Video Game Review Scores: Pointless or Pertinent?

GameSetWatch writes:

While a game's Metacritic or Gameranking average score has often been used to dictate the size of a development staff's bonuses, EA's decision to use numerical scores as the criterion for has elevated the numbers issue a whole new level of consequence.

Some argue that scores represent different things to different publications, one title's 4/10 being another's 68%. Others question why, when scores rarely tally with a game's commercial success, we should use them to make commercial decisions? Always, the question behind the question is: do review scores actually matter and, if so what do they even mean?

At a glance, review scores seem to be the most harmless of things. While good critics will bemoan having to reduce a 1000-word piece of incisive criticism to a number on a 10 point scale (or, um, 19 point scale if you're GameSpot), to the average consumer they offer a useful shorthand reference point with which to compare different titles and inform buying decisions.

But to fully understand the confusing tangle review scores have landed both reviewers, consumers and the wider industry in, it's important to understand their origins. Review scores are a system imported from those publications that review and rate consumer products like televisions and toasters...

Scores are becoming more and more redundant. What goods a score if you dont trust the person who gave it.

I really appreciated the scoreless PSW review of MGS4 because it left us to decide from the body of text so you just had to read it. It was refreshing and we need more of this in the gaming media.

Review scores are as relevent as they ever were.

Persionally I prefer well written reviews, and in that regard really like reading reviews in EDGE or GAMEStm

5 - Reviews are pertinent... But...
Review scores are not. Sorry, but listing pros and cons is sufficient for anybody and only those looking for the quick fix scroll down to the end of the page for the numerical or letter score. Problem is there are too many people out there that would rather see the number score rather than spend the minute it takes to read the review. Sadly, in some cases the written review is poorly authored and shares no relevance as well but for the most part, the best reviews are those that refrain from grading and just share the pros and cons based on strict criteria rather than emotion.

8 - The review will NEVER be Perfect...........
We are solely responsible for the way we think. The best we can hope for in choosing the right game is to read between the lines......... do LOTS of READING.

The writing is on the wall...... if one is sharp enough and understands what He/She is about.

And, as flawed as the review on anything subjective is....... where would we be without them.

Giving someone else the power to choose your decision for you is beyond silly imo. The review systems are incredibly flawed for many reasons..

How do you give numerical value to written reviews without a score? I cant tell you how many times I have seen metacritic give a score of 75 to a review that gave a letter score of B- .. What conversion system are they using? I have also seen them give lower scores to reviews that seem extremely positive.

Secondly, which reviews do you choose? Besides the usual gamespot,IGN,1up,etc. sites there are hundreds of other well known and not so well known sites that review games. Can you honestly tell me that metacritic and gamerankings covers every single one?

Next, who is really unbiased anymore? Before you tell me, "IGN isnt biased" or "1up gave **insert game here** a nice review" give me actual proof that they aren't biased. A score or a couple of nice reviews doesn't prove anything. Thats like saying that because government officials are supposed to look out for the public's interest that means they always will. Has anyone heard of the saying, "power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely" (sorry if I didn't word it correctly..) Those same journalists who you say have integrity are human as well. They bleed and breathe the same way we all do. They are capable of falling for hype just like us.

My final point is this.. Reviews are just opinions. They are not the ten commandments of gaming people. Quit letting someone else enforce their beliefs on you.. Leave that for religion :P

And before someone else starts talking about AAA games this and game of the year that let me ask you this question.... Do you apply those same standards to everything else in your life.. You refuse to play "average" games (but I bet you own a couple of copies of Madden,Haze,Bullet Witch, etc) yet you eat in sub standard "restaurants" (McDonalds, Wendy's,etc) and watch "average" movies. How was Meet the Spartans? Don't forget Meet the Spartans is now available on DVD unrated this week!! :P

People most definetly take reviews way to seriously. Though a lot of that has to do with people trying to make their console look better than the other. And then its taken out of proportion as well. Like 8/10 being a bad score, which it isn't lol. How low do people stoop?

But yeah i do go by reviews, but its more so because i cant spend the money like i used to so i don't buy a bunch of games. But when i look for reviews i look at the overall opinion of them, but even so I take it with a grain of salt, because reviews aren't always right, or more correctly put, they aren't always inline with what i like.
