The Xbox 360 'Red Ring of Death' Apology Manual

The MinusWorld writes:

"Ah, the ill-fated Xbox 360 Red Ring of Death, how we fear thy ways. After all, with a 16% failure rate, it could happen to anyone. For some of us, it already has. Multiple times. And as much as we love spending a half hour coaxing Microsoft's customer service into sending us a "coffin" (the sad cardboard box used to mail back your deceased console) only to receive yet another broken replacement, sometimes its easier to just give up. Well then, the least that Microsoft could do is give us a few ideas of what to do with this giant, expired paperweight of failure. That's why we propose the official Red Ring of Death Apology Manual, printed and paid for by Microsoft themselves, of course. Besides, what else are you gonna do with the damn thing?"

1.5 - Yeah, my new 360...
Has not gotten the famed RROD... instead, it has been giving me the disc read error. Yay for MS and their warranty on the RROD and not all of the other issue the crap-box 360 has. Great games but hear me folks, the console hardware is the worst I have ever seen and since I have been gaming since 1981, I can speak with all honesty.

Wow Excalibur got 41 disagrees and zero agrees! I think the RROD problem is largely gone. I bought one last November and haven't had one issue and believe me I use it a lot.

I'm going to give you one agree....

So it's 16% now?

Ha ha, that world's saddest kite had me laughing may ass off. And no, the problem hasn't been fixed until every single defective design has been removed from circulation. Considering that over half the 360's still sport the original design that isn't happening soon. Wait until this fall when the first of the 3 year warranties begin to expire. There will be some mad people this coming season. All in time for the busiest part of the gaming year. Ouch.

I had 3 so far. The second was the refurb and right out of the box I plugged it up and it was dead. My 4th 360, a HALO edition has hard locked on me twice in the past month or so. I had to unplug it to shut it off.

There are two kinds of 360 owners in this world. Those that have had a RROD and those that are going to have a RROD.

"I had 3 so far...My 4th 360, a HALO edition...

Wait, I thought you said you had three so far. Yet your fourth was a halo edition.

Perhaps you meant you had 3 RROD's so far and not 360s?

Funny, this subject always seems to be a crowd pleaser for the PS3 fan.

Juuken's subject was the dreaded RROD and not 360s, therefore I am grammatically correct. I said I have had 3 so far - as in 3 RRODs. Then I clearly state "My 4th 360, a HALO edition..." There was a period before "My" That does have a meaning in grammar. Pretty simple to grasp really.

But an attempt at correction - where none was needed - wasn't your goal now was it. With that I am out of this side of the thread.

8 - if MS renews its warranty
then you can no longer say its been fixxed!

if they dont and things start to break and ppl are paying 160-180 bucks to get a 3 year old machine fixxed then it will be a big test for the 360

PS3 is adding some good games over the next 4-6 months

I seriously expect this to be a factor come November 22nd. I say that because the first warranties begin to expire then and I think there will be more than a few people who, upon their next dead 360 just decide to chuck it and go the PS3 route. With Bluray expanding it's market, some truly klller titles out for the PS3 and major names still coming - like Killzone 2 - I expect we will see rollover numbers added to the PS3.

It is also my prediction, and people are welcome to hold me to it that the PS3 will be the big entertainment gadget to buy this Christmas. I think with the Bluray/HD market getting bigger, and with gaming having gone mainstream, it will be the PS3, not the Wii that is the ticket this December.

The Xbox 360's hardware problems is making people that already have 360's to buy new ones every time their old one bricks. The reason why I brought this up is because I seriously wonder how many Xbox 360's have REALLY been sold because there have been people that have been through 3 or more 360's and they may have bought a new one once Microsoft introduced another newer chip in the 360 to lower the failure rate and it's making Xbox 360 sales look higher than they really are.

I would say that only around 16 million-18 million 360's have really been bought people that have bought their first 360 because the other 2-4 million of the sales are probably just from people that already had a 360 that bought a new one after their first one bricked or bought yet another 360 when Microsoft introduced a newer chip for it.

With a defect rate so high, Microsoft should have had a recall on the Xbox 360's and shouldn't have even sold them in stores anymore until they fixed the RROD problem.

The real reason MS was willing to shell out a billion dollars in warranties is they saw the handwriting on the wall. The handwriting was the first cases for investigation concerning 360 failures had already reached the FTC.

The BBB is fine for local small businesses but useless otherwise. This is where the CPA - the Consumer Protection Agency, part of the FTC - the Federal Trade Commission comes in. We all know how much the government loves Microsoft...not. They were looking at a mandatory recall of EVERY Xbox 360. Before that happened they extended the warranty.

"The Xbox 360's hardware problems is making people that already have 360's to buy new ones every time their old one bricks."

Nope. They just return them and get them fixed for free. There's a 3 year warranty against any hardware related faults you know.

Stop making things up.

9.3 - To be fair jenzo
I know a few people who just couldn't wait for the fixed machine to arrive so they purchased the newer 1. Of course they try and sell the refurb on though which still counts as a sale don't get me wrong but many couldn't be sold as the price of a 360 was relatively cheap in the first place so people were put off. This happened way more before the warranty extension. Its going to be interesting to see what happens when the extension is up.

10 - 16%?
Even though that is very high for CE standards, I hate how people try sneaking around random stats and expect people to believe them. Last time I recalled them stating it was 33%, and before that it was 50%... but hey, now I'm making that up, huh? Somehow the fanboys are managing to downplay the problem. I am on my fourth 360 (for now), and many have gone through way more than two, so the problem is not just "how likely is it", but also "how many are you expected to go through". It's not like once it happens it never happens again. I'd say the average is 3 (i.e. 2 failures), including those that claim that "WE ARE STILL ON 360 LAUNCH DAY LOL".

The really funny thing is M$ admitted about a year and a half ago that ALL 360 ARE PRONE TO FAILURE AND ARE DEFECTIVE. Then later they said with the revised MB (twice since then) they would not RROD but they continue to do so! Which means AGAIN that ALL 360 ARE PRONE TO FAILURE AND ARE DEFECTIVE....and for those who will disagree (and you know certain types will) and say there is no proof ~ here you go

http://www.fastsilicon.com/...

http://digg.com/gaming_news...

Oh and one more thing, here is my proof that I am not a fanboy as I own a 360 that RROD'ed on me TWICE. I have the right to complain about a defective product that isn't worth owning. Thankfully I did not spend my hard earned money on something of such unreliable quality.
