Perfect 10s: MGS4 vs. GTA4

This is something that has really been on my mind lately. Back in April, IGN gave GTA4 a perfect ten. Along with many other game sites it got a perfect ten. Then GameRankings, it took Zelda's spot as number one. After April 29th, many gamers clearly stated that this game does not deserve a ten.
I been a GTA fan all my life, and to say maybe this isn’t the best game or GTA, but it certainly lived up to its hype. People complained that many stuff were taking out (weapons, cars, checkpoints) but you have to realize, when you add in new things you have to take the old things out. Look at Vista.
On June 13th, IGN gave MGS4 a perfect ten. There is one thing I have to say. Yes graphics are beyond greatness. Yes, the story is beyond epic, but what about the game play? About 85%of your time, you are watching cut scenes. A game is meant to be played not watch. I don’t know if you read my review, but I labeled MGS4 as a "interactive blu-ray disc."
What I am trying to say is, how can you say that GTA4 does not deserve a ten, but MGS4 should go higher than a ten? Everyone is saying something, but not backing it up. So can someone just clear this up for me? I would really like to know. Thanks.

Well one thing a little exaggeration on the 85% cutscene. But I'D say its 50/50 or 60/40 in favor of gameplay. I just believe if you fly thru the action parts then I can see where you get this impression. But on topic I liked both games a lot I would probably give the edge to MGS4 because after 20 hours plus of playing I am still interested in going back and playing. Where as GTA4 I'm pretty much done with it.
I can't really explain why people feel this way. Maybe its because MGS4 is PS3 exclusive, but I got to the point where playing GTA4 was kind of like been there done that. MAybe its because I've played all previous games so much, and MGS4 I haven't played since the first MGS. But like I said both are fun I love them both just had a little more fun with MGS4.

2 - Interactive blu-ray disc?
Not the game I played. MGS4 is a game you can play multiple times in many different ways. Stealth or action may be used to great effect. Personally, it was fun mixing up the action w/ stealth and visa versa. The type of gun you use, the customization of that gun, your octocamo, and management of ammo/items is particularly rewarding. Also, if you rush through the game, you are bound to miss easter eggs, hidden guns and weapon attachments. Want to have fun with the guards? Plant a mine, get their attention and watch the scene unfold...take a picture or two. This game has infinite replay. Anyone saying the game has more cutscenes than gameplay, rushed through the game, and didn't enjoy it as much as they could have.

Exactly. 8 hours of cutscenes would mean the gameplay only takes 1 hour, and 20 minutes. What a bogus claim.

When in all reality it's 8 hours of the most intense cutscenes in history, which YOU CAN SKIP if you don't have an attention span because you were byproduct of a failed parental unit/school system. Coupled with the very finest story in gaming history, and around 15 hours of some of the deepest gameplay, which you'll want to play again due to all the possibilities, and the addiction of a decent online feature. Now I'm no math major, but how 8 is 85% of 15 is anybodies guess.

5 - What load of trash!
You clearly havn't played MGS4, and no GTA hasn't lived up to the hype. Good game but no where near as good as Zelda was at it time.

for all those who say 85% is too much than i would say 65%...maybe i was taking it a bit too far, but you have to admit that there without a doubt more cutscenes than gameplay, and no way did i say this game was awful...and no i did nto rush this game, actually i took my time because since this was my first mgs game i wanted to see what was all the fuss about...but this is all my opinion itjust did not appeal to me, and i think that GTA4 is worthmore playing...flame me all you want, but suppport your decision

Now you're saying you beat the game with only around 3, and a half hours of gameplay? More BS.

8hrs of cut scenes total. Unless you finished the game in under 16hrs on your first play thru then NO. There aren't more cut scenes than gameplay.

As for MGS4, it went beyond my expectation and my expectations were high. GTA4 was slightly below my expectation and my expectations were low. I have never been a fan of GTA games so i didn't expect to like it that much but when i saw 10 after 10 after 10, i raised those expectations only for the game to meet the expectations i initially set. Its a cool free roam game but i have outgrown running away from cops and running over pedestrians. All the GTA's offered that and it was the most fun part of the game. Not to mention the tech issues with the game. GTA4 is a game i pretty much forced myself to finish. But that is just my opinion as a not GTA fan from the start

Herc you just keep throwing meaningless, made-up percentages around. How is that backing up your opinion? I could opine that 92.5% of people disagree with you and I would be doing the same thing. If you want to compare, try it like this: Story vs Story, Gameplay vs Gameplay, Graphics vs Graphics, Sound vs Sound, etc. I rate MGS4 higher than GTA4 in all those categories, plus one additional. GTA4 starts out strong, and fizzles out into been there, done that, where as MGS4 builds into a crescendo. It's like when you see a movie and all the best parts were shown in the trailer. What's left? Also, I don't consider cut-scenes gameplay, but interludes that tie the gameplay together, and actually allow your pulse to return to normal after some intense gameplay. Anyway, if you take my advice on comparisons, I'm sure 88.73643% of people would respond more favorably.

GTA has no variety in the missions nor was it fun the first time, the gameplay is horrible, and the story is about stupid wanna be gangster crap. I had no desire to beat the game, and was sorry I purchased it so I'd say it wasn't worth a darn.

7 - What?
Are you new to the Metal Gear series or something? Metal Gear is famous for its extensive and gripping narratives. The gameplay is great but I'll be perfectly honest I fly through the action sequences just so I can get to the next cutscene for more of the plot. Who cares about the gunplay? And I'm really sick and tired of people saying "Oh the AI is ignorant and there is no pop-out-and-shoot mechanic!" Ok for one there is such a menchanic and I'm kinda mad they put it in because I'm a true to form kinda guy, and two with the AI thing the same reasoning holds true. This is a Metal Gear game! And no it isn't the best one. Metal Gear Solid 2 is the best in my eyes.

Oh and to add about GTA4...I haven't accomplished half of that game yet to this day. I burned through MGS4 in 3 days. Which do you think I found more interesting? The one I couldn't leave alone or the one I barely play?

finally someone to attempt to clear something up, but i will go on what you said

story: of course story wise mgs4, why? because it is the ending of a long epic tale...gta4 was also good, it had many plot twists and made you go why did he do that? sure it had pointless ideas, but still it was a great story

gameplay: imho, i dont think either game had great game play, yea with snake you get use your OctoCamo suit blend in, have a robot with you, and use night vision, but there are some flaws, drebin made it too easy to obtain guns, snake had slow reloading times, snake couldnt climb over anything that was taller than his knee, and he couldnt sprint (maybe because of his age, idk)....on the other hand gta4 had a cover system, which worked fluidity throughout the game, use of a cell phone, and for the first time, free aiming, and just like before, it had its flaws, driving (of course), small count of weapons, terrible AI, and many others

graphics: of course MGS4 has this hands down, kojima worked on this for too long not to get good in this section, on the other hand, gta4 was also (but not as good as mgs4) a work of beauty, the only thing that i can complain about is the damn character models, the look like mgs3, and that was on the ps2! i believe if R* worked on the models a little longer, it could have been truly a beautiful game

sounds: you have to admit, both games had the sound down packed, cross with a CAPITAL T, in mgs4, you could have snake grunting when he crawled too long, everybody's voice was unique, and the music was just right (i wish we can use our ps3 music for the ipod), in gta4 the guns, the cars, the police, the scripting, everything was perfect, and whats gta without the radio? like i said both games dominated this section

EDIT: i know you cant compare these two games, its like comparing barbies to halo (well i dont now), but the fact is, how can you get mad for a game getting a 10, but then when another game gives out a 10, its like its the greatest thing ever...can someone justify this? im pretty sure those reviews werent rigged, especially ign, but i did notice that they got the first review, and mgs4 was reviewed AFTER it was release, was this because of the kojima restrictions? i dont know i am just a curious guy who wants to know the bottom line

like i said before, i am still leaning towards GTA, maybe because this was my mgs and i should play at least 2 or 3 times, i hope this clears up why i made up this blog..and i thank everyone for the criticism, i love that

Sorry to dissappoint the legions of Sony fanboys here but i agree. GTA4 is miles better than MGS4, simply because i can pass the pad to a mate, my brother or even my GF and they could all have a little bit of fun causing mischeif. This can not be said for MGS4 where you have to watch the extensive cut scenes to really appreciate it and have fun with it.

Its each to his own thought isnt it. the only games i would ever give 10/10 to is HL2, GTA:san andreas and Gears of War, but that's a matter of opinion.

basically, i dont care if GTA4 or MGS4 got 10/10, they arent 10/10 games for me, but GTA is better, in my opinion (how many times do i need to write that so i dont get flamed)
