Has Next Gen Peaked?

Gameplayer writes:

Post MGS and GTA what do we have to look forward to?

What did I have to look forward to now? Resident Evil 5? That's miles away. Gears of War 2? Yeah… I guess. Resistance 2? Wasn't that big a fan of the first. LittleBigPlanet? Well, Sackboy is no Solid Snake…

Sadly, it seemed – after playing both MGS and GTA – everything else seemed to pale in comparison.

And it got me to thinking – has next gen peaked? Is there anything on the horizon as potentially as excited as the games we've been playing recently? If you had asked me 2 years ago which games I was most looking forward to playing this gen I would have rattled off MGS4, GTAIV, and Halo 3 without thinking twice. Now that I've completed all three, I'm finding it hard to get excited about anything else. Sure there'll be other games, but will anything else come close to the high watermark reached by those two masterpieces?

The answer to that question is almost definitely yes. A console's true potential is typically shown later in it's life cycle, but it's almost endemic of this generation's lack of barnstorming new IP's that I'm personally finding it hard to get animated over new titles I haven't played yet. As far as I'm concerned, the best games of this generation have been sequels and this makes it hard for me to get excited about any games that don't have a ginormous number after the title.

I mean let's be honest – was Resistance better than Call of Duty 4? Was Saints Row better than GTA IV? Will Assassin's Creed top Metal Gear Solid 4. Unlikely.

Which makes it all the more difficult to get overly excited about games like Mirror's Edge, LittleBigPlanet, or Alan Wake. I mean they could be top AAA titles, but will they outplay Solid Snake?

Here's hoping – but I wouldn't bet on it...

What a stupid article, it really depends on what kind of games you like. Maybe for this guy, "sackboy is no solid snake"....what, you was expecting him to fight metal gear then? For me personally, i've just been playing Warhawk and bouts of Burnout Paradise currently, and then when MGS4 releases thats what i know i'll be stuck on, then MGO, then when LittleBigPlanet comes out i'll probably be sleeping upside down like a bat (thats if i sleep) and then i want to try Resistance 2 with its awesome online and definately wanna try Killzone 2. Maybe Motorstorm 2. Then i'll be ready for Gran Turismo 5 and through all that still be playing LittleBigPlanet aswell. Then FFXIII comes out and my skin will probably fry in sunlight. And then back with LittleBigPlanet. And im still really hoping for an FFVII remake, i know it will come. Thats what im looking forward so to say next-gen has peaked is ludicrous. Well,...for the ps3 anyway. Its gonna get expensive for me

Analysts have determined that the gaming industry actually crashed in the early 90's!

Any so called 'games' you have played since then have been complete and utter fabrication!

Your favorite sequel coming to the newest generation console is allways nice, however he seems to overlook the fact that every generation has brought great new game series that no one expected. This generation is only 2 years +- old, we havnt seen the best yet.

5 - There is one game...
This time of the year is always pretty tricky when it comes to know what to expect. Most of the games presented in Game Shows are already confirmed and we can even tell when they're being released on the market: Re5, Killzone 2, Little Big Planet, Mirror's Edge or even FFXIII. Those aren't necessarily great titles, just popular releases.

I think that the game I'm expecting the most - and keeps me connected to the videogame world of today - is the next game design by Fumito Ueda at Sony.

i don't agree with what he is saying per say, but i do kind of feel the same.

I know its not peaked, but i look at the games out and it feels like they have, i look at the games coming and i am to be honest i have more hope that some of the ps3 games may prove me wrong, but the fact is i have been disappointed with a lot of the games so far.

i am really, really hoping that MGS4 is the game to really push everything up to a higher level on all fronts.

the problem is like, every game has used the power so far to push one thing, and then failed to deliver on the other aspects of the game.

i want a game that pushes everything in an alround sort of way, AI, graphics, sound, gameplay, content....everything.

its kind of hard to explain, but as people pointed out we are only in the 2nd year. my brother says its because i am getting old, maybe, maybe.

Think metal gear solid didnt come out till late into the playstations life.Look how that panned out. There will be others and we will prolly see hints at e3.I mean we are only in the 2 year and sony has stated that they hope the ps3 could go for a 10 year life cycle.

To be honest it just really started for me with MGS4. I mean there have been some pretty good games this gen, but nothing to me that couldn't have or hasn't been done last gen aside from the requisite graphical upgrade (aside from probably Burnout Paradise).

So after I come from my Metal Gear Coma next week, my most anticipated releases will shoot back to Heavy Rain and Brutal Legend. That's not to say I'm not looking forward to a lot more games than that, but those two will stand out among the rest for me. There's also no telling what's going to be unveiled next month, so this gen has far from peaked.

On another note, I'm still a tad perplexed with reviewers doting over GTA4 being the pinnacle of open world games. It's a good game yes, but San Andreas, Vice City, and Bully were far superior games to me, or overall really. The fact that so many systems and gameplay elements from those 3 games (although the last being from Rockstar Vancouver) were cut was even more disheartening when I went back to replay SA and Bully after completing GTA4.

The stories were also more intriguing, with some pretty big twists that mostly caught you off guard. Niko was an excellent protagonist, but GTA4 was mostly predictable and there were a few parts where I was expecting more and the story didn't go where it should have.

So Rockstar North still has another game or two to deliver this gen to build up on the formula brought in by GTA4, I hope they take some of the realism out for the over the top action the series used to be known for.

People that say next gen has peaked is just plain clueless. Their are alot of idiots that claim the 360 has already peaked. All you have to do is look at the original xbox and see that statement is far from accurate. Doom 3 and Chronicles of Riddick both came out near the end of the Xbox's life cycle and both showed huge improvements over previous games.

9.1 - dont be silly firstknight
it's only sony consoles that improve with age. only sony consoles improve as devs learn new ways to make them sing...every other console, especially the 360, is maxed within the first 18 months. whilst sony consoles can get better and better with age. just like a chateau neuf....didn't you know??????????????????

things will get better for both consoles. but, it is upto the developer or in-house studio to creat the amazing game engines needed. at the moment, the pretties and probably most advanced graphical engine is killzones! sony have invested a fortune in the studio to craft such a masterpiece....the question is, will microsoft follow suit and get one of it's own studios to do the same? or will a third party dev try their luck? only the far-cry engines is coming near killzones at present.

with the expense involved in such work, i dont think many third party publishers will push their engines just yet, especially with nintendo eating the market. i think it's only gonna be the platform holders that try to push the hardware.

just at the mo, only sony look like they are commited to doing it...

10 - I rather be surprised
I find it way more rewarding when i pick up a game that i heard nothing about and it turns out to be super awesome. We cant keep piling all these sequels up forever, new ip´s must be made. Some of them will suck and some will be mind blowing.

Sadly these games won't be common place, simply because making games like these cost a hell lot of money. But with a growing ps3 and xb 360 install base it seems obvious that bigger maybe better games are in the pipeline for the comming years.

p.s. Bioshock as should also be mentioned as it is a next gen game with high rankings, though not so huge as GTA IV and MGS4.

In terms of RPG and race games there haven't been any games that can match up to GTA IV or metal gear, esspecially in the RPG genre

It’s still early for a peak, I’m sure GTA 5 and Kojima’s next project will kick more ass, I mean the same thing happened last gen, when MGS2 and GTA 3 came out people were wondering what more can be done and then we’ve seen GTA: SA, MGS 3 and Shadow of the Colossus and they were better in every way.

What game’s I’m looking forward to that might be in the league of GTA and MGS? I guess God of War and the new game from Team ICO.

No, the fanboyism, is in the article.

I do think the 360 has reached it's pinnacle. That's my opinion.

But to say he doesn't want to play rfom2 etc or lbp because of the greatness of other games is retarded to say the least.

LPB alone with the right marketing,i.e tv slots, has the ability to be one of the biggest titles of all time, because of the playability,Nintendo wanted it, ffs. That tells you something. 4 ppl playing at once, numerous maps, build your own maps with your own personality's. Most ppl love that stuff.

Resistance fall of man, equally a great game in it's own right, loved by many, numerous weapons, action all the game. and a first gen game. wait for the second one, it's pretty slick:)

Was presented with this sort of journalism, where would be today? I for one have faith enough that this gen is still in its infancy and has a long way to go. I cannot see why anybody would rather write about the doom and gloom and not about the great games coming out and those that have already been released.

If you have a PS3, you know this is one of the worst articles ever written.

Resistance 2, Little Big Planet, Game by Team Ico, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy XIII VS, God of War III, Gran Turismo 5, Socom, Home, Kingdom Hearts, Killzone 2!!! And thats just what we know about right now!

This generation is just freakin getting started!

As for my 360, and I am going to get called a fanboy for this, I am looking foward to Gear of War 2, but thats about it. I feel like it blew its wad in the first two years. However, that is based on my games preference and the fact that we still have E3 coming up and I expect MS to drop some bombs on us! I have no interest in Fable or Star Ocean. However, that new RPG from TriAce and SE looks very interesting: Infinite Undiscovery was the most exciting title in my point of view.

However, I still have alot to go back and play on my 360. I have yet to touch Viva Pinata, Lost Oddysey, Blue Dragon, or any number of great titles that are now discounted that I never had a chance to play.

I also want to go back and play MGS 1, 2, and 3, before I get my hands on MGS4.

I know that I'm probably a rare case, but I got a next-gen system solely for Battlefield Bad Company.

I know that games like MGS, Halo, GTA and Gran Turismo are great. I don't deny it, and will be buying the ones that come out on my system.

But they are all games I have played before, with updated graphics and updated phsyics, but very little new gameplay. I mean, sure, they have new weapons and radio stations and damage physics and stuff, but there isn't really anything revolutionary. They are just good continuations of good series.

I want something new, and I think that BFBC is taking a small step in the right direction, giving me something new in an FPS. Games like Little Big Planet are doing the same thing for games. XBL and PSN are doing the same thing.

I'm very happy with next gen gaming, and I can't wait for the stuff we can't predict. We ain't seen nothing yet.

22 - Isnt obvious?!?
Theres no point in keeping the xbox 360 relevant anymore!
Next gen just started today With MGS4!
Xbox 360 isnt really next gen, its outdated and has had to rely on Epic for graphics.
Sony on the other hand treats their exclusive very well. They give them the power to be bigger & Better. NEXT-GEN!
Microsoft Just throw money at Developers & tell them to hurry up.
Look At Bunjie. Gears came out first so you expect halo 3 graphics to be better but instead it was a setback & needed a Excuse. How ABOUT ART DIRECTION?
Bunjie was microsoft most important developer but they backed Epic!
Bunjie was overshadowed by Epic and They Left the company after the Halo 3 release... Soon After the Halo 3 release.
So has next gen peaked? No it hasnt! it begins today with the release of MGS4!

Any disagrees are for some people who feel that maybe the xbox 360 has some untapped potential in its construction. Please Mention a Xbox 360 game that does not use the unreal engine and would be pushing the limits in next generation gaming And raising the bar in the future!
Just give me one even if its made up. Ill pretend with you that you are right about it. C'mon what Game for the xbox 360 will be considered The most visually impressive, Biggest game with so much going on at the same time and is so huge that all future games need to take notice and learn from it?

When you look at all the games coming (the known ones) from now to the end of 09' you can see that this gen is right at the threashold of it's peak...

I think from early on 2010' you will see the peak, and even then some games throughout 10' squeek out even more juice...

At about that time we will also be hearing all about the next, next gen systems...

But nope, the peak is smack dab in the getting going phase as of now IMO...

30 - @16.1 Talk about stupid fanboyism...
It isn't unreasonable to think that the 360 is closer to being maxed out. Due to it's similarity in architecture to PC's there is a lot of code that has been optimized, or nearly so, just due to the amount of time people have been able to work with the architecture. Does that mean there's not more muscle to be squeezed out? No! Does that mean it's a weak or bad machine? Absolutely not, and I enjoy mine on a near daily basis.

Sony decided to go in a different direction, with a completely new processor. That's bad in the short term, as we all know developers are having difficulty with it's architecture, which can easily be seen with early multi-platform games. That's also good in the long term, as good developers are just beginning to squeeze power out of the console.

Same was said with the PS2, and some developers, like Oddworld stopped developing for it. Then God of War comes out, and the graphics and gameplay are awesome. You have to be a complete fool to think something different is going to happen this time.

And as I said before, we win. I hope when we are close to the end of the lifecycles of both systems, Sony is kicking Microsoft's butt beyond belief. Then I hope Microsoft comes out with a console that crushes the PS3. After that Sony comes back with a system that is far superior, and so on...that competition can only mean better gaming for us.
