1 - NINTENDO HAVE DONE REALLY WELL
do i see the wii as a agames machine?..no
i see it as a device that has captured the spirit of casual gaming

but to claim nintendo will dethrone sony is jumping the gun considering the ps3 is not even two years old in europe.

But sony will still remain the console maker with the most consoles in peoples homes. PS2 and the PS3. But for profit wise right now, hats off to the Wii and DS.

1.3 - Don't worry
Once Digital Transition hits, the PS3's price drops, and more games are released, everyone will be wanting a PS3.

Everyone will experience High Definition and will not want to go back to Standard 480 resolutions and be poised to buy a PLAYSTATION®3 for Blu-ray playback.

Also, once the spread of genres in the PS3's library is extended, everyone will enjoy the games, including RPG, Shooters, Puzzles, Action, Adventure.

But right now, the Wii is only selling well because of price, but does anyone really buy games? Nope, everyone likes them for Wii Sports and Wii Play, and then after that, it's untouched until friends come over.

Could you please enlighten us on why you do not think the Wii is a game machine........was the Atari a game machine? What do you think of games like Time Crisis and Virtua Cop that are played on "game machines"?

To be gaming king you need to make a game system. Once DVD is gone even families will realize that game system + blu ray = awsome deal. Who the hell gives the award and when is it on TV? Maybe ill watch this time >.> if there is no throne you cant dethrone anyone. Who the hell keeps approving stories like this anyhow there was story like this yesterday but it was playing the numbers game there is no need for duplicate stories.

2 - same stupid lack of common sense.. for the wii to dethrone sony, it needs to surpass the PS2
not only in sales but in games... we all know the difference in games between the wii and ps2..

the ps2 has an overwhelming library or great games while the wii has like 5.... everything else is garbage...

i'll be the first one to admit when the wii sells as much as the ps2 and it has games that i truly want to play... as of now.. the wii is has nothing... to even claim to be king.

3 - Don't worry folks, Sony will counter and you know how
Don't forget about that new motion-controller Sony is working on....we all know they've already planned to counter the Wii's crowd. Sony will start focusing more on those "stupid fun" games, just like the wii knows how to do it, but of course in 720p / 1080p.

But Sony's got to move its arse pretty fast, because gosh they're slow! (releasing a bloody clock a year and a half after the console was released is...well...SODDING SLOW!)

I think its not possible at all. Wii apeals to casual gaming and the PS3 appeals to Hardcore gaming. 2 different marketting approaches. If anything (if not yet also) the Xbox 360 will dethrone Sony, which it already appears they are doing so.

by being outsold this year, and selling less on a yearly basis which is actually a proven fact?

why bring 360 into a thread which didnt require it?

It's amazing how much fight these companies have, who thought nintendo would be on top? I didn't even know...after I brought my wii to the dorms at school, 8-10 people I know have wiis now. It's crazy. I think sony can pull it off if they find somewhat different offerings that casuals and core players can play together. Little Big Planet is a good start.

Let's just say that sometimes human behavior is a bigger factor in play than numbers. Nintendo was trying to get rid of the psychological mindset that games are only for people like us. Now people can have fun. :)

6 - Nintendo
shouldn't even be qualified in the console wars. They are approaching a different market, a market that sees video games as just another activity. Not to mention how cheap the console is.

6.1 - so true
but this is where many people get it confused. i can accept the casual fan of gaming to think nintendo is back on top. but alot of this comes from the so called experts of the field, and thats what confuses me. the wii is barely even on par with xbox 1 and ps2 in terms of power. and no where near ps2's library. nintendo knows they lost almost everything to sony, so very reasonably they went in search of a new market(of suckers)to sell to.REAL gamers would NEVER have a wii as their only console. it will always be a 2nd or 3rd option at best regardless of how well it sells. in the GAMING world with real gamers, the wii is a gimmick but does still carry the nintendo name. and some day nintendo could re enter the gaming arena and bless us with some classic gaming again. till then its ps360 for me. with a small side of wii every once in a while.

7 - Let's have a three way..... (arguement)
Well, it was inevitable, but let's look at all three systems. This is all personal opinion, but I'd like for people to add to it. I feel that the Wii has sold so well because of many factors. Yes, it is very casual, and it has capitalized on this market. But also it's very user friendly. It appeals to loyal Nintendo fans for their Zelda, Mario, Metroid, etc titles. And it applies to the masses for it's casual pick-me-up and play titles. (Wii sports, anyone?).

Add to that the fact that it's the cheapest of the three and you have yourself a real contender. In this case, a leader.

Sony is for the very hardcore. It's obviously the most expensive and it's titles are more adult oriented. When we look at MGS4 and other titles on the system, we can see it's not for the average pick-me-up-and play gamer. Also you lose a lot of the casual gaming you'd have with the wii. I know a lot of parents that purchased a wii for their children for it's simplicity and style and at a 400+ price tag for PS3, it makes more sense to just throw down for a wii and not a PS3.

The 360 shares a lot of simliarities with the PS3. It's more hardcore and more expensive. It also has the Halo fanbase. With FFXIII coming it's way, it will have the most RPGs over any other system as of right now. It's been out longer than the PS3 and it has a good library of titles out currently as well.

Back on direct topic: I feel that Nintendo will not pull ahead of Sony. Sony has a great lineup coming its way soon. The sales of the PS2 and PSP is what has kept Sony in the lead and with these new titles soon to release, the PS3 can only take off. It will stay ahead, but by how much, I'm not certain.

Without writting a huge responce I must just point out at least two glaringly wrong statements in your post!

The Wii is not the cheapest console. Since the price cuts happened in europe early this year, you can pick up a 360 arcade pack for less than the cost of a Wii. The 360 is the cheapest console.

Sony - very hardcore? Hardly! They occupy the middle ground, and that will become ever more apparent as the titles flow. Titles like Eye Toy, singstar and Buzz practically defined the casual gaming world until Nintendo re-invented it, and the platform specific PSN games have a lot of titles with really wide appeal too.You could see Microsoft desperately rushing out copies of these titles (you're in the moveies, lips, scene it) to try and grab some of that 'middle ground' back.

The casual demographic market is so large, that its likely Nintendo will continue to dominate in terms of hardware units shipped. It will be interesting to see if that momentum continues with software sales, which are slightly less steallar.

Yes, I see what you mean. I, myself, don't find myself dropping a lot of money on casual PS3 games (singstar, buzz) so I almost completely forgot about them. The closest to causual games that I play are those on the PSN (PJ Monsters, Eden, SSHD).

Good post, good show.

7.4 - One big thing to mention
I think what is very important to realize the HDTV component in all this. Last I checked there is only about 25% penetration in the US. So it makes more sence to buy the wii if you don't have an HD TV. When HD becomes more of the standard then you will see the real battle between PS3 and 360. wii will be the console in the kids bedroom on the 20 inch standard tv with 5 party games.

Personally I have my must buy list for the fall which includes 15 games before X-mas and 0 are for my Wii. thanks Reggie

8 - in what sense???
it's gonna be ahead in sales for a while but that is just bound to happen because its cheaper...

but this system will always have people that love it no matter what happens people will pay to fix whatever problems it might have because people like certain systems...

through red and yellow lights people stick with there console of choice...

No it's not, because the iPhone is technically advanced, henced "Advances foward" technologically. Makes sense?

To keep it simple, your analogy sucks.

However the Wii obviously doesn't push anything on the presentation front, but they did advance the way people think of video games. And come on HD, you have to give them credit for that.

But digging into the future, who says they won't come out with an HD Wii? The excuse of poor graphics won't hold water anymore. The last straw would be a solid online network like PSN or as great as XBL.

The iPhone is only advanced in the sense that it has a multitouch screen. It sells on gimmick. It's missing out on a lot of key features that even budget cell phones have standard. It also has a nice web browser but phone functionality is first when I buy a cell phone.

My analogy is fine. The Wii pushes videogame usability just like the iPhone pushes cellphone usability. The Wii = motion sensing, iPhone = touch interaction.

The PS3 and the 360 play just like consoles have played for more than 20 years. HD graphics don't change the way the user interacts with the games. Prettier to look at but underneath that the way we interact with the games has not changed.

If you are too narrow minded to see past graphics that's your problem, not mine.

Btw, I prefer the PS3 and the 360 over the Wii.

@jrome - Totally agree, it's nothing more than a flashy gadget.

Dethrone?

Why does everything have to be a contest. Yes they compete for the support of consumers to their product. Last time I checked that is healthy buisness.

Maybe someone should step up and say that when a person "wins" the game is over. That's it. No more. There is no finish line in this "war" there is only compition.

12 - Hmmmm...
Let me add a question to the mix.....at this current time, if we were to think about next generation consoles.......what company would probably garner greater attention and interest? I would bet on Nintendo for the simple fact that people will want to know how Nintendo follows up with the Wii. This reminds me of the movie Gladiator...while he was not necessarily on the throne, having the hears of the fans made him greater...and in a since, the taking of power and perception was a dethroning.

13 - This is only the beginning
Eventually, we will be in a time where there won't be just one dominant console maker. Each company will have there own place in the market, and the playing field will be more level than in previous years.

Competition will be better, and is getting better, and will hopefully push Micro, Nintendo, and Sony to put out even better products and games to really set themselves apart. Which will be a win for everyone.

LOL@ anyone who thinks SOny is still King. NIntendo owns the Market right now and has for 2 years with the Wii and the DS. Sony's market share is nothing what it was 5 years ago. You kids can talk about the PS2 til the end of time when its convenient for you but when people bring up the PS2 libary and how full of crap it was, you guys think its not worth bringing up.. PS2 yesterdays news. If past accomplishemnts insure success then Nintendo never lost the crown to begin with.. oh but I bet you SOny fans will have issue with that. Its ok for you to say Sony is King based off past glory but dont let anyone say that about another company. Sony fans are getting more pathetic and desperate with every exclusive lost.

14.1 - You know.....
I'm sure everyone who owns a Wii, also owns a PS3 or 360 to go with it. Nintendo and Sony/Microsoft kinda have different objectives. I don't see why both Nintendo and/or Sony/Microsoft can't win 'together. I'm sure every gamer knows that the Wii is not for the avid gamer. The consumer base for casual gamers is incredibly higher compared to avid gamers, so sales will make a difference and consoles in this gen will appeal to different kinds of gamers.

Also, although you're masking it behind the word "fan"

Only a 'Fan'boy calls another person a 'Fan'boy" - no need to use condescending tone to mask your bias. You're just as bad as any of us.

15 - PSWii Owner here.
I can see how this article could predict such a thing. However one thing I saw that they never mentioned was how 'cheap the consumer is'. All they talk about is movies and statistics, by which in this game of business is irrelevant and a total waste of words and space. The end result is that people will buy the system that's teh cheapest and the biggest bang for the buck. The Wii is pretty damn cheap, and therefore people will flock to it. The Wii also is backwards compatible with 100% of Gamecube games, controllers, and memory cards; a bigger reason why the upgrade won't be costing migrating GC owners hundreds to replace their accessories. However, strictly speaking from a gamer's perspective, they'll be a time where casual-turned avid gamers will realize that Nintendo's games just don't provide the high-def excitement the other consoles provide. That's the reason I have both the PS3 & Wii now.

If Nintendo plays its cards right with Wii-Motion Plus, and every single developer hops on the bandwagon, then that's probably one prediction that might keep all the gameplay fresh. Because when you stop and think about. Most Wii games are either this.

"wiggle"
"Waggle"
"Shake"
"Thrust"

I'm sure people bought Wii-Sports because they actually thought they were controlling the tennis player, when it reality, it was all a set of pre-rendered motions. Wii-Motion Plus is Nintendo's big trump card at getting the avid gamers into the void. Although the business analysis looks good on paper for Nintendo; you cannot deny that casual gamers also look for the next "big thing". People don't buy the cheapest car; they buy the most cost-effective one with great gas mileage.

people always mention the ps2 to 'back up' the sony is king argument, but if thats the case then you would have to take the game boy and ds machines into account. nintendo win.

i don't think nintendo will get the credit they deserve for the wii and titles like wii sport and wii fit until a few years time. they are taking gaming into a new era, sure it is 'basic' right now but this is the template that future games will be built on. first wii motion plus, then etc etc.

people are just too short sighted to see the importance of the wii. thank you nintendo for moving things foward!

23 - motion control wins
motion control has captured millions of peoples imagination (if wii sales are anything to go by.) metroid prime 3 showed that motion control can be incorporated into 'serious games,' and mario kart (although silly) showed what else can be done. just imagine motion plus. just use your imagination.

nintendo took a massive gamble and it paid off, they should be given credit for that. there will always be a place for the traditional control method but i think the motion control direction is more exciting (the potential).

I don't care who is winning but the hardcore gamers have to buy more games seriously. I mean the financial report for the big companies reads like an HD gaming blood bath. Take two almost made nothing off GTA4 due to them backing other games that flopped. I can understand MS and SONY loosing money but the publisher should be sitting pretty right now. As much hype about this is the PS3's year I'm not seeing the game sales. All I here is a bunch of waiting for the next big thing then hardly any of you buy it even though it is rated as a prefect game. Lots of games are coming out but I only here you guys talking about games that will not come out till spring.

I mean the hardcore is bashing the hell out of the casual but they don't even care and while the hardcore are bashing they are not putting their money where their mouth is. PS3 sales should not be behind the Wii at all. If 19 million hardcore gamers bought the PS3 then why aren't the prefect games with 10 reach 8 million in sales at least?

Let me just say the market will abandon you if you keep being picky. This is what happened to the 2d shooters, fighter, and lots of other game types from the 16bit age. People just got way to picky.
