Final Fantasy XIV To Follow Dragon Quest's Lead?

Incase you are unaware, Dragon Quest X was announced for the Nintendo Wii earlier this week at a Dragon Quest press conference. Although Dragon Quest IX being on the Nintendo DS caused a bigger stir, this is still quite a statement of intent for Square Enix. Will they make the same statement with the next main Final Fantasy game?

I wouldn't be surprised if this were to happen. Similarly, I wouldn't be surprised if Sony or MS for their "next-gen" console, tires to go after the casual crowd and thus dumb down their product and hide that fact with some seemingly innovative gimmick and in so doing, fool the masses.

Hey it's what works, right? In the end the ones who suffer the most are the ones who have always played and supported these game companies, and it's sad really...

Well even if the next gen consoles wont be a big step forward in graphics its not like they are going to dumb it down... I mean it will be HD graphics and it will be atleast mildly pleasing to look at, unlike the Wii which pukes out bad quality 480p image.

point taken but you also have to realize that a couple years from now the graphics that we deem amazing today will simply be average come next gen.

What I'm trying to say is this: if Sony and MS go the route that Nintendo has taken don't expect to see the Uncharteds, the Killzone 2s and the Gears of Wars that we have come to know and love in the next generation of console gaming.

1.5 - I'm pretty sure that this is what will happen.

Especially with Sony, they'll probably do something similar to what they did with the PS2. Have a console that doesn't have the very best hardware but focus on the software library instead. It will have better graphics than the PS3 but I wouldn't expect a massive jump.

I'm not so sure that Square Enix is willing to ditch their Crystal Tools engine, which they spent a lot of time and money to develop specifically for HD Final Fantasy games, in favor of the Wii. It just seems counterproductive. However, I do think that the Wii will get its own spin-off of the main FF series.

Doubt it would ever happen. The 360 and PS3 are plenty capable of carrying FF sales. It makes sense for DQ games because they don't really try to push system spec, and the wii dominates Japan.

yes. but it takes more work to make the engine fitting for PS3 and 360, so even if the engine can do games for wii doesnt really matter. They have spent time and money to make an engine for PS3 and 360, thats the point. Besides by the time FF14 comes out, i promise you both PS3 and 360 will have a solid install base. And i think they will get more sales on those platforms then on the Wii.

Crystal Tools (formerly White Engine) was always meant to be compatible with PS3, 360, Wii and PC. So I don't really get what you're saying. They wouldn't be spending any extra time and money developing a game for the Wii, as it would be using the same engine.

Not a chance in hell ... lets speak frankly , final fantasy main if not only current appeal , ever since ff7 appeared are graphics and realisation . Dont get me wrong 7 is great , and once everywhile a good game pops up in the serie , however what sells the package is it's realisation .

Hardcore rpg fans will pick more obscure titles if they care so much about gameplay or story AND still pick the always gorgeous FF game ...

After DQX it wouldn't be a big surprise at the time ff13 will be shipped,the install base of wii will probably be equal or more than the install base of ps3 and Xbox combined.
It's already the case in Japan where FF sell the most.

when FF14 actually comes out. We won't be seeing FF13 until 2010. We might see 14 around 2012, but I doubt that. I don't see how the wii will still be around by then.

LEt's be honest here, while their games have impressed many, every game it self had some gameplay changes that were still possible on a GBA/DS if they used the same grind system.
(of course the space required for game length and FMV are a different story).

To be honest the only major changes i ever saw were:
Nes>SNES(ending with 6 as the best looking on the snes)
SNES>PSX(from 2d to 3d, making use of FMV)
PSX>PS3(FF7 and up didn't do much except them having a different grind system, and i take FF13 is gonna do something special too)

But hey thats how i see it, 99% chance im getting FF13 (and 14 even if it is going to be on the Wii) anyway.

Because lets be honest here. The "hardcore genre" all ways included rpgs and Nintendo has all of the best rpgs available currently and hs some of the best fighters as well. If the HD consoles werent too overfocused on FPS and weak PC games, then the jrpgs on those consoles would do alot better. FFXIV would sale buttloads of copies on the Wii. Since it has sold more games then any other homw console this gen.

Lets face it. Nintendo was won this gen, Ms is second and Sony is 3rd.
its over and now can we bet on next gen yet??

Kinda pointless article here. The main Final Fantasy series has always tried to push everything to the limit in terms of Tech and storyline and it's safe to say they would not be able to do that on the Wii. I highly doubt there will be a main franchise Final Fantasy game on the Wii.

The name. I couldn't get over the name how is it Final. They should change the name.

I loved FF7 because of Sephiroth, Yuffie, and Cloud.
FF10 I liked, but I only played because the gray hair chick looked like a Sephiroth decendant.
FF10-2 The Gray haired chick again.

I'm a huge JRPG fan but FF was never my thing, however SE would be fools not to go to Wii with FF14 or KH3. Japan loves Wii. Japan loves FF and KH. They go together like pancakes and syrup, Peanutbutter and jelly, Man and Woman. Its a no brainer.

Its possible that Final Fantasy XIV will come to Wii.The 360 has not met sales expectations for SE games.The Wii will be the catalyst of the new FF games from now on.As for the PS3 I doubt even two FF games will make that much of a difference

ive said it all along if se was serious about this whole bigger install base, they wouldnt have been putting games on xbox it would be on wii. The xbox 360 rpgs were payed for by MS and thats fine but SE dug a hole I mean I rather have next gen grahpic rpgs but wii makes more sense for them atm.

Mainline FF games will never show up on a console with lesser capabilities. So FFXIV will likely be PS360, and a spin-off version will land on the Wii. Nobody has the kind of market saturation that the PS2 still has, DQVIII didn't do that well in the west on PS2, and nothing will ever change that, not even if it was on the Wii.
