Top 10: Guaranteed System Sellers

VideoGamer.com writes: "Sales are pretty much the be all and end all of a game's success. If a game sells well it's done well, if it fails miserably at retail it's done poorly. In our minds there's something more important than pure sales though. In this age where hardware sales seem to mean everything, a game that can sell systems is worth its weight in gold. With that in mind we've put together our Top 10: Guaranteed System Sellers. We've included any game on consoles or PC (something that'll make you upgrade) that has been announced, but shunned any game which is likely to primarily appeal to existing console owners. Games like Resistance 2 and Gears of War 2 will be massive, but we don't think they'll sell as many systems to new people as the games listed below."

Don't get me wrong, all of these games are going to be great, but we can see a shift that software no longer moves hardware for whatever reason. We saw this with HALO3 and GTA4, and we are seeing it with MGS4, say what you want about those games, but they were "big" games and they didn't have a long term impact on console sales.

The only game on that list that will have a MAJOR impact on console sales is FF13 and that will only be in JAPAN. When this game is released i guarantee you that PS3 will outsell wii on a weekly basis for an extended period of time!

1.1 - I disagree
And instead of just hitting disagree maybe a conversation can happen ;)

Anyway, I think those games are system sellers. I bought a 360 when Halo 3 came out because until Halo came out nothing on the 360 really peaked my interest. The same goes for MGS and GTA for many people I know (360 & PS3). And while your argument that they can't sell systems for a long period of time is true, these titles did spike system sales, which would mean to me that people bought the system for that game. That's a system seller in my book.

My other argument regarding your 'software doesn't move hardware' statement is this: Blu-ray. Had the PS3 not included it, not only would Blu-ray not be the standard, but the PS3 would have failed miserably. I don't know if you consider it software, but it definitely helped my decision in buying one once I got an HDTV.
