"Gran Turismo in 4 times the resolution of Full HD

Polyphony Digital also presented two technological trials for the next generation at this event. Both of the presentations, were founded on the philosophy of "achieving the highest possible quality" held over the years by Gran Turismo.

One of these, was a time trial competition using Sony's newest digital cinema projector, the "SRX-S110". Gran Turismo 5 prologue is already in Full HD resolution at 1920 x 1080 pixels, providing the highest resolution possible in today's TV content. However in this time trial, the Full HD image was increased to twice the resolution both vertically and horizontally (4x the surface area), enabling game play at an ultra high resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. This was performed by connecting and synchronizing four Playstation 3's outputting a quarter of the image each at 1920x1080 pixels, but you must remember this demands an extremely high quality image from the source that can withstand the ultra high resolution. It can be said that this demonstration was only made possible, because the source image was Gran Turismo......"

Imagine what Polyphony Digital will do when PS4 comes out. I hope GT5 will blow my mind with realness. GT5P is already awesome, although their online play definitely needs work.

I'm a bit confused. So each PS3 is doing it's quarter of a screen right? So I can totally understand the 4x 1080p resolution. However, since each is only doing work on their own PART of the screen, then the 60 frames per second can't be added up.

What I'm basically trying to say is. If you put have 4 artists drawing a picture, each doing their quarter of the drawing but at the same speed. Then the picture (although 4x bigger) will still be drawed at the same speed. It doesn't get 4 times faster to finish drawing the picture.

Anyway it's still pretty sick and we won't probably be able to tell the difference as the human eye can only see so much at a certain rate anyway.

I think you're off on your analogy. But i do get what you're trying to say. The reason i think it's off is because if you do have 4 artists painting a quarter of a painting, simultaneously, then it will be done quicker. Because if it takes them each 15mins to do their quarter and they start at the same time they'll be done with the painting in 15mins.

Anyway, it does look awesome.

1.12 - from the article
"The other display was a playable demonstration on a Nano-Spindt FED / Field Emissions Display developed by Sony, with a frame rate of 240fps (240 frames per second).

Gran Turismo 5 Prologue has already achieved a frame rate of 60p (progressive), but in this demo, Gran Turismo was made playable at four times this frame rate at 240fps.

The SXRD demonstration described above used four PS3’s to improve image quality, but this used the same to increase the frame rate.

The display used in this demonstration was the 19 inch nano-Spindt FED screen produced by FE Technologies, who is a company that has taken over the development of the FED technology that was being developed at Sony. This display contains over 10,000 electron sources called the nano-spindt emitter, per pixcel. A fluorescent substance is exposed to the electrons from the emitters to produce light, and this format is very close to a cathode-ray tube in principle. The resulting view angle is wider in comparison to a LCD panel, and it shows superior performance when displaying moving images, with no blurring of the outline."

Yea my analogy was kinda off. But even though I didn't write it, I really meant that if 4 artists were to draw a picture 4x as big. It would not go any faster than 1 artist drawing the "original" size of the picture.

Anyway, all I'm getting at. Is that yea I can see 240 frames of 1080p picture per second and 60 frames of 4x1080p per second. I can not see how it's 240 frames of 4x1080p though. And I do not see how FED displays may be able to speed things up. I mean displays are just used to display the picture no? I'm nowhere close to a tech geek so that might be the reason why it just doesn't make much sense to me. I guess it's possible though.

Anyway even with 60fps it's still awesome.

I think they are confused if one PS3 can do 1080p@60fps then 2160p@240fps would need 16xPS3. Either they are adding up the 60fps from each PS3, or they are confusing the refresh rate of the display with the fps.

240Hz does not equal 240fps.

I understand that processors can always be upgraded, but currently, the CELL is the most powerful one out there. A modified CELL chip was in the top supercomputer that broke one petaflop.

uh, the fastest cell super computer is on position 449 in the top 500 super computers.

Everything above that (pos 448 to 1) does not feature cell computers, you have been misinformed.

Besides, the I7 alone, makes minchmeat out of the cell.

Consider this.

The PS3 was supposed to have no GPU and 4 Cell processors, but costs eliminated that.

The PS4 needs to have 4 Cell Processors 4GB of RAM (1GB per processor) and a x12 Blu-ray drive.

Epic.

Yeah, but we're talking in 2 or 3 years time. 2GB+ RAM is standard in just about every PC and a Cell processor is currently less than $60.

With constant cost and size reductions, it's not outside the realms of possibility. Hasn't there been rumours that the PS4 would use a Cell based architecture so developers could hit the ground running with programming for it?

I'd say they'd avoid a massively expensive console, though.

They didn't spend billions making Cell just one one generation of console. If you think that, you're just as shortsighted as M$.

And we all know Cells are made to hive, and work together. 4 Cells connected can to alot more than 4 working on their own,

By the time PS4 comes, Cell will be cheap, BR drives will be cheap and quicker, and RAM will be cheap. God, its a no brainer.

"I remember myself talking to my friends about the emotion chip and how the PS2 had the most advance CPU... and guess what Sony abandon it and many of the things they showed on tech demos never materialized."

Thats acutally NOT TRUE. Cell is the Evolution of the EE. Its still part of Ken Kutaragi's Vision. His vision is a future with Parallel Processing.

the cell is a joint venture between sony, toshiba, and ibm. They all equally own it through a joint company called STi. Sony sold its cell factories to toshiba to make back some of the money it spent in r&d for the cell. It didnt sell its share in the processor and factories have nothing to do with research and development. Sony owns as much of the cell as its co-creators. IBM has been using the cell to make servers and the most powerful supercomputer on earth. You would have to be crazy to think the next playstation wont be a cell based engine considering:
1) there isnt anything as powerful
2) they spent so much money developing it
3) by the time the ps4 is out, devs will understand the cell technology. so why would you change it on them again, knowing the kind of problems it will cause.
4) cell technology will be much cheaper to produce having been around for so long.

That's actually true and in a way I think it would have be worth the risk if Sony was that risky. That would allow Killzone 2 to be in 1080p with 60fps instead of 720p at 30fps.

Not sure if they'll ever use multiple cpus in a game console, but one CELL on the roadmap has 2 cores and 32spus. That's about the same SPU performance (maybe more, since its possibly optimized) like those 4 PS3, and the 2 PPU cores could be enough to what those 4 PS3 do, but will be more efficient because the share short data paths. Maybe, a multiple RSX approach could be added. That's the only thing where I would be curious to see how to scale this chip. With a CELL beast, an old fashioned RSX (or multiples of it) could be sufficient and used as a rasterizer only. Rest can be done by the CELL. So, I think these theories are not to far off - except the market dictates a Wii-like approach for the next gen.

I would be curious to learn, how they connected those 4 PS3s. And how the communication works between them. Just a 4 way HDMI port wouldn't do, I guess.

Anyway, before one says, 3840x2160, what for. It would also give you 4x more details on 1080p.

Given this scenario, it is not necessary to build a whole new console, many have already used multiple PS3's working together to make a supercomputer, so it would only be necessary to buy another PS3 and write a firmware to let them work together. All PS3's have Wifi so they could easily communicate with each other at high speeds. When PS3 hits $150 price range it would be easy and cheap for anybody to join the next gen by buying another PS3.
