Analyst is "absolutely convinced" that Wii HD is in development

Rumors have been circling around as of late that Nintendo has a WiiHD system in development and has been showing it off to a few select people. Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has commented on the speculation and is "absolutely convinced" that a Wii HD system is being created by Nintendo. "A Wii HD would really position Nintendo well, which is why I'm absolutely convinced there is a Wii HD coming. Businesswise, they can't have people saying that their machine is a toy for my mom."

No HD doesn't really bother me, but I would like for Nintendo to fix online. I don't know why people want a DVD player, doesn't everyone have at least one or two?

Exactly...

Who wants DVD playback? Everyone has a DVD player already.

DVD is right on the limit of being too small for gaming now anyway. I'm not saying they should use blu-ray, but they need to at least use a high density format.

3 - I see your point, but
There is no "fixing" Nintendo's current online support. Mario Kart's Online + Wii Speak is about as far as I can see them going. Even though third parties are putting out more advanced options that are comparable (I didn't say better) to XBL or PSN, Nintendo wants to play it safe for its casual audience.

They need to revamp their system. Give it more features for the hardcore gamers to turn on via extra menus that the casual crowd wouldn't want to mess with. They also need to make friend codes the default, but allow it to be turned off and put in a legal disclaimer. Then they can let lawyers, not the PR handle the heat.

how is it too late?
It wont be released after a normal 5 year cycle.

Wii is still selling, and as long its not going down, no reason to release Wii-HD.

Of course one is in development.

They've made a bucket of money off the Wii, so now they are going to give a little back to their "old school" followers that have been with them for years.
Thanks Nintendo I always knew in my heart that you actually cared for us (although I doubted it for a while).

The system will be HD, it will come with an all-in-one Wiimote & motion plus device (not two separate snap together parts), and will be backward compatible with Wii.

Nintendo will also keep the Wii going as an entry level console like the PS2. I.e. Sony business model. PS2 and PS3. Keeping two consoles going concurrently. A low powered casual device with a couple of core titles released a year, but also a high end console for gamers that is powerful enough to be capable of multiplatform ports. Res Evil 5, GTA4, Fallout3, Dead Space, Bioshock etc. etc. etc. Crysis WiiHD anyone?

Im kinda on the fence about HD.....i want it for games like F-Zero,Starfox ,and def. Metroid but i have an odd feeling about Mario and Zelda and more colorful Nintendo Franchises going HD
I mean how much more realistic do you want Mario to get?

I understand your concerns about Mario, but going 3D with Mario 64 was pushing tech back on the N64 and Nintendo pulled it off great. Mario Galaxy pushed the Wii hardware and was still Mario at the end of the day. I wouldn't worry about the plumber. You can still keep him Cartoony even in HD. You just get a sharper image.

Zelda on the other hand. I'd love to see Hyrule realised in HD with buckets of memory for textures, individual blades of grass and a Dolby Digital score. Remember Ocarina of Time pushed draw distances back on the N64. It was epic.
I want an Epic Zelda that reclaims the RPG crown back from companies like Bethdesta or Level-5. I don't think Link should talk, but I'd like to hear voices put to the other characters (Tingle anyone?)

F-Zero in 1080p 60fps would be awesome (Like Wipeout HD)
I always preferred F-Zero to Wipeout. The speed was awesome and I liked the fact that there were no weapons. It was just driving skill and knocking people of the tracks.

I want to see what Retro Studios can do with an HD console!

I see your point and def. everything you said would be awesome.........but heres the kicker would they come out as fast?
I mean right now in less then 2 years we have had a new Mario,Zelda,Brawl,Kart,Metroid (this serious is not over hashed imo),Party,Paper,Sluggers, etc. and we have more franchises coming like Punchout,SP 2,and the rumored Kid,F-zero and Starfox.
Would we have had half that if the wii was already HD?and would we be happy?seeing as how people dont even think thats enough and takes longer to produce?

That's a valid point. HD titles take a lot longer to produce (Kojima said they had to have 4 times the staff working on MGS4) ... but if Nintendo had have built an HD system then they would have attracted more third parties, so we'd have had more games in between the Marios and Zeldas to keep us going.

Some people may have differing opinions to this, but I'm patient. I can wait for Mario and Zelda because they are quality titles, and if Nintendo had had a system comparable to the 360 and the PS3 then we would have had multiplatform titles like GTA4, CoD4, Resident Evil 5.
Third party titles that would keep us going until the next Nintendo hit came out.

I don't mind waiting for the Big N titles as long as there are Third Party offerings in between.

In fact I think that is the root of the problem. Lack of Third party support. Nintendo have had to provide our Wii game experiences as Third Party support is so low. EDIT: I mean "Quality" Third Party support.

My opinion is that Nintendo are fast-tracking the Wii HD in order to gain wider third party support.
In the meantime - Thank goodness we have companies like High Voltage.

@product,

Mario doesn't have to be realistic, the worlds and stuff could benefit from this. Imagine the creativity of many things at the same time...although Wii is doing a great job already( SMG was a good looking game ) but that extra power Could help with more complex stuff that is shown on screen and behind the "scene" )
As for zelda, i would love to see Majora's mask renewed... that game was the " darkest" zelda game ever made xD....it was weird...but in a good way.

7 - sounds good i guess
donno. I like the idea that it'll support 1080? or 720? .. It's really a shame it wasn't considered on origional release. What's a guy like me to do now? trade my old wii in for a new one? (seems like a waste of money/materials. .etc etc)

Personally i'd like to see some games again that i want to buy *first*!! .. before forking over more money. I had a fun time playing the wii, but where are the games?? i beat metroid 3 a long time ago.

I hear you guy... and I'm sure that there are a ton of people who invested in the Wii probably feel the same way as you do. Of course, I would consider a purchase if it can do something like upscaling to the older games as well as some newer titles.

8 - Oh Boy!
High Def! Of course, there isn't enough space to really do any downloading really but... Oh Boy! High Def! Oh and then there's a wifi system that is far too complex and unfriendly but... you get the idea.

I love the wii but I see the faults of the machine and once they implement a solution for the storage and online problems (the friend codes have got to either go or make it so that the console code is the only code you really need when connecting. Putting in a real style of voice chat wouldn't hurt either.

The question is not if Nintendo is preparing a high definition machine -- they are obviously planning it -- but when it will be released. My guess is that they will do it closer to Microsoft than Sony this time.

10 - Oh gosh
How dumb can the media play to be, I mean coy isn't even the word to use for this kind of rubbish.

Obviously the Wii will have a successor, Shigeru Miyamoto went on record to say it will be more technichally powerful than the Wii. Iwata went on record to say that they are always working on their next console and usually right after one is released, the only difference is that they will not release the console until 3rd parties and their own internal development teams can't innovate any longer with what is available.

Holy crap, I've never understood why people are noted when they are pointing out the obvious. Yet I never get quoted as: "Forum goer absolutley certain that Wii HD is in development!"

Guys, I think you're all missing the big picture, which is that the analyst in question is Michael Pachter. That he is "absolutely convinced" that something is going to happen is reason enough to believe that it's not going to happen.

Some are you are completely misunderstanding this. WiiHD, or rather, Wii 2, is not coming out anytime soon. Some of you are acting like the guy is saying it’s gonna be released in 1-2 years. That’s not what he said. For those of you who don’t know, it’s coming out in 2011. And yes, Wii 2 is pretty much confirmed. My proof?

1) Nintendo has increased their Research and Development costs 10 fold in the last 3 years. When the Wii was launched, it almost tripled to around $100 million somethin, and this year, it increased to $340 million (or somewhere around there.) Know what that means? They’re making a major project.

2) Remember that one thing that had Nintendo’s name on it? About the holographic storage? Yea. And that IS for Wii 2, because the SD cards are obviously the Wii’s storage. So what are they doing with the Holographic storage stuff? Yea, they’re next system.

3) 2011 is completely accurate because that’s exactly how long the Wii can last. It’s too weak to survive more than 5 years. Devs would eventually get tired of not having an HD console, casuals and Nintendo included. So what do they do? Make a PS3 with a WiiMote.

It only makes sense people.

God, seriously, are there any wise people on the internet? The only person that I've noticed that has sense is Sidar.

Um, I was making a light joke about Pachter, based off of some his recent predictions that didn't fare so well. I didn't actually intend for it to be taken seriously. o-o

"Some of you are acting like the guy is saying it’s gonna be released in 1-2 years. That's not what he said"

Well, if we take into account that Pachter's been talking about this High-def Wii 2 thing since last year, 1-2 years does seem to match up with the time-frame he previously suggested.

http://www.gamepro.com/arti...

July 2007: "In two or three years, commodity prices for graphics processors and CPUs may decline to the point that a High Definition Wii could be introduced. If so, Nintendo will likely introduce one."

Two-to-three years one year later gives one-to-two years, assuming my math's correct.

"God, seriously, are there any wise people on the internet?"

I work in IT, so I can say with a fair degree of certainty: No.

I didn't declare myself as smart. I just wanted to clear everything up cause some people in here are confused. And I know I stated 2011, but let me take that back. What I meant to say is around 2011. Like I stated in my 3rd point, I said "2011 is completely accurate"- as in; that's seems to be a good guess.

And your right, it's all rumor, but it does all make sense.

I'm not impressed with this "analyst". Of course Nintendo has somersuch HD in development. They absolutely are going to have to have to go full HD eventually. This information is no more newsworthy than the fact that my feet hurt.
