Confessions of Female Developers

Since the beginning, the game industry's been about personalities. Richard Garriott. John Romero. Shigeru Miyamoto. Maybe because the medium itself can be so sterile and technical sometimes -- all ones and zeros, physics engines, inventories, and stat bars -- we gravitate toward the human faces for a dose of context and reality.

But what if the celebrity developer in question is a woman? Gender's still an incredibly thorny issue in the industry, and while game studios are hiring more women than ever, the male-to-female ratio is still markedly uneven. According to 2005 report by the International Game Developers Association, women represent just 11.5 percent of the game-development workforce.

But according to some prominent industry women, things aren't quite as bad as they seem. In fact, some say there's never been a better time to be a woman in game development.

Hmmm...none of whom were mentioned are actual 'code monkeys'. At least that's what I think of when I hear the word developer.

Jade Raymond holds a Bachelors of Science in computer science. In fact, she started as a programmer developing educational titles for IBM. Her first job in this industry involved programming game titles for Sony Online Entertainment.

Women get the easiest jobs in game development, like producer, and artist, and suchlike jobs instead of being the engineers or scientists behind the projects. Not to be disrespectful or patronizing, but why can't women do what the rest of us do if they want equality?

I hate it when companies actually look for diversity instead of looking into the actual skills of people regardless of genre. I've seen highly skilled people not get jobs just because "we needed a woman to reach the quota", despite the fact that their replacement wasn't as good as them. F***ing incredible.

Women should learn to code in assembly language, experiment in the electronics lab, do the math, study physics, etcetera too, not just men. What are Jade Raymond's merits in the game development community anyway? Because Assassin's creed was overhyped garbage. I can't believe how well that sold when compared to way better games.

I know women who are programming engineers. One of them happened to worked on Assassin's Creed and other Ubisoft Montreal titles.

Jade Raymond was formerly a programmer, but moved on to producing roles.

Nah, you probably is just envy that a woman make the work you want to do. Don't give me this "they choose the woman" thing, this is crap, and totaly 60's... Really, this is a new century, this excuse to suck in your work got old in the last one.

4.3 - Whatever you say bishop
Yeah, you "Probably" know more about my job than I do. Anyway, can you tell me how is it that better qualified men with more credentials and experience ? I've seen it happen, but hey... you know where in the world I work, so I'm probably wrong, despite the fact that you just assumed I or anyone wanted her job when it's actually the easiest and most boring job (I couldn't care less about the job). My point was, I've seen women still complain about inequality in the workplace when they sometimes get chosen over better qualified people just because we need "diversity".

Have you ever seen a male receptionist? I know I have (not like I care about the job), but most of the time they aren't, and I've seen people be rejected over the silliest things, like not belonging to a certain demographic. If anyone thinks there is no corruption in the marketplace, you'd have to be truly naïve, or a complete moron. Yeah, things have changed, but not in the fact that there is more equality, but that people get chosen to increase diversity in the workforce and not to make it more capable.

Anyway, "bishop", the fact that you think everywhere in the world (or that you assumed I live wherever the hell you live, or work) is just like where you work speaks volumes of your intelligence. Don't get your hopes up though, it speaks negatively about it.

"I know women who are programming engineers. One of them happened to worked on Assassin's Creed and other Ubisoft Montreal titles."

"Jade Raymond was formerly a programmer, but moved on to producing roles. "

Never said that doesn't happen, it just doesn't happen as often as having female co-workers on the easy jobs. To me, tough for them, as they don't get to do the most interesting jobs, but if they really want respect and equality, they should try being as prepared like the few women in the industry. And if there are so few, it's for a reason, which is why some co-workers look at women condescendingly.

The only notable female Video game developer that I can think of or form a picture of is the one that works for Naughty Dog.... I think that she's up in the ranks in the company too, like a Senior Producer or something. I can't think of her name right now, but I know that she's a middle aged woman.

I wonder what kind of game an all Female game developing studio could come up with..... probably a good RPG game or something, who knows.

Maybe if there was more female game developers, it would help turn more ordinary girls into hardcore gamers, and girls wouldn't be questioning why the heck guys like video games so much and of course, more Women game developers would inspire more girls to have a career in game development.

Game development = education wasted.

Its an established fact that the gaming industry is probably the worst tech field to work in. The hours are long, the pressure is intense, the job security is virtually zero and to top it off the pay totally sucks.

I wouldn't even recommend this field to people I hate nevermind, my own daughter or sister.

Why should that deter me from pursuing a career in the video game industry? Company selection is a major factor when it comes to hours, pay, environment, etc.

A lot of us have the passion of putting our hearts and souls into the development process for these titles because we enjoy creating games for consumers.

As I said above, if they want our respect, they should do the tough jobs too. There are a few respectable women out there, but very few. Few women working on the industry and even fewer do the "man" jobs.
