Wal-Mart's $100 Gift Card Boosts PS3 Sales "selling out of inventory"

TVpredictions.com writes: (June 10, 2008)

Wal-Mart's $100 gift card offer is driving more sales of the Sony PlayStation 3, which has a Blu-ray player inside.

That's according to an article by Home Media Magazine.

From June 8 to June 14, Wal-Mart is offering the $100 gift card with the purchase of any Blu-ray player. (The gift card can be redeemed for any item in the store.) However, Home Media reports that retailers say consumers are going for the $399 PS3 and ignoring the cheaper $298 standalone Magnavox Blu-ray player.

Retailers and analysts say consumers believe that the PS3 is the best Blu-ray player on the market because it can be updated for future 'Profile 2.0' interactive features while the Magnavox (and many other Blu-ray models) can not.

"I'll bet a lot of people at the stores, and those that read up on their purchases, know this," analyst Rob Enderle told Home Media.

The publication contacted several Wal-Mart stores in Southern California and found them selling out its inventory of the PS3 while the $298 Magnavox gathered dust on shelves.

Looks like June will be a good month for the PS3.

Edit:
OMG I finally agree with Patcher and what he said at the end.

2 - Gift card
My friend bought one of these on wednesday and iwas with him, he was told that the gift card could only be used to purchase blu ray ONLY. they made sure to stress that to him. But the giftcard he was given appears to be a plain standar walmart gift card with no details about what can and cannot be purchased, i told him to wait till the deal was over and then try to buy something other than bluray and see what happens.

he also grabbed cod4 used from gameslut er gamestop and it looks tits on his 42inch hdtv

4 - WalMart Employees
I've had 3 WalMart employees at 2 different locations tell me the 80GB/MGS4 Bundle is already deleted from their system (a day after release) and they won't be getting any more. They go on to say the 80GB is getting replaced by a 120GB. Anyone have any insight on this?

No one's buying a PS3 because it's a Blu-ray player, let alone the best Blu-ray player. They're buying it because the $100 gift card makes the 40GB SKU $299.

I wanted to buy my PS3 at Wal-Mart today to get some "bonus cash", but that 40GB SKU is a useless paperweight without BC. Now, I must go unbundle the 80GB MSG4 SKU that just followed me home from Best Buy.

8.1 - Price Matched?
I hope you had Best-Buy price match to get a $100 gift card from them.

They announced they would match Wal*Mart's deal last week.

If you didn't, go back, they will retroactively price match within 30 days of purchase.

It is too good of a deal . . . I believe they are clearing out these models before higher capacity models are introduced at E3, these may even be starting at 299.

My local Best Buy excludes PS3 as a Blu-ray player, although they were more than willing to match the Wal-Mart offer provided I chose something without a Sixaxis. C'est la vie, it's only $100.

8.3 - Best Buy . . . It's Official
Your local Best Buy really doesn't have a choice.

It was an official announcement of the corporate offices, unless that was reported here incorrectly.

I'd contact the regional or district manager. A store manager may not want to give you a $100 gift card, so discouraged you from getting it. I've found Best Buys customer service to be, at best, very variable including interpreting the requirements of an offer. You may just have gotten the wrong representative.

Don't let that stop you!
That's a game & a movie, plus extra left over for your very own McCrappy Meal!

Revisited my local Best Buy to try again, this time at least they acknowledged the PS3 as a Blu-ray player so we're making progress. BUT they still refused to price match because "it's not the same model" which leaves me perplexed as to which model "You'll get a $100 Wal-Mart Gift Card when you buy any Blu-ray player" actually refers to. I wish they would've stuck to the "PS3 isn't a Blu-ray player" stance because now they've just gone & p*ssed me right off.

9 - Taking bets
I have a sneaking suspicion that sony will bundle Little Big Planet with PS3s when the game finally gets released, seriously that would be one of the best ways to market a brand new game.

Also I think if Sony knocked the 120GB down to between $399 or $350 it would fly off shelves, Sonys come along way since Launch, all they need to do now is keep it up and keep those games coming.

I wouldn't say it's exactly flying off shelves. I'm a single, live in the Midwest & bring home 86K/year & even I circled around the MGS4 bundle for a couple of days before I rushed off to Best Buy to pick mine up. I thought I would eventually get a 360 to compliment my Wii, but:

PS1 & PS2 libraries + BioShock coming to PS3 + MGS4 bundle hype = PS3 sold to me.

Note: I still don't give a rat's a** about Blu-ray as a movie format so Sony's got an uphill battle ahead of them on that front.

10 - I am aware of that Jumper
I only said that because a price cut would easily keep this insane momentum up.

Alot of people have been waiting for MGS4 to hit the ps3 before they made the jump, and now that this masterpiece is finally in our hands and it was worth every penny I paid for my 60G.
