Nintendo Doesn't Want You To Play Their Games

According to the article, the author writes:

"All along gamers have been questioning, gesturing and complaining about Nintendo's goals for the hardcore market. Well, aside from their own first-party endeavors – though, this usually only includes Mario and Zelda games – Nintendo's prime focus is on the anti-promotion of hardcore games. Purposefully, they are not releasing screenshots, trailers or crazy marketing schemes like Microsoft, for the hardcore market."

"Nintendo has basically gone full-casual, with the occasional toss-in of a third-party hardcore title every once in a while. But do not expect to see any chart topping games exclusively on the Wii that will rival the innovation and gameplay likes of Gears of War 2, KillZone 2, Resistance 2, Forza Motorsport or Gran Turismo. It looks as if those days are long gone.
"

yeah because lead developers don't have their own views on things and don't have their own goals as a developer...

This whole wii-casual-doomsday is getting tiresome.
they announced some great games for the Wii just a day ago and yet we are at the brink of total casual domination.

LOL.

but whatever..its hate the Wii week so i expect more articles about why they think everything is casualized( ignoring the fact that if they release a Core game, core gamers won't support it...the irony)

1.1 - Well...
They have succeeded! I haven't tried to play a nintendo game in a while, and have no plans to in the future. Shame really... I considered myself a true Zelda fan at one point in time!

Would it been different if Thirdparty developers had pumped out games like they are planning in 2009 at the beginning?
Would you still be a zelda fan then?

Because from what i understand Zelda:TP wasn't bad at all.
It actually matured from a story telling standpoint.
You can't say it was a bad game.
It was just another great title from Nintendo.
( saying you didn't like it, is your opinion not gonna bash you on that but you can't ignore that they did indeed made a quality game)

So what was wrong with that?
I really want to know...you are willing to stop playing the franchise you loved because Nintendo makes casual games too?(like they always have btw).

So again, would thirdparty support in the beginning change anything?

2 - WTF..
Hmmm... just making sure I get this straight. This article is saying that nintendo is PURPOSELY not selling games in order to sell more games. WTF. Nintendo is about making money and making quality games. With the exception of Majoras Mask, nintendos' first party harcore games such as Zelda, Mario, metroid...etc have never been released within a yr or 2 of each other so i dont know why people are complaining about that.. Now as far as marketing, YES nintendo should have marketed Metroid Prime 3 better but to go as far as saying that they dont want the hardcore games to sell well is just stupid and makes no business sense at all. WTF!

Hardcore gamers are at a crossroads these days. They either need to change with the times, or die out. Now, changing doesn't mean abandoning their precious first person shooters all together. No, it simply means accepting that casual gaming is here and it's not going anywhere.

You can still get your quality hardcore games on the PS3 and the 360, those markets aren't going anywhere. But what Nintendo has done is open the gates up to let MORE people play games they wouldn't have before. If that means casualizing some of Nintendo's franchises, so be it. There's still plenty of quality to go around.

You know what, you never know, one of these 'casuals' that play just Wii Sports and Guitar Hero 3 might one day decide that they want to get into game programming, because of their enjoyment from those casual games. This person could go on to create one of the best video games of its generation. And it would be all because Nintendo presented them the opportunity to get into gaming in a nice simple way.

So don't bash Nintendo for 'going casual', it's getting more people into gaming, which in turn will help the entire industry. Stop being so damn greedy.

I agree with that being well put. I'm not hardcore but not casual. I'll stick to consoles and pc titles for my needs but it's good that someone out there is open up to a whole new group of gamers who have to be more casual about their gaming hobby. There should be different flavors of gaming to choose from so all gamers have a choice, and you can always change or try the other "flavors" too. :)

Something you are forgetting is causal fans also bring fads. Everyone is so happy to see so called gamers get systems but then feel silly when they don't show back up. Like he was trying to say Nintendo doesn't want you because at some point you will want more of them. Imagine a Wii Sports title with over 50 events. Well not likely because they will make the next one with 15 events to keep it causal and not be to big for the causal fan. And say goodbye to any kind of realism because they want to keep the price down and there systems may never again embrace the higher end of technology.

@dericb

That has to be one of the dumbest thing I've heard said, although it's not the first time I've heard it said. You and a lot of others read this crap that someone else blogs about and you just repeat it over and over again. Stop me when these things sound familiar - soccer moms, grandmas, casuals, graphics suck... You all sound like pawns with no original thoughts of your own. I'm sure if you were president of Nintendo, you'd pass up all of this market and make "manly" hardware and "manly" games. Get real.

yup i agree too and someday i hope to start a small companie making games exclusive or not exclusive so i'll probably need people of certian skills

and ive been inspired by certain games of the past so the idea was sort of before the ps3, wii and came from legend of dragoon still my favourite game till this day

and my idea of a companie is to make mostly and only rpg games for wii and ps3 well for the future systems since im only 17 lol

i will make sure the wii gets non crappy games hardcore games if you want to call it that

6 - This whole....
Casual-Hardcore s|-|1t is starting to bother me, I mean, ok there are a lot of casuals (grandmas, moms, lil sisters etc) but I would say that 360 has a LOT of "Hardcore" gamers that are really just casuals (they only play easy games, dislike anything turn-based or RPG, only play shooters online, love to curse, and love to pose as "Hardcore" gamers, yet they have never beat any RPG game, know nothing about Metal Gear (call it a "lame story movie lolololol"), say that FF sucks because its "you hit me and I hit u boredoom" and say that FPS games are the best ever, haven't even beat Super Mario Bros, have never beat any zelda, yet call it kiddie, they love halos and sport games, those call themselves hardcores, just because its the new "cool thrend" and because their Gamerscore is "over 9,000!"'

for the record, can somebody please explain me, what truly makes a HARDCORE gamer, because for me, one of those people I described above is as casual gamer as any mom or granma that plays Wii sports all day.

BTW TO ME, I view GTA games as casual as Wii sports, truly hardcore to me is Zelda Wind Waker, yet most people think otherwise? they call Zelda wind Waker kiddie, but if you put a 13 years old kid in front of Zelda Wind Waker and GTA wich game do you think they will choose? Zelda? hell no, they will go all GTA on you, in fact I BET my life that most of halo3 and gta4 sales are underaged people that bough them. Zelda is TRULY hardcore to me, because it takes thinking to solve puzzles, exploring to find things, not just mindless shooting and OMG BUT DLX GTA HAS BL00D AND SEX AND J00S CAN KILL PEOPLE and ZELDA HAS CUTE GRAPHIX NOT HD, U SUCK, etc etc. So yeah I will say it now and forever, Halo 3 and GTA are more casual that what Zelda and Mario (main titles) can ever be.

Thing that makes me mad is people have no clue what "hardcore" means nor do they know "core" nor do they know what "casual" means.
People who bash the different and say different is casual are just blindly thinking that.Creativity doesnt need blood or guns to be a core title or hardcore title.

ohh cmon nintendo kids, you can do better than this?.. when people say hardcore they mean "mature", but ofc kids like you (0-12y) couldnt even figure that out (retards)..
And if you tell me Zelda windwaker is more mature than Halo, GTA and even GeOW you need to see a doctor dude

A newcomer...

So to be a hardcore gamer you need to be "mature".
Ok ok...so because i like different games and think of them in a different way on a mature level i must be hardcore too.
Ok great thank you.

Zelda is not more mature than Halo, its more hardcore than halo XD.
(see how stupid it sounds? hardcore smardcore, get a hint)

Edit: why is it always 12...? so when you are 13 you are mature?
AAAAhaaa that explains the immature screaming kids on Xbox live.

Btw he said GTA is more CASUAL, read damn it.
I just realized you called casual people kids....

edit:edit
> openzone, if you are here to trash the place openzone.
Seriously why do people like you come in just to say stuff like that .. Calling people retards isn't a way to make friends.

8.2 - Mature?
@ Da I33t Monkey

You think because you play those games it makes you mature? You are seriously misguided. Games that people choose to play can tell you a lot about them, but level of maturity isn't one of those things. I can tell a lot about your level of maturity now and it isn't because of the games you listed.

10 - It depends on your perspective of hard-core
The Wii has done amazing things for the perception of video gaming, it opened up people's minds about the possibility of having a "family-gaming night" when gaming has never been considered by some people who never play games as a form of entertainment. So for that, I respect what the Wii has accomplished. As far as hardcore goes, the lines between what is considered hard-core and what is casual is being blurred by the gaming industry. Back in the day, there were no overshields, cover-systems, or save points. We can all remember getting to that end level boss with only an inch of power left, just so he can hit you one time, and you have to start the level all over again. We were hardcore then. But, as people grow up, they can't devote everyday to gaming, at least for long periods of time. You can still play Gears and Resistance casually.

okay kids, let me stop you right there before you make anymore dumb comments.

Sidar: I newer said hardcore and mature gaming where the same? People just generally think that hardcore means mature -_-
And sure Zelda is more hardcore than Halo, BUT ITS STILL FOR KIDS, (windwaker)

And trust me dumbass there would be ALOT screaming bambinos on Wii online games, IF THEY ONLY HAD A MICROPHONE TO SCREAM INTO, hahaha burn, epic fail nintendo

Trovon: For your information, there ARENT any families thinking the wii is funny, no and i mean NO self-respecting adult would choose to play mario galaxy over Gears of War. Im sorry to have opened you eyes. No old people are playing wii either? its just kids and nintendo die-hard fans that are loving the wii? But you have been tricked into beliving otherwise by seing old people and girls playing the crap in NINTENDOS commercials.

6/7 of my friends that where dumb enough to buy a wii on release or later, have sold it today. And bought and 360 og PS3 instead, the last one has both a Wii and 360, and guess what? his wii is collecting dust.
