Sony: We Want Sackboy To Be Huge On PS3

Pop quiz, hotshot. When you think of PS3 do think of Sackboy?

Well...you probably don't yet, considering LittleBigPlanet has been delayed many a time, causing more heartbreak than this writer would care to recollect.

But the title is supposedly coming out this October. And if Sony has their way, Sackboy, the title's star, will be huge.

"We want 'LittleBigPlanet' to lead the charge into a new genre of gaming and turn Sackboy into the next emblematic character for the PS3," said Sony product marketing manager Mark Valledor in an interview with Ad Age.

"We have coined 2008 'the year of the PS3' and are confident that with the launch of "LittleBigPlanet," we will continue to see the momentum build throughout the end of this year and on to the next. ... This is a very big title for us."

Just keep LBP on schedule this time, Sony. That's all we ask.

I don't see why Sackboy can't be big, I mean you can customize sackboy into most iconic video game characters. Now that I think about it doesn't even have to be from a video game, you can have your sackboy look like a character from a movie or comic book.

If the game is as fun as it looks then Sackboy is going to be big and depending on Sony's Marketing Sackboy can be even bigger.

I also think Sony wants everyone to get into Sackboy but pictures with Sackboy pissing on xbox live isn't helping his image.

Sackboy is by far the most perfect console mascot ever.

He is simple, cute, and recognizable in his plainest form, and still simple, cute and recognizable when customized to look like any of the other countless characters that are typically or always recognized as Sony characters. He can play the part of a Helghast, or Ratchet, or Solid Snake, or whatever else they want him to be. It's a great creation.

I can also see the potential of this franchise getting a Kids TV show.
I seriously look forward to the advertising campaign of the game, if done right; Its GOING to be huge. A sleeper hit or a new IP and developer, something we haven't seen for a LONG time.
I can already imagine small children tugging on parents clothing when they see an advert of this at a bus stop, not many games do that.

I'm just hoping that Japan hops aboard LittleBigPlanet because the only main games that the Japanese get all over is JRPG's and games developed by Japanese studios... I just wish that they would learn to embrace different genres of games on the PS3. LittleBigPlanet is a much different kind of game and I think that there should be a lot of interest in LBP from the Japanese, Sony just has to market the game heavily over there.... if LBP doesn't spark the interest in Japanese gamers, then I guess we'll have to wait until those Final Fantasy Advent Children PS3 bundles to be released in March 2009 before the next explosion in PS3 sales begins in the Far East.

Not trying to be argumentative here, because I do understand you're saying "Main Games" and it's true that the big sellers over there are JRPG's.

I'd just say that Japan's videogame taste is very diverse. Just because they don't like a lot of ours doesn't mean that there isn't a extremely diverse, strange and interesting market in Japan. So, if LBP faces the hurdle of going from a large niche title to a huge mainstream success in Japan, that's not any different than in the Americas or Europe.

We tend to have a couple of genres that sell fabulously and then the other stuff as well.

Sony have a huge mascot potential here.

Kratos,Crash Bandicoot and Solid Snake are all well and good but 'Sackboy' has something about him that i strongly believe will appeal to the massess.

Hardcore gamers will like the game because of the level builder.

The casuals will like it because of its cuteness and a character they can warm to.

If Sony go crazy on the marketing then i think this could be in the top 10 sellers this christmas across all platforms.

they will start marketing this game next month and build up the momentum for it.. This game has the potential of being the next Mario Brothers game.. It should be huge.. I would start on disney channel and nickoloden or however you spell that crap for the little kids.. lol.. You know what else would be good for the adults.. Have a commerical with little sackboy football players during a football game.. Have like a football level that would be perfect right now.. When I first saw the GDC trailer I was hooked. Originally it was supposed to be a PSN title and after the reaction it got, Sony decided to take this to the hilt. Now we have respawn points, deaths, fire and ice tiles, bosses, three types of enemy AI to use, and 50+ levels created by MM. I hate delays as much as the next guy but how can I b!tch when I can see the improvements on a regular basis.

i still don't see the need to buy a ps3, but this game is trying something new.... so i'll wait for reviews and the buzz on the internet to see how it all pans out. Maybe this (if it turns out to be a AAA) plus KZ2 (if it doesn't bomb like the first one) would justify a ps3 purchase for me. Because i know GT5 will be released too........ one day.

I was in gamestop today and I noticed Banjo is going to sell for $39... as another game aimed at the casual... and now at that price....this seems like LBP biggest competitor this holiday season.

Think of it, when you talk to your parents or an adult about video games whats the first thing they respond back to you. Its usually Mario. Thats what sackboy is going to become, the new Mario. So give it about 1-2 years when you ask your parents about video games there going to say sackboy, or littlebigplanet. Its time for a new mascot in video games. Mario came at a time when there were no mascots. It will take more than two years to replace him. Hell even after 2 gens of Sony dominance some old people still call every game system a Nintendo. Also because he can be changed, there is no set sack boy that everyone will grow up seeing. He'll be MC in one level,Spiderman in another, and on and on. Never really getting an identity of his own or personality of his own, plus this is his only game so far. If its as diverse, and versatile as they claim I see now reason to ever release a LBP2.

about Little Big Planet being pushed to October.

the game was showcased at GDC 2007. the game is releasing a year and half later.

considering the scope and scale of this game, i'd have been worried if it released in early 2007, in an incomplete or buggy form.

at least we know that when the game does release at the end of October, it will be a polished, robust title, more than worth the $60 we will pay for it.

delays are only worthless when the game isn't improved due to it (see, Haze, and GTAIV; although i enjoyed both titles, especially GTAIV).

i think Sackboy has the potential to a new icon in gaming.

he has that look that makes people say "Awww" (i showed my fiance and my roommate the "Dream" trailer for LBP, and they thought it was adorable), and the customizability of the characters in the game SCREAM "cha-ching!" in relation to selling Sackboys at retail outlets like Target and Walmart (in the US), with a plethora of clothing accessories for young kids and collectors to gobble up.

i wouldn't be surprised to see an animated series focusing on the Sackboys and Sackgirls a la most 80's animated kids cartoons.

the game, in terms of Sackboy mass market, are only the entry point. the character itself is easily marketed through other mediums, from cards, towels, bedsheets, and like i said above, cartoons.

personally, all i care about is the game, though i admit, in the most manliest of ways possible, that i'd love to have a Sackboy plushie. and in order to save what's left of my "Man Card Status," i'd like to have an actual Kratos and Nariko Sackboy and Sackgirl plushie too.

this game has captured the hearts and minds of the gaming community and press in a way we haven't seen since the Wii stole everyone's thunder at E3 2006 and 2007.

Sony needs to pimp this b*tch as much as possible. they need commercials on TV and in Theaters. they need billboards, posters, sides of buses, etc, in order to get people to stop and pay attention. and the TV and Theater ads REALLY need to stress that this game is about playing levels, creating levels, and sharing the levels with people online. it will ring true with those many creative gamers out there that have always wanted a hand in design, but didn't have the programming knowledge, and it will ring true to those gamers out there that don't want to create games, but love platforming (among other things).

If Sony markets this right the sales are going to be ridiculous. Sackboy is already becoming an industry icon and its already highly anticipated.
