Sony and Samsung both claim world's first 200Hz TV

gadgetzone.com.au writes: "Sony and Samsung have taken each other on for an LCD title where there can be only one winner. The world's leading trade show, IFA (hosted in Berlin), has already revealed some new and exciting technologies, but before its imminent closing day, it has unveiled a rivalry between Sony and Samsung. The two big name companies have both made the claim of having the "world's first" 200Hz LCD TV."

1.1 - True.
But doesn't Samsung manufacture, or have a hand in manufacturing, Sony's LCDs? Either way, these two companies consistantly bring quality to the market.

1.2 - Sony TV's use Samsung LCDs....
This is a given fact in the LCD industry.... Sony provides R&D money and Samsung manufactures everything.

Yup. They use the very same screens in most competitor models.

Still, I'm not that geek, don't know if the actual refresh rate depend on the screen or other components.

What I know is that refresh rate is different from frame rate. Like most projectors that display 24fps but each frame is show 2 or 3 times, making it 48 or 72Hz.

So probably this is just more BS they are throwing at us, since they can make a monitor with such refresh rate, but not able to show that level of smooth or even without any equip (movie player, console, PC, etc) that actually can make 200 frames in a second. Maybe it is useful for stereo TVs, but by the time those become popular (if ever) this will be laughable refresh rate.

I agree. I don't understand what "200 Hz" (240 Hz in those countries using NTSC) is supposed to mean other than an improvement of existing 120 Hz technology, which is itself nothing more than frame interpolation technology. Regardless, no LCD can display frames faster than its base refresh rate of 4 ms, 2 ms, etc.

So rather than calling this "Motionflow Plus ver 2.0" they just increased the theoretical frame rate.

It's a joint venture, S-LCD. Sony isn't using Samsung's lcd's and vice versa.

However, Sony has stated they are now partnering with Sharp.

These two are the best in LCDs in the market though.

2.1 - @Postedup...Agreed!
@GametimeUK...Yeah sony is first! That's not important. What is important is with the release of the 200Hz tv's... the 120Hz tv's will drop in price quicker!

I don't really care who is first. I just want to be able to purchase a HDTV with a dramatic difference that current tv's (like buying a 120Hz tv instead of just an HDTV).

If it matters so much to you that sony was first then congratulations! If you are lucky sony will send you a free 200Hz tv for free, for being such a huge fan!

I can't wait until sony really pushes the OLED TV's though!

I understand! I am still trying to fit in myself. I have been coming to this site for about 2 years, but didn't start commenting until a year ago... and still I get disrespected on here, which is why I only have 3 bubbles now.

All I do is speak the truth! It usually isn't what fanboys want to hear, but I will say what I feel reguardless!

When I make a good comment about sony... it is because it is true. When I make a bad one... the same applies!

I don't love MS<Sony or Nintendo! I respect them cause they produce what I want. If a sony fanboy can't respect my words because I don't own a Ps3 "YET", then that's their personal business. Hell, when I do buy a Ps3 they probably won't believe me anyway!

Sorry too much running off. Point is, just do what you do and it will be alright!

Bubble up!

Sony and Samsung are the same tv cuz they both make each other's parts. So its no wonder both are saying they have the first.

The only part they share is the LCD panel and that Samsung probably manufactures Sony LCD TVs.

I always wondered about that! My Samsung 906bw 19" pc monitor has dynamic contrast, 2000:1 ratio, and a 2ms response. I turn on RTA (response time acceleration) but i do notice banding of colors while certain scenes refresh. And the dynamic contrast thing is bogus, it just dims the screen at the most inopportune moments (horror games, anyone?).
