Fun vs Reality: How Real Do You Want Your Gaming?

The trend in gaming as of late has been a push towards "reality". Games like COD, Battlefield, and SOCOM all boast military advisors on staff, with a focus on making the game experience as "realistic" as possible.

The obsession with reality doesn't end there, and its relation to a game's overall fun factor, got me thinking - just how real do we want things, and at what point does reality cause a game to no longer be fun?

well i blive we can have both,cod4 has alerday proven that. its real with the bullet penertation and the guns are almost as accurate as there real life guns but the game is still fun.

cod is realistic in graphics only

but the gameplay is arcady,fast,and very very fun(better graphics makes elevates the already fantastic gameplay to a new heights,more cinematic)

cod was not a realistic game

if cod is a realistic one it would be boring

developers, do realism only in graphics,gameplay and graphics are totally different things,gameplay is the skull of the game,advanced graphics just make it better,whether the gameplay is arcady,fun amazing,or realistic

just separte between gameplay and graphics

see,burnout paradise has realistic graphics,but you can't say it is a realistic game like forza

rockstar north ruined gta a bit cause they make it realistic(gameplay wise)

conclusion:all I want is a fun game with high tech graphics that suits the game wether it's uncharted,mario,zelda,ratchet and clank or mgs4

just do your art style with HIGH TECH

i like gta4 cause its more realistic..

uncharted is pretty realistic using the 4D graphics. and it accounts for the bullet in the chamber when you reload (with out emptying the clip)

cod4 was realistic to an extent... but for the most part it was noob arcady (but fun too)

socom is my favorite online game. HoO RAH!!

motorstorm & MGS4 are my favorite ps3 games right now, i havent played alot of them yet so my list is subject to change : )

7 - Real is better IMO

more players on the battlefield is real.
(256/MAG! i hate when people say more players on the battlefield isn't better for gaming. imagine HALO 60 players online.....;)
NO radar is real. (radar ruins games, especially online)
camoflage is real.
(Red, Green, Blue, Orange space marines wouldn't exist.)
element of surprise is real (no LOUD chainsaw bayonetts!)

KILLZONE2 is the most REALISTIC FPS i've ever seen.
(at least the best collision detection to date...can't wait.)

Till then SOCOM is real enough...VIVA LA RESISTANCE....and LBP!

ZIPPER INT. are great, they single handedly made the PS2 online very respectable with the SOCOM franchise. 32 players online on the ps2 was great for many years, still is. 360 games barely reach 32 players and it supposed to have "the best" online service. (Frontlines50 players1board/battlefield24)
in short, i'm sure ZIPPER will figure something out...but your right, i've spent a lot of time on SOCOM I-III waiting to play, so they better.

8 - Killzone 2 "REAL".

Killzone maintains a really realistic FPS feeling, yet maintains the fun factor that keeps it from bordering Tactical FPS. Down the list...

Realistic weaponry (no lasers or plasma)
Realistic Camera movement and shake.
Being able to see your own legs. (A MUST)
Realistic Weapon reloading. (The camera shifts attention to the gun)
Attention to detail (Lighting, Dirt, Physics)
Model meshes with environment perfectly. (Think MGS4)
Art Direction (gritty war-torn atmosphere)
Voice Acting (not over the top Haze, but profane is a MUST)
Rebounding Flexible Health bars(Not CoD4, more like Halo)
Graphics are where they're suppose to be (Shadows are everywhere, grass interfaces with model)
Rain Effects (REAL Rain, think TimeShift)
Snow Effects (MGS4 like, Resistence: FoM like)
GodRays (Think Crysis, Red Steel)
Lighting (Think Killzone 2)
Better Physics Dolls (Think Killzone 2, NOT Halo 3)

I think that's my ideal list right there.

I had to laugh about the leg part! I think it's specific for this topic! I bought Co$ for after I read several reviews and people told me how awesome the gameplay and graphic was! I agreed with both but I was kinda disappointed during the car ride at the beginning! I can look around but can never see my own legs or reflections or even my own body leaning on the couch!

9 - take away the war from the videogames.

Mario and Zelda is fantasy and they are much much better games than those millitary crap games. I would like to see real graphics in games like NHL and other sport games but Fable, Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy I would like to see in a more fantasy looking graphic BUT ofcourse I would like to see more and more improvments in the visual way even for fantasy games.

Millitary, FPS games can go to heck!! I am so sick of those and they are not even funny games, they are millitary training accesory games.

I personally dont like the direction a lot of game companies are taking in a graphics perspective. All the super realistic FPS's coming out dont appeal to me. Its a overrated, saturated, dull genre that gets all this attention for just having guns and good graphics. COD 4, Killzone 2, RFOM 2, MAG, Gears 2, all these super realistic graphics are cool to look at but fail in comparison to games with far better art style. For instance Street Fighter 4, Metroid Prime 3, Final Fantasy 13, Mario Galaxy, No More Heroes, Viewtiful Joe, Star Wars the force unleashed, and the new Prince of Persia not only have great graphics but a sense of style that really attracts you to the game. Sorry for ranting on but I don't know what peoples infatuation on this site with FPS is? People on this site blast casuals for buying mini-game collections well im going to blast people for buying all of the boring played out FPS just cause they have good graphics and online modes. Its been 10 plus years since GoldenEye and there still hasnt been a shooter that set a standard for the genre in whole.(No Fanboys Halo doesnt Count. Good game but did nothing but add online and lan play). We'll see how MAG turns out but untill then i'll skip out on the countless dual analog snore fest which most FPS are. The Prince, Star Wars, Kid Icaris, Madworld, and RE5 for me.

I agree with you. I just wish more devs took the time to make things more stylized and less "real". I had an art teacher in school that told me if I wanted something to look real I would take a picture, and I want to draw something I am going to take creative liberties to make it look different.

I think the part about wow was more about the jobs and things you have to do in the game to progress your character being too tedious and mimicking reality, not necessarily that the game looked real.
