Unreal Tournament 4 release expected alongside Unreal Engine 4.0 completion

VGB writes: [Unreal Engine] Version 4 will exclusively target the next console generation, Microsoft's successor for the Xbox 360 [AKA Xbox 720], Sony's successor for the PlayStation 3 [AKA PlayStation 4] - and if Nintendo ships a machine with similar hardware specs [AKA Wii 2], then that also. PCs will follow after that."

UE 4 is coming in 2010-2012 sometime with Windows 7 in 2010 its likely the third generation of Xbox will be launched somewhere in 2010-2011. Gears 3 is also coming with UT 4 at some point in 2010-2011. Maybe not the first title though. All depends on what the new systems can do.

I think that the Xbox 720 will be out before the PS4, so I wonder how this'll all go down. But anyway, it's too far into the future to predict ANYTHING yet :/

hmmm... well if you look at the current situation the 360 actually handles the Unreal Engine better.

Who ever disagreed, care to share why?

Well, it's about the engine. PS3 can perform better than 360 if the developer go for parallel work between GPU and CPU.

UE3 works very on both PS3 and 360 now. Of course, it *used* to be a bit problematic on the PS3 but Sony and EPIC have worked out the kinks so it's all good now. UE3 was perfected for the PS3 when U3 launched.

wasnt UE3 built mainly for the 360 and pc ?

No, no it wasn't... and it was UT3 that launched not U3, that might come later.

If the engine was perfected then why didn't UT3 support splitscreening on the ps3?

The Unreal Engine is *never* 'perfected' or complete. It's a work in progress, 24/7 which is why Gears2 will be on UE3.5 and why UT2k4 was on UE 2.5.

Ive said this before and it was confirmed by epic, unreal tournament 3 runs better on 360 as its an updated build of the engine, just like ut3 on ps3 was an updated version of the gears of war unreal engine. Same with gow2, it will look better than ut3 on 360. Its not cus they handle better its as they are updated builds.

PS3 may seem all powerful, but its not really. Cell has 1 PPE with 8 SPEs, but only 6 are used for games. Both PS3 and X360 are coded to run games with up to 6 threads working together at the same time just in different ways and its very likely that the next-generation will take another leap into 12-32 or more threads with more complex instructions and multiple cores and possible CPU/GPU hybrids coming along. Its possible that UE4 might work with PS3 and maybe even X360 in some way. It will not be performing at its best on them, but its possible that maybe one or two things might be downgraded though. The embedded HDD and Blu-Ray might make this acceptable for PS3 and for X360 it might need something else, but I don't know. Other engines have had this done before for certain games. Like these games on every platform and seeing the difference graphically from something like Smackdown vs. Raw 2008(I know its crap) or something from PS2 to PS3 with the same game. Either way PS3 and X360 are pretty much the same with power just PS3 is more complex with superior design as far as the coding goes. So the coding can run faster, and do more things at the same time but it takes more practice to get it right. Once it clicks though it can do lots of good things. I haven't seen much of a difference for PS3 vs. X360 games except for PS3 using more colors in most games and a few with some problems that were clearly slapped together ports. Its possible though that the PS3 has some untapped power in there. The new games are showing it off well. Just look at whats coming with Resistance 2 (60 player online FPS play), SOCOM: Confrontation (32 player online and destructible cover and large maps), and KILLZONE 2 (unknown features, but here is what I am hoping for destructible stuff, 32 player online, Amazing graphics.). Most online games on average for consoles are 16-24 players. PS3 is moving them up to 32 apparently. Hopefully Sony will finally show off to us more of what the Cell can do all around with KILLZONE 2 in 2009. 4 years in development the game must be aiming for perfection apparently. Hopefully it doesn't take as long as DNF.

Next-Gen consoles will be sporting at least 1-2 GB as well. So its not likely that the PS3 and X360 will be able to run the UE4 at full potential if they can even do so. PS3 is maybe, X360 is more skecty since it doesn't support embedded HDD or Blu-Ray for its games then its more of a stretch on its power.

I expect the Unreal Engine 4 and all the engines coming in the next 4-5 years in its lifetime will be semi-real to real looking graphics kinda like the new ATI 4000 Tech Demos. I know the ATI 4000 cards might not sport that type of graphics, but maybe they do. Either way those graphics are what I am expecting from Unreal Engine 4 and every other engine after or during its release.

5 - will playstation need a new console to handle unreal engine 4 ??
yes it mos likely will. just remember that the ps3 aint that much more powerful than the 360. both use dual core cpus with 3.2ghz clock speeds and both use 512mb video cards or is the ps3s 256? the only real advantage the ps3 has is the blu ray tech (in other words more space on disc)
this gen the gap between the consoles power aint as big as when xbox vs ps2 days.

LOL OMFG WHY DISAGREE? LOOK IT UP THE PS3 AND 360 ARE ALMOST IDENTICAL POWER WISE!

Yeah, pretty much. Just that the Cell is revolution. And it's 7 cells instead of two as in the 360.

There's one cell in the ps3 with 1 central core and 8 spes (one inactive) with an IBM PowerPC RISC chip in the 360 that holds 3 cores with dualthreading.

Then why we haven't heard a single comment from developers about the X360 still having unexploited power like they comment about the PS3?... even during one of the Major Nelson's podacasts a developer being interviewed said that the X360 has no unexploited power left.

kojima productions said that they pushed the PS3 cell processor to the limit...I say, yes probably, but as we know it today, developers will find ways to code more effectively on the PS3 HW as they get to know it better...on the X360 there's nothing there that can really be improved...that's good as games on the X360 are very likely to deliver a certain level of quality guaranteed

The PS3, launched a year after the X360, and despite of that it has already delivered games that look as good as anything on the X360
(Uncharted and Ratchet&Clank:TOD)

Can't wait to see RFOM 2, Motostorm 2 and other games like God of War 3...after those games, the X360 won't catch up...

Look at their exclusives, those developed specifically for the X360 so you expect them to look amazing: Blue Dragon, looked great but had slow downs which was really annoying, cut-scenes felt like a bad edited movie...Mass Effect? looked great but had technical issues, screen tearing and well, it wasn't exclusive as it was also available on the PC...just like Gears...Gears is the best you can get from the X360

Look at Ninja Gaiden 2... not a technical achievement if you ask me...

If MSFT launches a X720 earler than 2012, they will be in trouble, PS3 will be on the top of its life-cycle, games looking great, all franchises 8and nw ones) out, with a solid install base, with an appealing price point that I doubt Microsfot can improve for their new machine, well only if they are to release something with better specfs than the PS3 unless they repeat the same mistake and people get a bunch of RRoD "to go" (cheap HW)

so i your mind devs can get more from the ps3 the longer they have with it, but not the 360??? oh dear.

the podcast on majornelson was about about an xbox-live arcade game..lol you fail miserably!

the ps3 wont be on no crest by 2012. with an already out-of-date(and inferior to the 360s) graphics card, and a measerley 512mb of ram, the ps3 specs are gonna be looking pretty damn poor by then.

the reason why games on the ps3 which launched a year after the 360 look great is because the specs and dev kits have been in the hands of in-house devs since 05. the delay was for blu-ray, not to finalise the specs of the console....some of you fanboys know nothing, yet spout off garbage like you have phd's!!

stop reading sony propaganda.

5.5 - Some goos stuff here.
Good point dan-boy just because it's new does not mean it's the best. Just because it's different does not mean it's the best. The chips have been tested with games and One of IBM's own architects for the chip said that it was best used for FPU type stuff like volumetric clouds and particle systems running off the CPU. Ars-technica had a write up about it. The Cell will not see more than 50% of it's power when it comes to games. FPU processing is nothing with out correctly utilizing it's power. I mean why would you trust sony after they lied about the emotion engine being more powerful than the GC and the xbox? Then when the PS3 comes out every one admits this is not true LOL. It seems a lot of you guys are new to gaming then if you do not remember this.

I'll just say that neither of these cpus are really geared for really high end gaming and upscaling will be the norm from now own. You where not suppose to find out about that. Then you have the dead heat that is the graphics chips since they are from the same gen with tweaks. It's a dead heat guys the colors all come down to how nivida and amd/ati wanted to implement their color precision and what they though was passable.

As time goes on coding and optimization of how to render to direct x or open GL tech will get better by way of the GPU not the cpu. Rarely does a cpu upgrade do a whole lot to the render and the PS3's set up does really make it easy to send data to the rsx from the cell with out a huge hit. Basically if it's doable on the PS3 then it is doable on the PS3 this much has already been proven and makes total sense.

One one thing good about this is UT3 ran better on my old boxes that ran ut2004 because of all the tight coding. The engine in it's current state is one of the best i've seen with even the killzone shaders being possible. Try putting gradients to the orientation of traced light map meaning make splines part of your rendering package and use alphas with your fake spectrum. hell this is in most VFX software used in commercial graphics in real time.

do we really need more UT games? NO. and please make a game that doesn't look like all your other games. do something with a diff. visual style. (read: not similar to gears or UT. they look good but would be nice to see them do a diff. visual style)

Wont be around the next engine. UT3 is a PC game first if they making an engine just for consoles then UT3 probably isnt the game they will debut first. Probably Gears 3 will be multi platform and maybe a new ip.

18 - I wonder I wonder...
Every one know Epic is really cool with N vidia right now. What is going to make a difference is what n vidia does. They are going head on with intel to prove that a cpu can never do what a GPU does. They did this even with the CELL because if you remember the cell was going to have one for graphics and one for code. Great ideas yet SONY did not have the tech. Intel just bought up the off set project also and they are trying to may a raytraced engine that runs on a cpu so you don't need a GPU any more and if you do the cpu is supose to have enough power to do both!

Sounds crazy huh? Well if things work out we will get realistic graphics like the ones that nvidia has just demoed with their new chips. The next gen is going to be crazy and HD is just going to be the tip of the ice burg. We are talking about 2-3+ years and these same chips may be a bargin. We already know that ram is silly cheap right now and the current consoles are going to get pushed with limited specs which is a good thing.

I mean potential the UT4 engine will keep changing until 2011 12 ish just to keep up with new developments. If they squeeze it on to the current gen they can test some things and optimize the hell out of it so that games next gen can be unlimited once again. I mean DMC with 12-20 enemies on screen is going to be crazy on the PC this year but imagine what will be possible on the next round of console tech... here is a hint the current gen of console hard ware was based on tech that came around the same times as UT2004, yes they didn't use normal maps but Dooms 3 did hell I don't even think epic games used a normal map generator till the UE3 demo. That was a while after doom3 if you remember.

If you don't understand what I just said above and if your disappointed with some games now just remember this is just the tip of the ice burg. Games are the reason why most PC tech are pushed so hard graphically and other wise.

Ut4 is gonna have to rock because many more engines are on the way.
