Exclusives: A dying trend

GameXtract writes "Well what a surprise. Capcom has declared that all major titles that they're making are to be multiplatform games for the next fiscal year. Is that really that big a surprise? I mean, really. With titles like Devil May Cry 4, Resident Evil 5, and Street Fighter IV going multi, one could only ponder if console exclusivity was going to be in the developer's future…"

For Microsoft, at least. Sony has the most exclusives as always. How many 360 exclusives can YOU list? And yes I do mean exclusive as in Xbox 360 exclusive, not PC and 360 exclusive (that doesn't even make any sense, seeing how the PC IS a platform making those 360 games multi-platform). Well?

@ Breakfast

How many AAA exclusive games have the 360 gotten this year? NONE.

None of the PS3's good exclusives are garbage, MGS4 is one of the highest rated exclusive games. I consider Uncharted Drakes Fortune a AAA PS3 exclusive as well, and the PS3 has more than just one AAA exclusive.

And the quality games that do ground breaking gameplay elements are also a dying trend. Keep up with the money gouging tactics Square Enix and Capcom.

Well to be fair, some PS3 titles are 1-3 points from averaging 90+ (Hmm I wonder why?)

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots: 93
Ratchet And Clank Future: Tools Of Destruction: 89
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune: 88
Ninja Gaiden Sigma: 88
Resistance: Fall Of Man: 87

Warhawk is definitely a AAA game with all the map packs and extra content and you will agree if you've played the game with all the updates. And coming up shortly:

Resistance 2
InFamous
Little Big Planet
SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation
Killzone 2
etc etc.

360 didn't have one AAA game so far and only has 5 exclusive titles rated 90+ not counting XBL games and will lose Bioshock making it 4.
Honestly, only games I'm looking forward to is Gears and Fable 2. Banjo is most likely a rental or borrowing from a friend and where's Alan Wake and Splinter Cell? And Rick is right about the exclusive to consoles and PC's...

Sony are always looking into the future, hence the reason they have never really bought exclusives from third parties, they may fund some studios once these studios do say they will do it exclusive for their console but sony are really focusing on building thier first and second party studio's instead of gunning for 3rd party exclusives.

Microsoft need to start working on some first party CONSOLE development teams if they don't want to keep spending millions just to get an exclusive deal, as for nintendo - meh they've always had rubbish 3rd party support and always sold big on their first party games.

Anyway yeah, i'm glad 3rd party exclusives are dying - there are some amazing 3rd party exclusive games that people cannot afford to play simply because they cannot afford the other console, this way maybe people won't be missing out some amazing experiences like mgs4, etc.

Of course though, there may be 3rd party exclusives in the future due to the fact some may be only possible on a certain console, not pointing any fingers of course as i don't see 3rd party exclusives dying till at least midway through the next generation.

Breakfast, stop being a stubborn child. Just know the fact the 360 has the weakest 1st party therefore they only have a handful of real exclusives. You got nothing outside of Halo, Gears, Rare developer, Peter Moleneux and that's about it. Everything else is fair game to be multiplatform. It looks like you made the mistake of buying the wrong system.

What you just named like 6 multiplat games

And if we go that way then lets start:

Uncharted.
R&C.
MGS4.
Resistance 1.
Folklore(before you said this game is crap or something IGN gave it 9 so in my book AAA).
Heavenly Sword.

An in December the numbers grow a lot compared to the Xbox 360.

I think it's bad for console gaming. I can see a future where all consoles are, are PCs with varying specifications and makes, just with copyright protection and proprietry formats, and lack of access to the internal settings of the machine.

We're starting to see this with diferent SKUs for consoles, and now with most games being multiplatform they are being developed with lots of different hardware in mind. Not much different from developing for PC. Games now have installs, patches and expansions on consoles. Games on consoles are starting to neglect one of the consoles' only advantages: offline multiplayer due to the nature of the control scheme and the fact your TV screen is usually larger than your monitor. Games are getting more bugs in and aren't being polished for the particular console they're on.

I can see in the future that more and more of the hassles of PC games will transfer across to the consoles; tedious installs and setup processes, reinstalls, freeing up space on your hard drive by deleting old games, wanting to play them again, driver updates, performance issues, incompatibility issues, tweaking settings to get a better framerate. All caused by a multitude of hardware setups for the same game, so the development and testing time is spread too thin across all the platforms and SKUs.

6.1 - @ thor I agree have a bubble
I agree but, I also see consoles turning into a pc genre as a good thing. I mean really, didn't we all want to have a real good pc to play Crysis(ok game, great graphics) when it released? I know I did; I had my ps3 since jan 07. But, I am glad it's more pc oriented(kb & mouse, internet browser, etc..) that means I can do more with it than just game when I don't have enough cash to get a pc. I have a labtop, but I know I can't play some of the games released for pc. So, I can sympathize with companies, when they make their console similar to stay competitive. But, also I see your point with quality lacking in games. Then again this wouldn't be a WoW deal where we can just upgrade our pc and play. Companies will want to create new consoles to bring interest back in their favor to make more money(ala EA's routine ***cough***madden***cough***)

I don't think you should use unconfirmed-for-09 games on that list. Some of those could be '10 releases

GoW3, Versus 13, Team ICO game. We also have no info on Uncharted 2, so there's no telling when that will be released.

I agree with your general point, just not how you're backing it up.

10 - Gotta agree with the article...
Exclusives, third party ones at least, ARE a dying trend. And I blame it ENTIRELY on the rapidly advancing technology in consoles. It costs SO much money and takes SO much more time to develop games this gen that it becomes much more difficult to actually MAKE money on a game.

Now, that being said, do I regret the way console gaming is headed? Hell no! I'm happy that we have such powerful machines and that the design companies take so bloody long and spend so much money designing awesome games. If that means that the game has to be released on a different console as well as my console of choice, then so be it.

As for exclusives COMPLETELY dying out, I don't think that's likely. I expect they may soon be relegated to first-party titles only status, but that could just further improve the quality of exclusives that we get! 1st party devs will know that it's up to them to differentiate the consoles and there products will get even better.

My 2 cents.

11 - This sucks
All the Xbox fans are too busy playing their games to come N4G and set you guys straight. All there is is Breakfast.

Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise (say what you want, it has a meta score of 83)

Fable 2

Left 4 Dead

Gears of War 2

Halo Wars

Banjo Kazooie: N&B

GTA DLC

Fallout 3 DLC

Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3

I guess now all I'm gonna do is wait for you PS3 fans to tell me how Viva Pinata doesn't count, Banjo Kazooie's gonna suck, that nobody plays GTA 4 anymore, that exclusive DLC doesn't matter, and to top it all off, and that hardly any of them are exclusives because they come out on PC as well.

Guess I'll go play Trouble in Paradise while I wait.

11.2 - Ahem
Yes I did. I don't care what you say, I'm at least positive that Viva Pinata is a AAA game, seeing as I own it. And I don't have any reason to believe that Banjo Kazooie won't be fun. I don't care, maybe your taste in games is different from mine. But if someone can list Ratchet and Clank for PS3, then I can list Banjo Kazooie for the 360.

Anybody with a brain can tell you that just because a game has "cute" characters, that doesn't mean it's not a worthwhile game.

I would also like to be directed to where all of the 360 fans are, so that I can speak with them.

Look, I'm probably not going to buy left 4 dead, doesn't look that great to me, but if I did, I'd buy it for my laptop. I don't own a 360. That basically means it's not exclusive. And I'm sure red alert 3 is coming to PC, and will be better on PC I mean it's an RTS you've got to have keyboard and mouse. Not to mention PC's superior graphics.

DLC does matter, but it depends on what it is. GTA4 DLC looks like it could be something quite special, but we really don't know at this stage. But the very fact you are mentioning it looks like you want to pad out your list. I won't list all the 1st and 2nd party PS3 exclusives coming out in the next year (and beyond) but it's a load more than even your padded list.

If we count 83 as a great metacritic score (I actually agree here, it is), then there are many great PS3 games that xbox fanboys ignore and still carry on that PS3 only has 1 good game (even the most diehard of fanboys has to admit there's at least 1 AAA title exclusive to PS3).

11.6 - It may sound
Like I'm a fanboy for the Xbox 360, but I'm truly not. It's true that I only own an Xbox and Wii, but my brother owns a PS3, and I play it a lot.

And as I said, this article doesn't mention anything about PC exclusives, so I wasn't counting the PC. If you don't own an Xbox, it seems like you would of course buy it for the PC, that's just common sense.

Everything I listed were things for the Xbox 360 that I was looking forward to. I added the DLC almost as a second thought because I'm gonna be getting them. I look forward at the PS3's lineup, and the only game I see that would be worth buying a PS3 for may be LBP. But other than that, I don't see a reason to shell out the money for one yet. Blu-Ray's cool, but I don't have an HDTV in my bed room, and don't plan on getting one anytime soon.

Ask around, and you'll find people making lists for the sake of lists. They aren't games that they're gonna get, they're games that they can add to their list to extend it. Someone posted a list of around 20 exclusive titles for the PS3, and I had only heard of around 6 or 7 of them. I could have probably added a couple of games to my list, but then it would be full of complete fluff of games that I wasn't looking forward to. Everything I listed, I can't wait to get my hands on.

What was the point of your post? That you have exclusive DLC for some games, games that didn't come out, and Viva Pinata? Nice. Why not list games that are already out? The problem is so far not one game from 360 is amazing this year. Gears 2 and Fable 2 are coming out, but as I said before where is my Splinter Cell and maybe Alan Wake? To be honest I only care about Fable 2, Gears 2, Fallout 3 for 360 this year. Viv Pinata has never appealed to me so w/e, that's your opinion.

11.8 - Well then
The point of my post was that Sony isn't "the" only console out there with exclusives, as much as the Sony Defense Force that roams these comment sections would like everyone to believe. It's slightly annoying that these comment sections are so one sided against the Xbox.

And I'm not gonna disagree with you, the Xbox hasn't had a AAA hit, but the fact that the PS3 has had one isn't all that amazing. As I said in my post above yours, those were all things that I'm looking forward to. So you're right, it is my opinion.

In all honesty, as I've said, I only want to get my hands on Little Big Planet for the PS3. It's the only game that looks like something I haven't played before, and will fill a niche that the Xbox doesn't have. Other than that, I can get FPS's on my 360.

DLC does just seem like you're padding the list out though but I kinda understand what you're getting at.

The article is kinda spot on though but he should have said 3rd party exclusives in the title even if it's obvious that is what he meant when talking about it. Looks to me like Sony saw it going this way years ago and have taken action where MS just threw money at people to make once exclusive games multi-plat and go ahead and get a couple exclusives of their own.

What I do hope is that MS pull their fingers out of their ass and come up with something better than a price cut to keep Sony and their 1st/2nd party devs creating innovating and intriguing IP's cuz all a price cut will force Sony into is doing the same (at some point) and that doesn't really benefit me at all :p
