6 Films That Should Be Games

A few weeks ago, Yahoo! games scolded the video game industry for its abusive treatment of cinematic masterpieces. How, they wondered, could game makers turn such fantastic films into such digital disasters?

Then it dawned on them: maybe they were choosing the wrong movies! Just because a flick is brilliantly written or superbly acted doesn't mean it has any business being turned into a video game. Other films, however, are screaming for the game conversion, and we're here to lend our voice to the chorus. Game developers, get cracking on:

That would have been awesome but in a sense, original MOHs and CODs are Saving Private Ryan :)

Brothers in Arms games seriously reminds of SPR.

I think most of that list was weak... Sin City should be a game, if done properly with it's own new storyline, cause when games adapted from movies try to copy the same story it usually ends up lame.

"Yahoo! games scolded the video game industry for its abusive treatment of cinematic masterpieces."

Sheesh, after all of the garbage being regurgitated out of Hollywood for the last several years, I don't think they are in such a position to complain. How about all of the copy/paste CG movie cashins that keep getting released all of the time? *cough* Kung Fu Panda *cough*.

While they've slowed down in frequency, it doesn't change the fact that the amount of quality and original films coming from Hollywood has slowed to a trickle. I don't mean all of the high octane, foaming-at-the-mouth CG-filled deathfests that are major action movies these days, although a lot of those should have been ignored.

Me and my wife watched Hook last night and it dawned on me that I can't remember the last time that something so imaginative came out. I could consider Golden Compass as it was pretty decent, but other than the odd gem, I rarely see anything from Hollywood I'd want to brave the theatre crowds for anymore. Just a personal perspective there.

I disagree with your assessment. Partly because most movies that are released today are far better than the old ones that came out of yesteryear. You maybe seeing a lot of "crap" coming out of Hollywood, which it could be, but you forget they're are tons of films released every week. More so than any other year before it. On top of that, just because something doesn't look good to you doesn't mean its the same for everyone else. I loved Horton Hears a Who. I'm sure some of you avoided it because of how it seemed like it was just for kids, but you would be wrong. It's a great movie; for all ages. And from what I hear, Kung Fu Panda looks to be just as enticing.

I don't know where you have been, but amazing movies have been coming out often. This year for instance, we got Cloverfield, The Bank Job, Horton Hears a Who, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Iron Man, Prince Caspian, and Son of Rambow. That's just a short list of the favorites for this year. This excludes your interests. If you like to see quality films, here's your chance. Most people would probably foam at the mouth if they saw this kind of line-up. This is excellent for just the beginning of the year. Then you have The Incredible Hulk, The Dark Knight, Wall-E, Wanted, Bangkok Dangerous to keep your eye on for the rest of the summer. I'm probably skipping quite a few too. If you're saying this is all downhill, you're nuts. I debate whether we'll see another summer this good ever again, and it's not even done.

I thought last year was too good to be true (No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, Juno, Gone Baby Gone, The Assassination of Jesse James, Michael Clayton, Zodiac... the list goes on). It seems, though, that unlike any year before it, 2008 will finally push us past the breaking point. Too many good movies. I predict that by the end of the year, you will see various factions who claim the movie they support should be Best Picture. I predict there to be huge and numerous arguments. After all, the competition for the award is going to be unimaginable.

Here's a sneak peek at all the awesome that will assault your senses: Burn After Reading (A dark comedy by the Coen brothers with an incredible ensemble cast: Brad Pitt, Frances McDormand, George Clooney, Tilda Swinton, and John Malkovich. Two gym employees find a CD filled with CIA secrets; they attempt to bargain with its owner to make some money off it. Even willing to sell the CD to other world powers and criminals who hate the CIA), Defiance (From the director of Blood Diamond, three Polish brothers set out to strike back at the Nazi regime by training soldiers they rescue while hiding out in a forest; based on a true story: Daniel Craig, Liev Schrieber, and Jamie Bell), Revolutionary Road (Sam Mendes returns with the famous couple who put Titanic on the spot: Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. Cinematography by the one and only Roger Deakins.), Doubt (Based off the play, Meryl Streep plays Sister Aloysius who discovers a fellow priest abusing a black student. Also stars Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Ryan), The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett put on a movie to remember. Based on a short story about a couple that grows father apart as time goes by. One grows younger while the other grows older. Oh yeah, David Fincher returns!), The Exchange (Clint Eastwood is at it again but in a period piece that has already won over many critic's hearts. Angelina Jolie is a mother who's child has gone missing. The movie sets out to tackle the trust issue; even in regards to law figures and authorities), Australia (Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman star in Baz Luhrmann's epic. After securing a ranch, Kidman seeks someone to protect it, Hugh Jackman. Together they try to unfoil a plot and witness the Japanese bombing of Darwin, Austrailia), House of Lies (Directed by Ridley Scott, Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe: a former journalist/soldier is hired by the CIA to track down a member from Al-Qaeda in Jordan), and more...

So... those are just the ones off the top of my head. Still think Hollywood is in a drought? Hook is nothing compared to the forces of cinema that will make itself known. Just give it a chance. Many people like to complain about Hollywood, but usually its because they don't know what they are talking about and it is cool to hate what's popular. I just got into cinema myself because I find it more intriguing than it ever was. And filmmakers from Hollywood, and its actors, had more than an influence on that. Try out some of these movies I mentioned and you may take back what you said. ;)

This article sort of gets it actually. The main problem of most movie games is that they take a movie that originally took a lot of settings and or characters and then tries to distill that all into a videogame. Everything ends feeling forced and cobbled together.

The trick is finding a movie that has the same formula as a typical game. Children of Men is the best possible example. It is totally linear, has lots of action, a compelling narrow focus to the character, and very real reason to push from one place to the next. Although the plot-line is different, it is probably the closest thing we will ever get to a Half-life 2 movie. Because it is so like HL2, I think it could make an absolutely amazing and compelling game as well.

I think, likewise, the 28days later series could work quite well a videogame, as well as Kill Bill. Not sure about Master and Commander, epic movies seem to fail as VGs (POTC anyone??). Also, I kind of think the lost memory confused character thing has already happened...FF7, Max Pain...Alan Wake?? (once its finally released) countless others I cant think of as well.

What kind of joke is that article ?
"Nothing against resident evil but we'd like smarter and faster zombies ?" How about actually playing the series , realizing there were always a few fast ennemies , and that RE4 and RE5 actually play that trend of intelligent ennemies running around ?

And the rest of their list is horrible , as they pick theme already overused in games , and done then by dev doing licenses , while they'd go up against original creators by big or crafty developpers ...
Do we believe a kill bill game got real chances of being better done than our suaul actioner games ? Such as no more heroes , ninja gaiden , DMC ? little chances of it , and thats the problem .

There isnt much problems with the choice of licences , but rather the degree of commitment to make it a good game .

While loved , the riddick franchise is hardly a masterpiece of cinema , yet its game is fabolous ... because it not only respected the universe , expanded onto it , and kept being a game , and a great one .

Blade runner was probably the best video game adaptation ever , because westwood was imbuing every breath of their skill into making it the ultimate blade runner experience ...

When devs arent serious , and focusing upon meeting the release date of a movie , its a calamity period . it wont matter if its children of men , kill bill or whatever ...

If shipping with a theatrical release , usually it would go the Iron man game ... a crappy looking videogame reproducing most scenes of the movie , with a few added scenes . it wouldnt be the same if someone sat and decided to make an iron man experience as good as zone of the enders , wich would be fitting ...

Of course some licences are doom to fail , what kind of good game could you do with desperate housewives ? But most of the problem are the publishers and developpers .

For the most part I agree with you. But hey, Iron Man was not that bad a game. I enjoyed the demo... is the game so very bad compared to it that people would so often say it blows?

I can't see it. Now Riddick... that has got to be the best Movie to Game I have ever experienced. Can't wait for the next.

They should get the same people that did Riddick and make a version of Pitch Black!!!

Imagine this, you are assigned a mission to assassinate a American Col who has gone insane in Vietnam. You are assigned a boat and you hand pick your crew. You start at a military camp, and there is a completly explorable river and you go down the river at your own pace finding clues to the whereabouts to Col Kurtz's position. It would be an Adventure/RPG with a few shooter elements implemented. not a bad idea though eh? Not for everyone though just those of us that wants depth.

Here is a short list of movies that I would think would make good video games:

SciFi: Pitch Black (special effects... cool setting, enemy theme awesome, huge potential)

Action: Deathwish (WITH character sculpted after Bronson being a must!!!)

Drama(Crime Drama): No Country for Old Men (watch the movie...nuff said)

Comedy: Mr. Bean's Holiday (come on... Mr. Bean!!!!)

Horror: Halloween (where YOU are the masked killer, having to chop up the town and escape those trying to hunt you down. Getting points for originality in your kills and stealth movement)

Animation/Animatrics: The Dark Crystal (Monsters at every turn, Epic story, children's Classic that adults still appreciate)

Classic: On the Waterfront (Brando... dockers union, running errands for the dock, taking care of his pigeons, and the plot of a murder and cover up. A not so modern day version of Shenmue???)

Made for TV Movie: Roots (the possabilities... might be very difficult with todays current PC world but it has a classic story to be told)

Thousands of titles to choose from... can't make them all I guess?

I've always wondered why some game designers couldn't just wait a few years and come up with a really nice way to layout these movie tie-in games. It frustrates me every time I see another by the numbers game. Seriously, I know you want to capitalize on how fresh the property is right now, but if you took some time and came up with a great gameplay experience that more complemented or advanced the ideas of the movie then you might have something. Honestly, I'm probably being too critical, but it still makes me wonder.

I've always thought about how I would design certain experiences, and more than once those experiences were movie related. If I ever did design, I would probably never work on such projects because of my own ambition, but it's nice to play with some ideas. I don't necessarily agree with this list much, except for maybe Children of Men. I could see some nice innovative approaches to game design with that type of material.

Other movies I think would be pretty fun to tackle would be The Departed, Mr. Brooks, and Babel.

First off, The Departed. This would probably be my favorite to work with. Imagine if at the beginning of the game you could either play as Billy Costigan or Colin. A mole to whichever side you swear your allegiance. Cut off from the rest of the world around you, it is up to you to play the part and sell yourself to the new boss. Every move you make is critical in deciding your future. Little do you know that other mole you turned down is actually being controlled by another player who, just like you, has to make important decisions that can lead to alternate missions and stories that may not even resemble the original film. Soon you'll be playing to stay alive.

Obviously, that was for online play and could be thought of as something similar to Resistance 2's Co-Op campaign. Rather than helping out each other, you are competing. Worse, what happens if the mole your competing against was not the only one controlled by a live human player? What happens if EVERYONE (in the related fields: the gang or investigators unit) was being controlled? Who could you trust? What might they do? How will you go about making them believe you're one of them? Maybe you're not the mole and they are? How do you go about finding the mole when Billy/Colin is no longer it?

I would still think it necessary to have a single player campaign that followed the true story, but would need to be incredibly cinematic yet unique. I could go on about that too, but I find it a bit too much. After all, it's just an idea.

The other ideas I just really thought of seconds ago. Unlike The Departed, I didn't mull these around too much (I'm ashamed to say I actually thought about how a game based on The Departed would play for months). Mr. Brooks came to me as a one-of-a-kind opportunity. Of course, the pitch for the game would be survival horror in nature, but would play out very differently depending on what character you chose (Brooks, Smith, or Atwood). If you've seen the film, you would know what I mean. It should be pitched more as a thriller than anything else, but I don't think their is a genre for those type of games. Still, there can always be a first.

The last idea was for Babel. I haven't seen the movie yet, but from the way the trailer seemed to have been presented it could provide a pretty unique take on a well-known cliche. You are a tourist traveling with your wife. At least, that is what you had hoped you would have been doing. Now, your wife is dying. She has been shot and needs medical attention. While you seek to save your wife, pieces of the incident start coming together as multiple people's lives start to entwine.

I could probably think of more movies with great concepts for video games, but its really just a matter of who the designers are. In the end, it doesn't matter what gets made into a game. It's the ideas that sell it: the unique gameplay experiences. I think I've rambled on too much. Sometimes I should just keep my big mouth shut. :D
