly any or no AA, thats true, dunno why, it's just annoying. Th pc if it's a proper gaming pc will make the consoles look a jaggie mess, when they turn everything up on highest settings with AA on etc.
Shut this user up Let user speak
thor - 370 days 7 hours ago
7.1 -
It's more expensive to do AA on PS3, so most games use just 2x or Quincunx. Quincunx has the unfortunate side-effect of making the image look a little blurred but it gives the impression of greater AA level. This isn't to say the PS3 can't do AA, however, as games like Warhawk (4xAA) demonstrate. Killzone 2 also has very little aliasing.

You'll see games looking the same because they use the same assets (character models, environments, textures etc.) so the only major differences will be in framerate, anti-aliasing and post-processing. This is where the PS3 version falls down unfortunately.
Shut this user up Let user speak

7.2 - Bubbles for you, Thor
Thank you for explaining things for those who are unsure about this stuff.

edit: found this online.

"Quincunxes are used in modern computer graphics as a supersampling pattern for anti-aliasing. Quincunx antialiasing samples scenes at the corners and centers of each pixel. These five sample points, in the shape of a quincunx, are combined to produce each displayed pixel. However, samples at the corner points are shared with adjacent pixels, so the number of samples needed is only twice the number of displayed pixels."

http://www.nvnews.net/previ...

Hence the "2x" multisampling (anti-aliasing).

10.1 - I had seen those pictures before.
I remember seeing the close up comparison of models and textures for the 360 and PS3 version of Fallout 3 and the PS3 version was the clear winner. You'd have to be blind not to see it. These far away shots reminded me, didn't someone complain about the draw distance of the PS3 for this game, because I don't see a problem in these comparisons. Other than that, I thought the PS3 version looked better, more realistic. If you look at the textures on the ground and rocks their shadows are far more subtle. At any rate, people claiming Fallout 3 is gimped on the PS3 need to actually play the game or check out the reviews. IGN thought it was worth 9.4 on the PS3. That doesn't sound very gimped to me.

Reminds me of the Orange Box. I played through all 3 episodes on my PS3 and that game was freaking awesome. You'd think it was unplayable the way 360 fanboys were bashing it on the forums - crowing about the 360 version. Personally, the 360 version could look twice as good and I'd still play it on my PS3 over the 360. After 4 360 consoles I learned that if you buy the bulk of your games on a console you can't rely on, what's the point. I'll never buy another MS console again.

12.2 - Gamespot sucks ass.
It may have something to do with their parent company having exclusive deals with MS, but after almost of decade of using Gamespot I finally abandoned them. The pro 360, take a shot at Sony every chance you get had got so bad it was like a slap every time you read their news. Have a look now. There's an article about Fable II's downloadable content that makes you go away feeling like the 360's the best console in the world. Sure the DLC is delayed again, but let's crow about much software we've sold, NPD numbers, the size of the fan base, how MS's apologized for this, the contest they're running.

By contrast look at their article on Home's Beta. It's a tiny article. They focus on voice chat being taken away temporarily. They put temporarily in quotation marks, to imply that they're lying. They use language like "blame" and "evicted", highlight "lingering issues". It's the freaking beta. That's the point, to iron out the issues.

And it's been like this for at least 2 years now. I thought it was just me, but the bias in their news reporting become more and more blatant as time went on to the point where I now don't consider them a credible site in any way, shape or form. It's sad. They used to be great. Now reviewers get fired over pressure from advertisers. WTF?

If they are such 360 fanboys then why is Gears 2 not on the Game of the Year poll? No More Heroes is!!! I mean come on!! Oh yeah, and they gave MGS4 a 10, remember? I'm not a fan of MGS, I'd rather just play Splinter Cell, but I must admit that game is damn near perfection.

darkride66 - 369 days 15 hours ago
12.4 - Well, that question is easy to answer.
Gears isn't on their game of the year poll because Gears 2, while good, isn't close to being game of the year.

And if they hadn't given MGS4 a perfect score they would have shown their hand to the entire world, that they're truly biased against the PS3 for some reason. Just look at their articles. Compare any two news articles about MS and Sony and check out their word choices. You'll see what I mean. It's been going on for 2 years now with them, and knowing that their parent company has exclusive deals with MS to show their content exclusively on XBL, does it really surprise you that they have a pro-Microsoft/anti-Sony slant? Just follow the money.
