Sony: Sub-$100 Blu-ray Drives by Winter

From Blu-ray.com:

Representatives from SonyNEC Optiarc, the optical drive arm of the joint Sony and NEC collaboration, have revealed that they predict prices of Blu-ray combo drives - which can read Blu-ray discs and write DVD and CD - will reach sub-$100 prices by this upcoming holiday season. Additionally, it is expected that similar notebook drives would reach the $150 level by that same time.

They also predict that Blu-ray burners - those drives that can write to Blu-ray discs - will go for between $150-200. These lower prices will make the drives more accessible to computer manufacturers as consumer demand for Blu-ray drives steadily increases. Additionally, those looking to add some Blu to their existing systems will have a less expensive option to do so.

1 - This is good news
for those that have been waiting. I'm sure this will help sales. Then again to enjoy a full picture you will need a laptop with a 1080P screen and the right graphics card. Unless you just wanna use it for storage.

This is huge news... Excellent. Maybe Blu-Ray movies will finally go down a bit in price. I have had to cut back my purchases.

I also hope this translates to more sales over all.

Hopefully the PS3 price goes down even more. Then it will be unstoppable.

4 - They need
Cheaper blue ray prices 30 dollars for a movie is kind of a lot even if its in HD. You want the quality but not always want to pay for it.

Shop Amazon. Most of their Blu-ray movies range from $15-25. I'm not sure if there's any that cost $30 that aren't some sort of special edition. :P

Anything over $20 is still a bit much in my eyes, but that's the nature of early adoption. After another year or two, the cost of the disks will be low enough that all of the movies should be $15-20.

With this news, just imagine if Sony managed to get the 40GB PS3 down to $299.99 at the end of the year, Ha ha! If you've got a 40GB PS3 WITH Blu-ray for $299.99 and you've got a Xbox 360 Premuim possibly reduced to $299.99 as well, the PS3 will be unstoppable. But most likely, the PS3 will always be a little bit more expensive than the Xbox 360, but Blu-ray production costs dropping is good news for the PS3 and the Blu-ray format as a whole.

11 - Not enough
I don't care if the drives cost $70 but as long as new Bluray movies weight in at $30 the rate of adoption will be slow. Sony need to do something about the cost of movies first, once they're down to $20 Bluray will be unstoppable.

i agree, if the movies are gonna stay at 30 its not going to catch on, with the drop of the play they HAVE to drop the price of the movies.

I could care less about Blu-Ray movies right now, but using it to store data from my PC is what it's really meant for. I could backup most of my computer on one Blu-Ray disc. Very nice. It's going to take several years for Blu-Ray to become a mainstream format for movies. Blu-Ray is getting cheaper though. I've seen several Blu-Ray movies for $6.99 - $13.99 on sale at Fry's Electronics. That ain't bad at all. Once DVD's start to phase out is when I'll switch; not before.
