Does Sega need a new console?

Sega has had a loss of a little over $500 million in 2007-2008 and has not had much success.Maybe its time for a Dreamcast 2? But Sega has never been the same every since Sony's release of the Play Station 2 (Japan March 4, 2000 - North America October 26, 2000).

The Sega Dreamcast could not compete with the Ps2. The Ps2 quickly decreased the sales of the Dreamcast not even 2 years after the launch of the Dreamcast. The Ps2 had a DVD player and their game disc were DVD-rom and had much more space. The Dreamcast had online capabilities but they were soon blew away by Microsoft's Xbox that had introduced Xbox LIVE which was a much better experience because it had The Halo franchise and the Tramcar only had Phantasy Star universe.

If Sega were to make a new console some things they would need to look into are...

1.1 - I can afford another console
But I think Sega should work on making good/great games again before they tackle a new console.

Does it really matter about spelling if you still get across the correct information?

4 - They quickly
lose another 500 mil if they made another console probably 5x more than that actually. Sony has already put its sceptor down and been pronounced King of the video game industry.

but no, playstation 2 did it, there is no doubt about it, it shouldn't even bring xbox up for dreamcast defeat...i say there were almost nothing related to xbox for dreamcast's defeat..

Yeah you're probably correct in saying that the XBOX had nothing to do with the death of the Dreamcast.

However it probably contributed to the decision from SEGA not to return to the console market. Surely?

8 - How would they fit into the vicious console war?
The Wii owns casual gaming and the 360 and PS3 are what gamers want. Who's left to want something from Sega?

Between Nintendo going after the casual gamer and PC gaming nose diving we may see PC hardware manufacturer(s) take a crack at consoles. AMD/ATI, Nvidia or Intel teaming up with sega gives instant brand recognition and interest.

They would be plagued by the same thing that killed the Dreamcast. Support, and and fighting against promises.

SEGA doesn't have the money to do this and with the current economic climate who would loan them the money to jump into such a cut throat market - one they have already lost in once. How do these stories get approved? not only is it an extremely poorly written article but the spelling is atrocious.

It was sad to see Sega go, but if they or any other company enter the market right now, they would get crushed by MS, Sony, and Nintendo. I am all for more competition makes it better for the consumer, but four systems would be a mess. It would a waste for Sega to even try and they no that.

I don't see the point. The Dreamcast was an amazing console, but lost out big time.

Between Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft every gamer is catered for. There's barely room for three companies, a fourth may just fragment the market too much.

To me Sega have always been a company who make great arcade games, the emphasis being on games, rather than the hardware that powered those arcade games.

Sega just need to keep concentrate on producing great new IP and updates to it's older IP's games.

Although saying that, I really think a Sega Nintendo team up on the Wii successor could lead to amazing things. Sega obviously have great talent at designing hardware, and the Dreamcast was ahead of it's time.

17 - Not this again...
Like I said before:
-These are the results of the parent company Sega-Sammy;
-Sega only accounts for 25% of Sega Sammy's yearly results;
-Western consumer confidence on Sega has increased largely;

Speculating that Sega will enter back into the hardware market is on par with saying Atari may come out with a new console. Sega is not in a position to jump into such a heated and strong competitive market.

People have been talking about Sega jumping back into the hardware pool since the death of the Dreamcast. Sega did make quality consoles, but with electronics giants (read not just video games) like Microsoft and Sony making incredibly powerful machines and Nintendo's eternal grip in the market, why would Sega even attempt to step in?

Sega just is not big enough to compete with these guys anymore. The article even points it out, saying that Sega reported a loss $500 million plus. Creating another console would just sink them deeper and if the system crashed and burned, the whole company could very well go down with it. Believe me, the powers-that-be in Sega know this and are not going to take that risk.

I also found it funny how the author of the article tells us what would have to be done to make a good console. Good online capabilities, good processor and graphics, a hard drive, latest disc technology, and a good line up of games. Is it just me or can't this be stated for anyone entering the market? Like any company is going to say,"OK, let's make a system with no hard drive and no games at launch, we'll do great! Trust me!". LOL. Talk about pointing out the obvious!

The only thing sega needs to do is stop rush-releasing crapppy games, they pretty much turned into a company that releases quick games hoping for some profit. Instead of 5 crappy sonic games per year, invest some time and make one good one every 2 years.

seeing sega coming back into hardware would be really interesting.. even though alot of people say that sega would get crushed by sony and microsoft no one said anything about the wii... a fourth system would be crazy but sometimes crazy is the way to go.. i know for a fact that sega has the exclusives and does have the capabilities to make another system.. like i said a fourth system could be a good idea it would most likely be sony vs microsoft and nintendo vs sega.. but for right now i agree that they should work on a tittle for about 2-3 years to make a good game to raise some money to make a new system.. seeing sega back will be a great way to start off a new console war or 2014.... its either sega or apple but i hope its sega cuz apple will rip you off

21 - Two words...
...Iron Man. That game is a $60 piece of garbage on the 360/PS3 wrapped in a nougaty coating of old used baby diapers. Then let me follow that up with Viking Battle for Assguard. It was worth the $5-7 I used to rent the game at Blockbuster and play it during the weekend but that about all. It was a decent game but not worth purchasing. I would've been PISSED had I purchased either of these games.

Case and point, they need to focus on their games before they have nothing at all to focus on. This company cannot keep running this way. I loved the SEGA consoles and many of their games but the older games and my affection for the consoles aren't enough for me to even consider buying ANY of their newer titles anymore. I'm starting to wish they'd just go away =( while I still have some fond memories.

22 - I CAN SEE...
...Sega getting back into the console wars, but not this generation. The Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3 have got this gen on LOCK, with nearly every base of gaming covered.

It's been said here and I'll say it again... Sega needs to fix its own house before worrying about a new console. Get three or four million-plus selling game franchises under your feet, THEN get with AMD/ATI or NVidia or Intel like Horny Melon said, find a way to come up with a state of the art machine for $299, bundle a classic Sega game package inside and you might have a chance? Maybe?

Still have great times with my Dreamcast-- it was truly ahead of its time. Who knows... if Sega had quickly upgraded to DVD and gotten a few more exclusives....
