David Hayter: "This is Why I Don't Do Public Appearances"

Earlier in the week, drama unfolded on the Internet about Solid Snake voice actor, David Hayter, making some seemingly critical remarks about the Metal Gear Solid 4 storyline.

An article ran on 1UP last weekend, saying that Hayter was "frustrated at times with Metal Gear Solid series director Hideo Kojima's over-the-top scriptwriting and direction." The article goes on to say that Hayter was specifically critical of the way that the series wrapped up and the conclusion with Solid Snake's character.

Yesterday, Hayter posted on his IMDB (Internet Movie Database) page saying that "this is why I don't do public appearances."

i don't even know how you came to that conclusion. David Hayter is actually a really cool guy. If the media and stuff are going to spin what he says abit, don't blame that on him. After listening to him on the IGN Beyond podcast a few weeks ago, he is definately a pretty cool guy. He was talking about times he's used the Snake voice in real life. Its worth a listen

Kojima said the same thing when quoted by western presses, when he said he was "disappointed" in the game because of PS3 limitations. The media blew it far out of proportion and he confirmed that he was pleased with how MGS4 turned out. Yet the overly sensational media ran with it, and poised it like he didn't like the PS3. Kojima said that he wanted to do more but the system wasn't capable of delivering the exact experience that he wanted to present. Coming from Kojima, a professed perfectionist, his words published in media shouldn't be taken too much to heart. David Hayter says one thing against MGS4 and the media runs with it to the complete maximum. He liked MGS4 and what it was, but the media once again runs with it. And he explains why he "doesn't do public appearances". I can't say I blame him. Kojima also said the same thing. Western media loves to run negative hype. Who can blame these artists/game makers for not wanting to provide quotes for mainstream media when all they do is spin their comments into hate?

shane kim could be replaced with any face of any organization and those guys have to sell what they represent and act like its crap dont stink. so he has to be an annoying retard. its his job. still doesnt excuse it though.
cliffyb has a huge ego and runs his mouth. he also wants to be called cliffyb. thats annoying all on its own.
uwe bowl runs his mouth and makes really bad video game movies. so yes he is annoying.
david hayter voices snake, writes decent movie scripts, and values his privacy. he doesnt run his mouth and would rather stay behind the scenes. that makes him cool not annoying.

I didn't find 1up's article to be bad at all. I think Hayter (hey that sounds like ...) is just doing some damage control. 1up's article did say Hayter heaped lavish praise on Kojima.

Anyways, I'm just playing MGS4 now, loving it. But a character can be pretty bad azz while the actor behind it is a douche. Look at Maverick in Top Gun. Bad azz! Best movie ever! Tom Cruise? Douche.

Not that I think this dude is one. Just saying it isn't outside the realm of possibility. Anyways, I think he made those comments, 1up reported it. If he felt his comments were misquoted, then say so. He didn't.

Oh, and Hayter is nowhere in the league of Uve, Cliffy, and Shane Kim.

How can you put Hayter in the same list as Uwe Boll?? Hayters talents go far beyond voice acting, he wrote the excellent screenplays for two of the best comic book movie adaptations of all time, X-Men 1 and 2. I totally agree with his take on the ending of MGS4, I felt it was a cop out too. I was so relieved when I heard he had the writing duties for the upcoming Watchmen movie, as were a lot of comic/movie fans.

I'm tired of hearing about this guy. DAMN! He was just a damn voice actor on the game. let it be. Everyday something is popping up about this guy. Yes he did the voice of one of the best damn games to come out this year. All i care about is the game not him. I'm really starting to lose respect for online journalists. I attended David Hayter's conference at AX, and the supposedly 'scandalous' remarks he made were actually stated in a humorous manner, and he stated that even though there were a few times where he didn't agree with some dialogue in a scene or whatnot (or possibly the alternate ending of MGS1 where two men ride off in the sunset; lot of laughs there), he highly respects Kojima as a writer and has actually learned a lot of storytelling techniques from Kojima over the past decade.
