Madden Curse: Fact or Fiction?

TGR - "The first video game to bear Madden's name was released way back in 1988, called John Madden Football. But it didn't sport an athlete on the cover, only Madden himself. An actual player didn't grace the cover for more than a decade.

Perhaps replacing Madden's rosy-cheeked face upset the cosmos; the Madden Curse was born. Every cover athlete has fallen on hard times after the game's release, but many players and gamers deny its existence. After all, football is a rough sport by nature. Players are bound to have a tough year now and again. Right?"

Agreed, though it obviously affects each player differently. I really wonder what makes the Curse tick: is it the fact that EA always chooses someone after they've hit their prime? It is that everyone then starts watching the player more intensely?

It's the natural evil that EA leaks. It rubs onto the players and curses them.

I'm really hoping this years line up will go against that rep...

It has a lot of potential...

The shear fact Farve unretired proved the curses exhistance... He killed his legacy with the packers...

I wonder if there is a correlation with how the team as a whole does?

Wow, this is some kind of coincidence for the books. It's definitely a more than a little creepy to find that something has happened to all these players. I know if I were a football player I would be turning the Madden cover down.

Football is a rough business, and even when you're just starting out, the odds that you will emerged unscathed from several huge guys rushing at out simultaneously is about the same as you emerging safely from your car after it is has collided with two dump trucks, a cement mixer, and a Monster Truck driven by a slightly inebriated racer late to a show especially if you do it all the time.

The draping of the "Curse" chain around stories like this, such as the Saturday Night Live curse or the more recent affair involving Issac Hayes, Bernie Mac, and Samuel L. Jackson is to give a bit of flash to life. It's not a bad thing, necessarily, but shouldn't be looked too closely: a man could cal being divorced three times the result of a curse instead of the simpler explanation of him not being at all good at marriage.

Well realistically there is no proof of causation. There is an erie correlation...

The sports illustrated cover curse is pretty bad at times too...

My guess is that if you focused on one player every year, of course you'll see injuries and poor play. There is no "madden curse" just a crappy football game that singles out someone on the cover. Favre isn't a packer anymore and he's going to have another great season as a Jet.

At the same time though you see the opposite... You see MVP's and great players when you look at a single athlete. All of those athletes did great till the ended up on the cover...
