Am I the only one that wonders Why the F@ck there is a picture of cloud and why the story mentions cloud when hes only #2. Shouldn't the proper story mention how Mario is the most popular character in Japan.

well...fine take out the 360 for all i care...i'd just love for this game to go down as the best RPG in history...
as a side not, it's sad with all the disagrees to the original post as i don't think i was praising nor attacking any console just happened to put ps3/xbox360 in the same sentence...sigh....fanboys

Cloud is most GENERIC game character EVER! Of course by Japanese standards. Even Anime included. Spiky hair, Blond, blue eyed, loyal, brave,good hearted young preteen boy that is ready to do anything to help his friends in need, even sacrifice him self. In short GENERIC!

Fake identity, over-exposed by radiations similar to nuclear effects, genetically modified with an alien DNA, lier, worked for a destructive company then as a terrorist, easily manipulated and self-manipulated, has no problem to cross-dress and seems to prefer men.

He looks like the perfect representation of a hero but is not that much. Very well shaped personality.

Clouds spikey hair, blue eyes maybe but the list ends there. He was not a preteen, he was 21, a rare sight for Japanese anime characters. He also was not a nice guy, AT ALL. He was willing to take Marlene's "Skoolin" money from Barret to pay him. At the begining he was just in it fo the money.

And the main character being an imposter is a really rare sight in video games/anime.

Ok that FF7 was a super cool RPG but that was the only game that Cloud was the protagonist.

I think Cloud would appear in a top 10 list as 10th.

Come on,characters like Sonic,Zelda,Link,Samus Aren,Cid(many FFs),Donkey Kong and quite a vew others that are on the market for more then 25 years should come before Cloud,those names should be more hell much more popular.

Just because they have more games then him don't make them anymore popular. Even if they are in 12 games to his 2-3, I will play FFVII over any of the ones you stated anyday. The game was a pop cultural phenomenon.

12 - I am STILL dumbfounded...
... by the fact that, as mentioned by earlier posters, Square Enix has yet to announce a re-make of FF7. While I am one of those who have adopted the school of thought that a re-make of FF7 is a very risky proposition (what with the chances of screwing it up and stuff), it is not FINANCIALLY risky. In fact, it's quite possibly the easiest gajillion dollars Square Enix could ever make. My only thought is that maybe they wanted to perfect a PS3/next gen toolset (Crystal for FF13) before starting on the remake. If this is indeed the case, look for an announcement shortly after FF13 goes gold, which, at this rate, should be some time in 2013. Sigh...

I believe I have been reading this sort of article for the past 8 or 9 years, Mario and Cloud right up there.
Funny how no new characters seem to be 'revolutionary' enough to take the top spot.

On a side note, I am opposed to a remake of FFVII... I view Squaresoft as gods, and SquareEnix is like a priest of those gods, but brings nothing new to the people, and distorts the works of the old gods.

If Square Enix was still Squaresoft, I would love it. But they don't have the same staff and people to work on the remake anymore and it seems like Square Enix might half-ass it if they did decide to remake it.

Just because they've decided to move on with their ambitions doesn't mean that they're not the same people. Of course, they literally aren't the "same" people. You'd have to go to mystwalker to get the old squaresoft back, and they've done some fine work with lost od and blue dragon. But wait, because you're all pro Sony you can't see past your own console, so you have no one else to blame but yourself.

And Cloud was cool, but by no means was he revolutionary. A guy with a giant sword, thin linguine arms and an 80's glam metal/Japanese Kabuki hybrid hair style?! Squall was way cooler! He had the Tom Cruise good guy looks, he had that awesome gunblade and he had a nicer girlfriend than Tifa (big boobies, that's so Tomb Raider circa 1996) and Aerith (she was nice, I'll admit). FF VIII's story was way better, and its groundwork and art style was continued in the FFs to follow. Parasyte Eve (I believe) used FF VIII's engine (Aya looked so much like Quistis). FF VII's art style was never seen again, though I believe it was the same person as it is today (Nomura, right?).

This was actually surprising to learn, mainly because Mario has been around longer and in soooooooooo many games (i.e. Smash Bros., Mario Tennis, golf, kart, et cetera) and Cloud has been in only 1 game that i know of (im not a huge FF fan, and i dont know if he was in Japan only releases). but then again, after learning that this was in JAPAN, it made sense, because i wouldve thought Snake would be higher, but MGS isnt big there, so i understand now :) lol

but still kinda surprising.
