Study Finds Parents More Concerned About Video Games Than Alcohol and Porn

According to parental guidance organization What They Play, recent polls conducted on 3,000 respondents in two separate polls concluded that drinking beer and watching pornography were less objectionable activities for children than playing certain video games.

Nearly 3,000 respondents in two separate What They Play polls concluded that drinking beer and watching pornography were less objectionable activities for children than playing certain video games. Further, viewing violence was more acceptable than seeing content involving sex and sexuality within games.

"These poll results demonstrate that parents are as apprehensive about their children's media diets as they are about traditional social issues such as alcohol, drugs, violence and sex," says John Davison, president of What They Like, Inc. "When it comes to video games, parents should know that What They Play is a resource that helps demystify one of the most popular – and challenging – forms of entertainment their kids are into."

"Although these findings seem surprising at first, they hint at fears parents have about video games," says Cheryl K. Olson, Sc.D., co-author of Grand Theft Childhood. "To some parents, video games are full of unknowable dangers. While researching for Grand Theft Childhood, parents we spoke with in focus groups often bemoaned the fact that they didn't know how to use game controls - and felt unequipped to supervise or limit video game play. Of course, parents don't want their children drinking alcohol, but that's a more familiar risk."

All parents have to do is follow the ESRB rating guidelines and their kids will be fine. People wouldn't let their 10 year old see an R-rated movie but happily buy Junior GTA 4. The tools are there, parents just have to care enough to educate themselves and follow through.

Soon parents will give thier kids guns and a bag of drugs so they can do something outside instead of playing violent and self-destructive video games inside.

f*cking morons...

You never see the headline "Little Timmy saved by video games"
Instead of little timmy being run over by a drunk driver, he quietly sat at home playing GTA IV infront of he's tv. yay!

1.3 - Agree... it is up to parents what their kids play (at least in home)
BUT, what comes to alcohol and porn, that is just basic ingredients for proper youth...so yep, video games = more lethal.

why?... well porn and alcohol has existed pretty much always, video games aren't, so it must be video games that causes all the problems ;)

1.4 - Unknowable dangers?
Watch your kids play the games your worried about for ten minutes. Watch the content in the game and how the kid reacts. If they are only 8 and shooting innocent people in a game as they laugh their head off, you might want to take the game away from them.

This makes me want to cry. It's practically a guarantee that these parents have never once played anything in their life.

3 - A good parent worries about both, all and everything
As a parent you can only do so much but we are at the mercy of their (our kids) peers and just hope our kids make wise decisions. The problem is most parents today let gaming consoles, tv, computers, ipods, etc and so on babysit their kids just to keep them out of their hair.

You have to do your job as a parent to educate your kids and keep an open form of communication with them. Don't lecture or talk down to them. They will just end up doing the opposite of what you want to spite you and prove they are grown up.

I have one (possibly controversial) standing rule with my kids when it comes to getting into trouble. Call me before getting in the car with a person that is high on anything. Even if you yourself have been drinking or worse. I will come pick you up regardless of what time it is and I wont mention the incident again. I know that might not fly with some but I'd rather my kids come home safe then not at all.

So far I have never got that phone call and I am hoping I never will.

Parents need to stop their complaining and start taking an interest in what their kids are doing on a daily basis. Parenting starts in the home. If you are clueless or don't have the time to raise your children properly? They don't have them or quit complaining and putting the blame on others that they don't turn out the way you expected or say you yourself "raised them".

Nothing makes you grow old faster than having kids ;)

Hell when my son turns 14-15 I'm gonna secretly put porn on his PC and plant some Playboys in there so I can instigate a conversation. (just kidding...or am I?)

Parents can try and get involved in their kids lives, monitoring whether or not they're doing drugs, drinking or anything, and they may think they know what their child does or doesn't do. But kids are going to lie to them, drink or drug somewhere else. A parent tries to set rules, but rebellious teens will not follow, no matter how strict a parent may be. It was, is, and will continue to be a never ending struggle between parents and kids. All parents believe their kid to be a saint, which is just not the case.

I'm speaking about American families, I don't know how it might be somewhere else. Our society is FUBAR

somedays i will start with porn then move to gaming with a couple beers

Then sometimes i will start with games and move to porn and have a couple beers

If i had kids i would make them stick with games and beer till they are old enough to ask me about the birds and the bees

then its porn for the little ones

yea, as a brasilian i can say that here is no diferent at all, you can go and kill someone outside, but explode some heads on RE4? no way!

parents need to understand the entire thing, seeing a game for 5 minutes will not give you the entire experience, i think they need first to play games, and then we can talk about worring...

smoking marijuana (49%) and playing the video game Grand Theft Auto (19%), than watching pornography (16%) and drinking beer (14%).

You would think it would be beer because teenagers prefer to get drunk. What are these parents thinking? Who cares about a video game more than porn and beer? But 49% marijuana that's just stupid. If they did that they would most likely be lying down in the house laughing their heads off in no danger whatsoever.

This shows you what the media is pushing hardcore nowadays.

Mass media has the power to make ignorant parents fear whatever it wants them to, and right now its videogames.

Alcohol, Drugs,Video Games...

Two of these can kill you can you guess which?

I don't see the hype in Video Games being as bad as people claim I've been a gamer since birth but my addiction is under control.

Because it's easier to blame Video Games.

When they blame it on Alcohol or Drugs, there's too much work put into stopping it. So they start blaming video games and make themselves feel like they've made a difference for their kids.

Unfortunately, video games have a bad stigma in our society. The older generation views video games for young kids as something that is rotting their brain.

"Are you playing video games again?"
"All he does is play video games"
"Stop playing video games, go watch TV or something"

Even my wife say video games cause my kids to have short attention spans... she's just parroting what you hear and read about in the media.

When parents get down on teens, the argument is they are shooting, killing, etc on videogames and that can only be bad for their psyche and disposition.

"How can you expect him to act normally when he is killing people all day in video games?"

Sex and alcohol, the older generation understands. Video games they are totally clueless and take their cues from the media and the general stigma attached to video games which is never a good thing.

Unforunately the parents and media are correct. Video games makes people bad.

I have something to confess. I've been playing Super Mario Brothers when I was a kid and now I'm seriously demented.

I go outside, and jump on giant koombas. I know, they didn't even do anything to me! But I just have to jump on their heads and get a +1 above my head. I know, it's sick.

Then I would go out and travel to other places going through a giant green sewage pipe. Ahhh man the thrill of going through the pipe is too good. Everytime I do it, it makes a sound that I need to just keep hearing and hearing.

And the most sickest part in my confession. I went and ate a shining star that was minding it's own business. I was looting the town running around glowing and everybody I touched would immediately explode.

lol

ok ok I'm done. I can just imagine those "go play a real instrument, not fake guitar hero" people will get mad off my post. Why play super marios when you can save a pink princess and shoot fireballs after eating shrooms in real life?

12 - I think
parents are just not use to this whole video game craze and are still having a hard time to undrstand the ESRB.

I find it funny some people want to get rid of violent video games when all they have to do is follow the ESRB.

13 - It's probably because parents watch a lot of porn while drinking alcohol...
Especially because they're probably stuck in a loveless marrage.

Seriously, alcohol kills thousands of kids every year. All type of injuries and deaths are alcohol related. Porn, well... that is just penis abuse I guess.

This is the same crap with weed. EVERYONE smokes it, but god forbid anyone admit it in public. I've never heard of anyone crashing head on because of weed. I've never heard of a man beating his wife because he was high. All these activites require movement... and from what I've seen pot smokers move very little.
