PS3 vs 360: When Is An 'Exclusive' An Exclusive?
87
From gameplayer: 'Exclusive' is a seriously devalued word. It isn't bankrupt yet, but it has a lot of trouble getting credit.
"Yet certain video game companies continue to bank on it, hoping its power will persuade everyday gamers to hand over their money."

"Sony/Microsoft exclusives may not be everything, but they’re the only ones that matter."
Quoted for ignorance. Even if they don't like Wii Sports (I find it boring and shallow) you have to admit it's the most popular new IP this gen and has probably sold more hardware than any other game.

1.3 - There's some truth, and then there's some very bad liners there too.
"A man buys a Mac when he wants to disappear up his own arse."
Wow, I'm not sure, but that would mean that about 25% of the PC market does. There must be another reason...
"Games coming to the PC, but this is irrelevant to the console converts."
Yikes, if a game is not coming on my console, and I truly want it, I have no problems buying it for my PC, and I'm sure many other console owners do. I would not say it's irrelevant! Some games always play better on PC anyway. (Ex.: Would not buy a RTS for a console, unless they finally use a keyboard)

I personally don't see the benefit of multi platform games to gamers. I remember the days where each console had games that defined that consoles. (Unless you feel that having access to all games on one system is a benefit, then I can't dispute that)
I'd prefer it if each company developed unique games that are ranked in the 'AAA' levels for their own consoles (I hate that term so much).
That way, I am compelled to own both consoles. (or all three)
However, that will never happen. Mix platform titles = more money for developers and there is nothing wrong with that. They are a business and all.

Technically that's the way it has always been! The first party titles are the exclusives that provide an experience (supposedly) unattainable on the other consoles. And third party developers create their game for whatever purpose they see fit!
Alot of people got mad about the FF thing cause sony owns shares in the company, but unless sony owns a controlling share value (51%) they can't argue too much. People got so used to the FF franchise being on a PS console, they seemed to think sony owned them. But Square/Enix is showing gamers the ugly truth and some people can't handle it!

I guess I was thinking of third parties only when I was making that comment.
I don't think that third party companies should console exclusive. However I feel that Images tie to each console should remain like that.
Before I get shot down with comments about how single track minded I must be and that I must be jealous about the FFXIII cross over to 360, let me put this in:
Why aim for obtaining a FF series? Why not have SE makes a equal or better title for the 360?
Why want God of War on 360? Isn't it better to get something Unique of the same calibre and same style if not better?
I guess my point really is, there is no point in blinding yourself with the person in front. Look past them, and aim for new heights.
That way, better games will keep coming out.
ps: I am gonna be shot down for these opinions aren't I?

Moving on,if a game is on multiple platforms,it isn't an exclusive.I played COD4 and Gears of War on the PC,so neither one is an exclusive.Same applies to The Agency, and all other games that release on more than one platform.

If a game is on PC and X360 I still think of it as a 360 exclusive. I guess if it is on both formats then I will opt for the 360 because I prefer playing from a couch rather than a desk.

4.3 - Only people trying to downplay MSFT will some how make a big deal out of exclusivness with both MSFT's next-gen platforms
Speaking from a console market point of view, a console exclusive is a console exclusive. The console market doesn't compete with the PC market making console/PC points moot when trying to downplay a game that is console exclusive yet has PC brethern.
I do wish the console media would just use the term "MSFT EXCLUSIVE" when games are only on Windows and Xbox, so that we can put an end to all this nonsense.
I AGREE...

youre right, i shouldnt have said "all exclusives"
cuz i did enjoy dead rising for a while and crackdown is "eh..." to me
but what i was trying to say, the BIG games that make the xbox worth owning for a potential buyer arent exclusive to that system, which is why im enjoying gears 1, mass effect, and bioshock on my pc.
@ others, well i know its a huge problem in the PC market, but ive never pirated games, pc counterparts of console games are cheaper even new, plus i found orange box and RainbowSix V for 20 bucks new. Now while all the installs and key codes and registering can be a b!tch, not having to pay to play online, cheaper games AND getting free mods and maps for certain games evens everything out.

7 - As long as we all agree
That if you can play something elsewhere, it's not exclusive to one platform, that's fine.
360 people can say 360/PC all they like, but NEVER 360 exclusive for most of their non-PS3 titles.
By these corrected criteria, which everyone should have followed from the beginning, PS3 has the most exclusives of course.

What I find funny, Sony fans being technical almost seems as if they're (from their point of view) taking away from MSFT, when MSFT designed both their platforms this way for a reason.
In a sense it is almost like Sony having two next-gen platforms and Xbox fans saying spiteful things in response to the media saying PS3 exclusive when the media says these things from an console market perspective.
Fanboys draw out the line, the media knows these two markets do not compete.
The dictionary meaning doesn't matter because 95% of the time, people are talking from the console platforms perspective.
This industry does not recognize "MSFT" vs MSFT" lol

10 - When is a n exclusive an exclusive?
when it's only one system, no PC ports or timed exclusives count and emulators definitely don't count.
FF7 is a true exclusive to PS (i can still play it on my PS3, and remote play that b1tch off my PSP on the road ;)
Exclusives will always exist because of different hard ware. LBP could run on a PC but not a 360 and def not a wii, Sony would be wise to keep LBP a PS3 exclusive and not make it a fake exclusive like Gears1(&prob2) and Halo1&2(&prob3)

The only reason it wouldn't work on 360 is because of MS's disdain for free things and user-created levels.
Unreal Tournament 3, for example. Split-screen multiplayer doesn't make up for the loss of mods and user-created levels.

According to exclusive definition(adaptated to gaming environment): it's only on one platform, otherwise it's multiplatform or timed exclusice.
That's why some X360 games that are released on PC aren't really an exclusives. Just stretched arguments to "show" X advantage over PS3 in this ridiculous console war.

In business terms you want your product to have a USP... A Unique Selling Point.
If you compare like for like features between consoles then Sony has more USP's, but for your average consumer who isn't nitpicking between built in WiFi and the Cell vs Xenon, exclusive games are usually the most obvious and high profile USP's.
This makes exclusives vital for Sony and Microsoft. It's why we've seen Microsoft so desperately make traditional Sony exclusives mutliplatform. If for one second you think that this behaviour is because they want to please their existing console owners you are deluding yourselves. Microsoft is doing this to stop Sony having an edge, nothing more and in the process hopefully pick up console sales for those consumers who have been sat on the fence.
It's also why timed exclusives can work really well. They give the impression that a game is an exclusive to those who are not avid gamers. If someone walks in to a GAME or HMV in the UK looking for Rock Band - the only option is Xbox360. It doesn't matter that one day it'll be out on the PS3 - and for a consumer with a few hundred quid in their pocket at that moment it makes the 360 a compelling choice even if they are PS2 owners looking to move to next-gen.
PC exclusives are less important, and to a certain extent a poor business decision.
An exclusive PC game does not make a specific hardware manufacturer any more money, so there should be little incentive for a developer to be PC exclusive at all. The only reason to stick to the PC is if the game can not function with a joypad (many MMO's) or digital distribution is the only cost effective way to sell the game (Flash games etc) but consoles are quickly moving in to this space.
So, a strict definition of an exclusive should be... A title only appearing on one platform. But in reality an exclusive can just be smoke and mirror's used by developers or console manufacturers to boost interest/hype or make a few extra hardware sales.

There is no confusion, the dictionary ain't confused. A Game is exclusive when its only appearing one ONE single system, therefor forcing the interested buyer to buy THAT system or not playing the game at all. The second you deliver on more than one platform you instantly loose exclusivity, cause people can play it on the other platform just as well.
SMG is an exclusive Wii game, its only on the Wii and you need to buy a Wii to play it
Uncharted:Drakes Fortune is an exclusive PS3 game, its only on the PS3 and you need to buy a PS3 to play it

Before Microsoft, there was no such thing as "console exclusive", a game was either exclusive or it wasn't, but with so many XBox and 360 games on PC, fanboys needed some way to justify the lack of exclusives on Microsoft consoles and "console exclusive" was born.
Honestly, I had never heard that term before the XBox.

I don't understand how some people don't include the PC, just so you know, the PC is the largest played gaming platform in the world. So yeah, it should count.

@1.2: Provide a link to the announcement or stop talking out of your ass.
If you are playing it on PC or 360 you are still playing on a Microsoft platform. I just like to think that you will never play it on a PS3.

Poor crab :(
PC is it's own console in general.
I could play 360 exclusives without owning a 360.
You cant play PS3 exclusives without owning a PS3.

It is only an exclusive if it is made by a loyal and/or first party dev (PS3/Sony), or if it is bought with the money and greed of an evil empire (360/MS).

Not true. It can also happen when a concept is not technically possible on another platform and the IP controller/owner refuses to compromise a vision in order to make it so.
People can deny it all they want but MGS4 was not bought. It happened because it was Kojima's decision and he knew that only the PS3 could present the experience he wanted.

one could easily argue that Sony is not the slightest bit in pursuit of 3rd party exclusives...nor is MS...
Sony simply doesn't care...they have the internal power to ride out the rest of the generation...and MS is in no way intrested in getting 3rd party 'exclusives' either...they just want to share what was once stated to only be coming to the PS3...
good article though...I just spit beer all over myself when reading the PCs are not in competition with Mac comment...

the word "exlusive" means JACK SHÍT on the xbox360
its either an "exlusive" but oh wait its also on PC so PS3 fanboys can get it anyway without buying a cardboard 3fixme
or they say its "exlusive" like lost planet, like bioshock and then it comes to PS3 anyway.

When a game is published by that company it's exclusive.
Most of the games Sony announced are published by Sony.
Nintendo publishes games so they would be exclusive to that console.
Microsoft publishes games at Microsoft Studios so that would be exclusive.

8 - exclusives are the name of the game!
3rd party is all about be as equal as can be. Even if that means only using 8gb on a 50gb bluray disc.
thier opinion is invalid.
exclusives are the real games that use as much as the platform allows or at least try to push the envelope
& set trends. That is what gamers make a investment on. Knowing that bigger & better is the future & enjoying
the ride!
Xbox360 has come & gone. Its obvious the box has hit the limit & exausted its line up in 2007. Digital distribution is now & ps3 home online isnt just a bunch of menus, its a hd 3d hangout.
I have this account & its my only one. There is no need to create another because the truth always shines through.
don't believe me? Then why is ps3 selling at a faster rate than xbox360 with no comp for a whole year? At a higher pricepoint too!
its bluray! U better believe it!
year 2 is definatly about the ps3 software & all xbox360 has is a bunch of excuses & a install base that is depressed
& bored.
Say goodbye to your install base!
