Spiegel Online Interview: Hideo Kojima talks about pacifism, movies and GTA

via Kotaku:

"Reader maxax caught an interview with Hideo Kojima in Spiegel Online, the website for German-language Der Speigel, one of Europe's leading mainstream news magazines. Maxax translated it to English on his blog and so we offer up to you here, too.

Kojima explains his brand of antiwar sentiment, which is more or less circumspect about the reasons and results of war rather than outright pacifism. He also pines for a future where smaller, art-house productions are comparatively viable, among a world of titles that are increasingly developed for blockbuster effect, like Grand Theft Auto IV and MGS4.

Kojima said that action, sex and gambling are the genres "immediately understood all over the world," and expands on that in a thought-provoking way."

This man so diverse in his thinking. He is truly an incredible mind, not only of games but politics and world behavior all together. Whatever this guy does will always be met with attention.

again there is no need to compare or even mention both in the same breath . We only do so because itagaki in his delusion of grandeur believe he is alike the greatest people of the industry .

Kojima basically created at least one gaming genre , and kept improving it along with storytelling techniques .
itakagi is at best a pin up , or in a less demeaning way , like any sexy and currently popular holywood actress , that isnt oscar or award worthy . Someone that did and do good works , but will never really have a profound impact on the gaming world , not one like Kojima.
His two games series got their public and might be good , but arent ground breaking and wont resist the test of time .

I know i'll replay Metal gear 1 and metal gear solid 1 in 15 years ... while i know that i wont be touching itagaki's ninja gaiden and even less his DOA .

Hideo Kojima deserves the recognition and respect he gets from the industry and gaming community. There is no other creator close his level or caliber that portrays such story telling, humor and innovation.

I agree about Myamoto and Kojima , but i'd add , as a personal choice and since i'm foremost a rpg fan , Hirunobu Sakaguchi and Yuji Horii .
Yuji was the first , but both fathered the jrpg genre we've grown to love or hate .

While i'm at odds with the recents and current works of Sakaguchi , he deserves recognition and respect . So does Horii not only for creating the most successful jrpg franchise in japan , but also for keeping it's traditional flair and style , while constantly evolving it and sometimes innovating .

Virtually no one except hardcore fans of the genre know him but i'd also add Yasumi Matsuno .

While not the father of the tactical rpg genre , he brought it to the next level , and like all other names of this post , made huge contribution to storytelling techniques . he brought us those incredibly epic tales of political warfare with big twists , and showed us that you can do jrpg stories without the cliché romances .

Without these people and their western counterparts (Like Garriot for Ultima) , i feel that most concept were mostly based around "arcade fun" without much if any try at storytelling .

To each their own , but i didnt care much for game while it was pure arcade a la pacman . I started to care when graphics and art direction and storytelling were brought into the mix .

7 - Its a shame that...
...the MGS4 game is almost tarnished by the inclusion of MGO. If MGO had been released as a stand alone offering under a different name that did not connect it to the MGS universe then I dare say it would receive luke warm reviews at best.

9 - Art house games
Can't be done on the console. Not these days when development costs are sky high and the fanboys/console war are at its peak. Now a days the publishers and investors want hits and system sellers.

They are however being done on a consistant basis on the PC where niche markets exist and thrive through digital distributions. Sins of the Solar Empire, Sam and Max and Combat Mission are great examples of "art house" or niche market games.

Well, I reckon games like Shadow of the Colossus and Okami are walking down that path and both were outstanding.
